Lemme Riddle you a ditty, it's just a little bitty, little thing on mind
, about a boy and a girl tryin' to take on the world one kiss at a time
Having such a close knit family could sometimes be a burden. Everyone had to know everything, everyone had to have their sides attached to one another as to never miss a thing, there was never a moment of pure privacy. Except when Connie was with Cailean. They were a secret. A good secret to have. And the more she thought about it, the more she decided how her family was completely overreacting. It wasn't as if people knew. They were a secret.

And they were going to stay that way. No matter what happened.

The February wind was bitter and cold, but a long walk around the castle grounds was what she needed. Connie could no longer play quidditch, the pits, the locker rooms, the field - it was all off limits. She couldn't even bring herself to look towards it. It hurt too much. Everything hurt too much.

For the second time that day, Connie thought of the distance that was now between her and her family. Jesse in particular. During their first year here, when for the first time they were separated, they'd wander around the grounds together just to maintain the sibling closeness. Now more than ever, Connie needed her brother to not hate her.

The return to school over a month ago had been a return to normalcy for Jess. Between listening to Connie and Gabe argue and trying to continuously entertain Mercy, Jesse was so ready to head back to Ravenclaw where only Vix and Lester could get at him continuously and thank Merlin neither one of them ever needed him twenty-four/seven. He would have lost his mind if he was in Gryffindor with everybody else.

Still, even with quidditch and school to regulate him, everything was still off in their family. He had no idea what was up with his twin lately, but she was a completely different person and Jesse had no idea what to do about it. He and Gabe had only gotten to speak briefly about their sister and the potential reasons for her changes in behavior. Unfortunately, they didn't really have any clues, so Jesse was left to wonder if he could even trust his sister any more if she was out and about in the middle of the night doing who knows what.

His feet were itching for a walk, so he pulled on his heavy winter clothes and vacated the Ravenclaw common room with the intent to take a lap or two around the edge of the lake. Jess supposed he could have gone for a fly around the pitch too, but he was never sure if any of the other teams were practicing and showing up unannounced just started problems between teams. Ravenclaw hadn't been affected by the ban on female players, but he knew Connie had been pissed about it, and he couldn't blame her. He'd just spoken with Catherine at length about it as well. It wasn't fair, but there wasn't much they could do about it until the Headmaster got his head out of his arse.

Humming an old Celtic tune to himself, he strode through the snow, long legs eating up the snowy ground rather quickly. He hadn't made it far when he noticed a familiar figure a bit ahead of him. Unsure of whether or not he should bother Constance, he figured a civil sibling talk was in order after the chaotic holidays. He mused over calling out in Gaelic, but he was not as prolific with it as she was and she'd be able to talk circles around him. "Connie, wait up." He said instead, picking up his pace to catch her.

It was almost as if the twin telepathy worked. She needed Jesse and what would you know, there came her brother walking out of the wood works. He didn't speak in Gaelic though, probably for the best though. She'd start speaking entirely in it and expect him to understand and reply in the language as well. Sometimes, well most times, Connie hated being bilingual. Why couldn't everyone speak Irish Gaelic? She was so much more comfortable using that language - even with it being her second language.

"Hey Jess," she called back. Connie hoped that Jesse wouldn't question her about what happened. That was a fight, yes a fight because with the Hatchitts there was no other way, she had no desire to pursue. "You need some fresh air too?"

Back home - home being the house that had burned home a few years prior - Connie used to wander through the hills surrounding the manor with her brothers. The high grass would itch her knees from under the dress and she would shed the dress somewhere between the house and the river. Their governess at the time hated a Connie because she was anything but a proper young lady. There was no fun in being a young lady though, sewing, music, dancing - none of it interested her. Connie had to be outside.

"Why aren't you at the pitch? Don't you have a game coming up? Did you hear about the loss? I wanted to kill Leo." What kind of captain didn't show up for a game? Vina would've been there. "And the new seeker? God. What I would do to get my hands on that boy."

Jesse merely shrugged at her inquiry and her impressions on the current Gryffindor quidditch team. In all honesty he hadn't gone to the last game. While he knew he should have, standing out in the cold to watch two teams on which he had no friends or relatives playing, didn't seem like a while lot of fun. It wasn't like it mattered who won to him.

