Harry read over his younger sister's letter once more. She was going to return home for Christmas, although she had said the opposite a couple of months ago. Harry was extremly happy that his littlest sister was going to return home, he didn't want to spent the celebration with his crabby sister and her annoying husband. His mother hand invited them over for the Christmas's table and Harry couldn't protest for about her decision. She was his sister, after all, but he didn't enjoy her company lately. He just couldn't stand the way she treated Maisie, their dead brother's wife. The poor girl had lost both her husband and son in that crush.

Holding the letter in his hands, Harry walked in the sitting room where he found his mother. Violet Diggory still had no idea that her daughter was returning home and Harry was sure that she was not going to be interested about that fact anyway. As Mrs Diggory grew older, she became more and more cold and nonchalant towards the people around her. Harry couldn't blame her, she had lost her husband but this was not a reason to be cold to her own children.

" Mother, she's returning." Harry murmured and his mother simply smiled while taking the letter in her hands. She nodded and then she stood from her seat and walked out of the room. Harry couldn't help but raise an eyebrow as he occupied a seat himself. His mother could be so odd sometimes.

Suddenly, Harry heard the sound of a door opening and turned his head towards the direction of the sound. " Mother?" he said but then he saw another familiar face. " Oh, Maisie." he said softly, offering his sister-in-law a smile.

Maisie Diggory was not having a good day. She had gotten another snide letter from her sister in law who hated her but for some reason kept sending her letters. She barely even attempted to hide her snide remarks to Maisie, and she just couldn’t stand it today. She had recently lost her son and husband, a loss she felt deeper than most would. She had loved her husband since her days in Hogwarts, and to lose him so suddenly... well it was hardly bearable. So she walked through the house on her way to the gardens trying her hardest not to let the tears fall passed her blue eyes.

She would not be seen crying at the snide remarks of some cruel woman. It wasn’t proper after all to wear your feelings on your sleeve like such, unless in the company of your husband which she no longer had. She repeated this to herself as she walked into the living room, stopping abruptly when she heard herself being addressed. Looking up with watery eyes she saw Harry, giving her a smile that made her heart jump.

She scolded herself mentally for that. It was unfaithful to her husband to be feeling such when his younger brother smiled at her, but she couldn’t help it. Harry made her feel safe and wanted, and he was quite handsome too. She scolded herself once more for that thought. How could she be thinking such a thing when it was only mere months ago that she lost her husband? She must be a terrible wife, and with that thought the tears fell passed her eyes.

She couldn’t believe she was standing in the living room, noiseless tears sliding down her face as Harry smiled her way. “Oh hello Harry.” She said, sounding distressed. She wiped the tears from under her eyes and gave a forced chuckle. “You’ll have to excuse my state. I just got another letter from your sister…and well, you know how she feels about me.” She said it softly as her voice always was, straightening out imaginary wrinkles on her dress.

“At any rate, I was headed to the gardens. How are you faring today, Harry?” She asked with a smile, genuinely interested in how he’d been. Since the death of her husband and child, he had been her closest confidant, and she cared very deeply for his well being and happiness. Smiling his way, now tear free, she awaited his response.

She was crying. It was clear that she wanted to hide that fact, but Harry was not stupid. Harry couldn't help but feel worried. Maisie had recently lost her son and husband, Harry didn't want to see her sad. He wanted to make her life happier and more comfortable. He was sure that if her brother was still alive, he would appreciate that. Although Harry was never particularly close to his brother, he was sad about his death. He wanted to protect his wife and make sure that his brother was finally happy, whenever he was now.

" Why are you crying?" he asked and then she replied. His sister. Her again. Harry couldn't help the flame of anger which stated burning in his chest. Sometimes he couldn't believe he was related to that cruel woman. Everyone in the family knew that she disliked Ronan's decision to marry Maisie, but she didn't have to make the girl feel pain. Harry knew that his sister was just envious. She had to live with her horrible husband while Maisie had a particularly happy life, despite her husband's death.

" Oh, her." he replied coldly. " Do not open her letters. Give them to me instead." he replied and offered his sister-in-law a smile. Next time she sent Maisie a letter, Harry was going to make sure that she was going to get a lesson.

" I am fine, Maisie. The youngest send me a letter. She'll be here for Christmas." he replied.

She returned the smile Harrison gave her when he said to give him any letters his sister sent her. She was glad to see he was out to protect her – even if in the simplest of ways. And his smile…well it did more to her heart than was proper, that was certain. She felt a pang of guilt again. She loved her husband dearly, and her son. More than life itself. So why was she feeling these things every time Harrison looked her way? She was a foolish girl indeed, she thought, to be feeling so fanciful after only a simple smile thrown her way.

When he informed her that he’d gotten a letter from the youngest Diggory sibling, she smiled widely. “Well that is just wonderful!” Maisie was quite fond of the little one, perhaps having shifted her motherly feelings after the loss of her own son. But she didn’t acknowledge this. She’d always been fond of the youngest one, since she first met her a year and some months before. But Maisie had always liked children.

Maisie tucked an errant strand of hair behind her ear, the rest tied back in a loose bun at the base of her neck. She looked to Harrison and smiled once more. Just looking at him brought her a sense of joy, and she wondered if it was perhaps his resemblance to Ronan that made her feel so. But something told her that wasn’t the case, and so she felt guilt once more. How could she be feeling such things when she had just lost her husband and only child?

“I was just headed to the gardens. Would you like to accompany me? Perhaps we could catch up. I feel like we haven’t spoken in quite some time.” Any measure of time, truth be told, felt like an eternity to her nowadays. Especially when it concerned Harrison. She held her hands clasped in front of her as she awaited a response.

That was not a bad idea, actually. Harry rarely visited the garden, he was always too pre-occupied with his work. Although he was not working for an especially important deparnment of the ministy, he still had work to do. He was one of the best students in Ghouls Studies, that's why he decided to work in that departnment of the ministry. His salary was also a pretty good one. Harry had nothing to complain about.

" Sure." he replied and stood up from his seat, walking slowly towards his sister-in-law and stretching his hand towards her. " It's a lovely day." he commented, although he higly doubted that. It was snowing outside and one could barely see the sun. Harry liked the winter, but he hated snow. From a really young age, he disliked wearing coats and heavy clothes. His clothes were pretty thick and he didn't want to slow Maisie down so he could wear a coat, that's why he opened the door and walked outside along with the woman. " So, Maisie. What do you think of Hogsmeade during Christmas?" he asked rather awkwardly. He was not sure what to ask Maisie about.

Maisie smiled to herself when Harrison agreed to her request for a walk. She liked being in his company, no matter how guilty that fact made her feel, and was happy that he didn’t seem to mind her company in the least. At this point in her life, Harrison was her best – only – friend. She felt completely lost and alone since the death of her husband and son, and Harrison had been there for her to lean on. He had cared for her since their deaths, and that was something she’d be eternally grateful for. She didn’t know what she would do without Harrison.

As they walked outside she gave a slight shiver. It was cooler than she’d anticipated, and she crossed her arms over her chest in attempt to warm herself up. It wasn’t unbearably cold, thanks to her thick long sleeves, but it was in fact a great bit chillier than she had thought it would be, sun shining the way it was. She figured she should have known that sunlight did not necessarily mean warmth, but she had been out of it lately and with good reason. She had after all only recently been widowed.

When he asked how she liked Hogsmeade during the Christmas time, she smiled. “It’s lovely. So snowy.” She noted with a smile as they trudged over the garden path that had been cleared of snow. They had just enough money to hire someone to do such work and he’d done his job perfectly, she noted as she looked at her feet as she walked. She was coming to like Hogsmeade quite a bit. It was different from the village she’d lived in with Ronan, being all magical as it was, but she liked it quite a bit.

“So,” she started, looking up to Harrison and feeling the familiar flutter in her gut. She felt only the slightest guilt this time, getting used to it more and more as it happened, and continued to smile. “how has work been as of late? Well, I trust.” She gave him her most earnest, interested looking smile as she awaited a response.