"We had practice yesterday. Went pretty well. Cold though." Or so he'd thought anyway. Quidditch was truly the best distraction he could ever think of. You had to think all of the time, pay attention and there was no room for distractions. Unfortunately, practicing and playing in the winter was just downright cold and their practice hadn't gone for its usual length. The weather was damp and the chill went straight into your bones. He'd though his ears were going to fall off that night after practice. He'd definitely huddled by the fire for a long time that night. Not Jesse's favorite time of year by any means. This was the time of year that he tended to stay, lounging by the fire with a book in hand. It was very relaxing to say the least.

Today was much milder though, hence the walk. Though now he was seeing it was most likely not going to be as relaxing or refreshing as he intended. "How have you been occupying your time without quidditch?" He hoped that sounded as innocent as it could have. He really had no idea what she ever did over in Gryffindor tower. He only saw her at common meal times and in their shared classes, which were very few. Despite being twins, the two were very dissimilar.

They fell in step together, Jesse stuffed his gloved hands in his pockets, looking up at the grey sky ahead of them. While his curiosity was dying to get the better of him, he kept his tongue in check and waited to see how she answered his first question. Being twins, he should have just been able to up and ask her why she was acting the way she was, but honestly, he wasn't in the mood to fight with her today. He was slowly learning that a civil conversation with his sister was getting harder and harder.

A slight, but definite blush spread across Connie's already rosy cheeks at Jesse's question and she quickly began debating possible scenarios in her head. How much could she give away without him getting angry or revealing Cailean's identity? She could be completely honest, but then Jesse's head would probably explode - even with his calm nature. She could lie, but then she'd have to maintain the lie. And how big of a lie would it possibly turn into? Or, she could say the bare basics and sort of tell the truth.

The options fluttered through her head faster than she'd imagine them to. Faster than she wanted them to. After a minute of silence that passed between the two, Connie dug her hands further into her muff and looked towards the grey clouds. "Oh Jesse, you know me. I've been here, there and everywhere. Ask Vina. She's the one I've been spending most of my time with."

Connie could only hope she reached Vina before Jesse did. Sure Vina knew about her and Cailean and their 'adventures', but if questioned about it Connie wasn't a hundred percent sure of what Vina would say. "I've been holed up in my common room mostly. Charms this year is harder than I expected it to be."

Somehow and he wasn't sure why, Jesse wasn't entirely sure about Connie's answer to his question. It's not that she thought he was lying to her, he could always tell that, but right now he felt she was just avoiding the truth. Not that it was really any of his business, but since she had so very conveniently mentioned Vina, Jesse figured he could try and sweet talk some information out of the Scottish lass. Perhaps he should brush up on his Gaelic again after all.

"Somehow I doubt you've been holed up studying charms." He cocked his head to the side, looking at her from the corner of his eye. Connie was not exactly a bookworm, no, Jesse claimed that title, well maybe second to Lester, in the Hatchitt family. She was much more of a get up and go kind of girl, so he could easily believe that she'd been 'here, there and everywhere.' The question was, why wasn't she being truthful with her.

Having never been the one to outright ask people why they did what they did, Jesse knew that not everybody was as straightforward as he was. He'd probably have better luck getting information out of Vina, unless she was already on Connie's side of whatever this situation was. Then it could get tricky. The big problem was, he didn't know what it was.

"Though Charms is rather tricky." Jesse agreed. Classes were getting a bit tougher, though Jess hardly noticed. He was a social guy yes, but also a pretty good student. Wanting to work for the ministry when he graduated gave him the swift kick he needed to stay on top of his grades. They didn't accept any lackeys. He wasn't going to push her for information, rather play it cool and hope she spilled. They were twins after all, it wasn't like they could really keep secrets from one another.

She hated lying. No, she hated lying when it involved something of importance. In normal circumstances, Connie scorned upon liars. And yet she has become one of the biggest of them all. Every word that has come out of her mouth tonight, barring the quidditch comments, had been a lie. They were supposed to be twins. She was supposed to have his back and he was supposed to have her's. But if he knew - if he knew that she was involved with someone, he'd have to tell Gabe or worse, their father.