" Maisie, you'll catch a cold!" Harry pointed out, removing his coat from his back and putting it on Maisie's shoulders. He knew that women were especially sensitive in the winter. They were always wearing those dresses which were deffinetly not suitable for the winter. Although their dresses wee beautiful, they were not especially practical.

" Oh, work?" Harry replied. His job was surely not the most interesting one, but he actually enjoyed it. He was a good student, so he managed to get a good job in the Ministry. His mother always replied that once he grew older, he could get a better job in a shinier department. " Oh, pretty good, actually. I do not have too much work lately." he murmured. Maisie surely didn't care about his boring job.

Maisie blushed slightly at Harrison’s outburst. Indeed, it was quite chilly, so she didn’t make any objections when he removed his coat and laid it over her shoulders. In fact, she pulled it tightly around her and reveled in the fact that it smelt of him. She liked the way he smelled. It was a nice scent, she thought. And that thought made her blush deepen. Thankfully, she could blame it on the cold winter air, the state of her rosy cheeks. She just hoped he didn’t realize what was on her mind, something that made her feel infinitely guilty. She was married to his brother, had a child with him and she loved the two very much even though now they were gone. But these blossoming feeling for Harrison…well, she knew they were wrong but she just couldn’t seem to stop them from coming.

She frowned when he told her so little about his work. She missed feeling a part of someone’s life. She missed Ronan’s tell of his daily work, and hoped that perhaps Harrison would fill that void. She enjoyed listening to the idle chatter of things she didn’t really understand. It was fun for her, it made her feel a part of something. Ever since Ronan and Ronan Jr’s deaths, she didn’t feel very much a part of the Diggory family. What with Harrison’s sister hating her. She just didn’t feel very much at home in the home she shared with the Diggory’s. She was just one by marriage, and now that her husband and son were dead, it was like her connection to the Diggory family died with them. “Oh I’m sure you can think of something more interesting than that to tell me.” She pushed gently, yearning to feel a part of something – anything.

The Spirit Division was not an especially interesting one, so, Harry doubted that Masie would be interested in listening to his daily routine. He surely had not a shiny occupation in an important division, or in the Wizengamod. His mother often wondered why he didn't work there, but, the woman always concidered her sons better than they actually were. Now when Ronan was dead, Harry had to constantly hear his mother whinning about the fact that he worked in the Spirit Division. Harry didn't mind his job. He received a pretty good salary and this was everything he actually had to worry about.

" Well, a week ago we had to deal with the ghost of some old lady which haunted the house of her muggle great-grandaughter." Harrison started, hoping that Masie would find interesting his little story. " Apparently she was the only known wizard in that family and, she was convinced that she was a witch as well. Although she couldn't see the ghost, she could hear doors and windows open. The poor woman had almost gone mad. Luckily, the ghost won't continue anymore and we did several spells on the woman to make her forget." Once he finished talking, Harry looked at Masie, eyes full of hope that she liked his story.

She giggled slightly at his story. “That’s both terrible and terribly amusing!” She said with a laugh. It was terrible that the poor woman was being haunted by a ghost that she couldn’t see, but amusing that the ghost was doing such antics. She knew ghosts were capable of such things, but it was always amusing to hear of them at play. She remembered the ghosts of Hogwarts fondly, particularly Peeves who wreaked havoc. Most found him utterly unbearable, but oftentimes she found him quite amusing. He hardly ever messed with Maisie herself, but perhaps that was why she found him to be amusing as she did. She remembered Helena Ravenclaw, the ghost of her house and how she used to visit her up in the tower. It all brought back such wonderful memories…memories in which her beloved Ronan were still alive.

“Oh that brings back fond memories of Hogwarts. The ghosts there. Remember Peeves?” She grabbed his arm and turned to him with a smile on her face. She couldn’t remember smiling so in quite some time, so it was a pleasant feeling, the tug at the corner of her lips. She enjoyed his little story perhaps more than was necessary, but she couldn’t help it. Harrison always had a way of making her feel better. It was just how it had been since Ronan’s death. Harrison was the one that brought her out of her depressed stupor, and because of that a sort of bond was forged between the two, whether he felt it she couldn’t say for certain, but she certainly did.

“Thank you for the story, Harrison, I quite enjoyed it.” She smiled and laced her arm through his.

It made his hurt to think of Hogwarts. It reminded him of the time when his brother was still alive. Although Harry was used of being an older brother, he couldn't stand being the man of the family. His father, his brother, both dead. Now, he had to take care of his mother, his siblings and oh, Maisie. He didn't even want to think how his lovely sister-in-law felt. Being a widow in a such young age. Besides, his older sister didn't help the situation. Harry was really curious to learn why the woman was so against of such a lovely young girl.

" I remember, once in my third year when he threw eggs on all the boys in the dorm in order to wake us up." Harry remembered with a bright smile on his lips. He had woken up because one egg had hitten his right ear. For the rest of the day he could hear nothing with that ear, so he had to visit the hospital wing where they put some smelly liquid in his ear. " And that day, in my sixth year I believe, when he chased that poor boy, James Tanis." he continued with a chuckle. Poor James had to hide in the girl's bathrooms.

Harrison felt a pain in his heart as Maisie curved her hand around his. What... What was Ronan probably thinking now? Whenever Harrison talked to Maisie, whenever he looked at her, he had a feeling that his brother was ashamed of him. " I'm glad you liked it Maise." He replied quietly, realizing that his eyes were lost in Maisie's for a couple of seconds. He removed them and turned them on a tree instead when, he realized that if it didn't stop snowning soon, he would have to remove the snow twice a day in order to walk freely in it.

" Maisie, I think we should return inside." Harry commented with a small, genuine smile. " It is getting cold and it's snowning and..." Harry quickly tossed one rather stupid excuse. " I have some work to do."

Maisie giggled lightly at his story. She had nothing but fond memories of Hogwarts, and it was good to see that he had them as well. Even if Peeves was a menace, he proved to be rather amusing when it wasn’t you he was tormenting. She found most of his antics positively hilarious most of the time. Even if they were a bit odd and perhaps a tinge cruel. She remembered the way he’d sing in rhymes, and yearned to be a student once more. That would be before all the pain of losing her child and husband. Before the pain of being alone in the world. She shook the thoughts from her head; she wasn’t alone. She had Harrison, something she was eternally grateful for.

When he suggested they go inside, she couldn’t help but feel a bit down. Did he really have work? Or did he just not want to be in her company? The thought of the latter hurt her more than it should. She was certain of that fact. She cared a bit too much on the fact of him wanting to be around her or not. She wanted him to want to be near her as much as she yearned to be near him, something that made her feel as though she were betraying her deceased husband. She felt shame for wanting to be held by Harrison. Perhaps even the same way she was held by Ronan, something that caused a blush to grace her cheeks.

She would no longer think on such things. They were improper surely and Harrison would be most disappointed in her should he know what was going on in her head. She felt like a harlot for thinking such things, but they couldn’t be helped. She liked Harrison. She wanted to be near him at all times. Listen to him talk and talk back to him. It was one of the few things that brought her joy lately and she tried not to feel too bad for that fact. “Okay, Harrison.” She replied, giving him a smile that she hoped conveyed that she wasn’t upset. Which she really was. As they walked back to the home in silence, she wondered if perhaps he felt the same way she did.

Harrison regretted his lie, but a bit more sain and logic part of his brain assured him that his moves were right. He couldn't feel that way about his brother's wife. Even if he was dead, he couldn't think that way about Maisie. It was the bitter truth, but if he tried to court Maisie it would be too scandalous for the society. He couldn't ruin his and Maisie's reputation.

" I believe we will meet again for dinner." Harry commented, as he held Maisie's hands in his for a while and smiled to her and then, once he realized he held her for too long, he walking upstairs, to his room. It was better that way. Harry was taught to hide his feelings trough the time, and right now he had to do excactly that.