"Laugh all you want, when I become the next head auror you'll be regretful that you doubted me now." She joked and nudged his side. She wanted to get off the topic of what she had been up to. The more they talked about it, the more likely she was to spill the beans. "I'll be incredible and you'll be my servant."

That thought made her burst out with laughter. Jesse ... her servant - her slave. Waiting on her hand and foot. It'd be such a funny thought with him being the elder sibling and so mature. But Connie would never degrade someone to that point, she hated that her family had house elves in their possession. She'd never force someone to assist her, unless it was Cai and the service she was requesting was rather ... unladylike.

"Please," He scoffed. "I'll be playing professional quidditch and you'll be begging me for tickets to matches." While he wasn't sure what exactly he wanted to do after graduation, Jesse figured playing for one of the league teams was certainly an option and one he was conflicted about. While he thought he should do something legitimate with his schooling, the lure of playing in the league was very tempting. Becoming an auror was also an option, but he'd be damned if he was going to work for his sister; with her sure, but for her was completely out of the question. In all likelihood, he would end up at the hospital. He was much more intrigued by healing than being an auror. Plus if half of his siblings were going to go into crime fighting, somebody had to be around to patch them up.

"Being your servant is highly unlikely Sister Dearest." He chuckled, though assumed she would like that very much. "You best put some more effort into charms then if you want to become and auror." If she was having a hard time with charms now, getting into the auror training would be hard. But then again, if she put the time and effort into it, she'd be fine. Which brought his thoughts around full circle, to what she was hiding from him. Perhaps it was what was distracting her from her studies. He told himself he wasn't going to be nosy, so he kept on their current discussion.

He didn't even really know if she was hiding anything, but he had a sneaking suspicion that she wasn't being entirely honest with him. "How is Miss MacFusty?" He questioned, curious. Vina and Connie had been friends for a while and therefore Jesse and Vina were friends by association, but Jess figured they would have formed a friendship even without his twin in the picture. The only MacFusty girl was quite the personality and not entirely snobbish like a majority of the girls in the upper and middle class. Far too many of them were too superficial for Jesse's taste, but Vina said what was on her mind, in that frustratingly thick brogue of hers. She was off limits for sure, being such close friends with his sister, but he did enjoy conversing with her, it was rather amusing to say the least.

Why in the world did Jesse have to rub the fact that he could play quidditch and she couldn't in her face?  Wasn't it enough that she was getting married to a man who lived in the middle of nowhere and hated quidditch?  Shouldn't her twin know her better than that?  How sensitive of a topic it was when talked about in that manner?  Although to be fair on Jesse's part he wasn't exactly aware of Mister Marvalino as of yet, or the fact that after her wedding her captor would be taking her to Italy and taming her to be the perfect little wife.  Perfect little wife, Connie scoffed at the thought of that.  She was not perfect, nor would she ever be able to be a decent wife to anyone other than Cai.  She would never love anyone other than Cai.

"Buille íseal, deartháir, buille fuilteacha íseal." She muttered and kicked a lose stone in the grass.  Picking up her pace, for she really had no desire to be around her brother anymore because he was obviously not her twin, Connie turned back towards the looming castle and sighed.  Was there even a point for this?  Jesse would know soon enough, why not just tell him?  It was already set in stone - hell she already had a bloody wedding date, no sense in keeping a secret like this from the one person on Earth she was always supposed to be close to.  There was no sense in that at all.

"Ba mhaith leat a fhios agat cá bhí mé agus cén fáth a bhí mé ag gníomhú di greannmhar? Ba mhaith leat a fháil amach cén fáth nach raibh mé díreach mar an gcéanna Connie beag a riamh a ligean ar fud an domhain a fháil di síos!Tá mé go raibh gach rud mé riamh sracadh grá ar shiúl ó liom, le mo dóchas, mo mhianta, ar mo gach rud. Imithe, slán, slán." She kept up the Gaelic in case anyone was trying to eavesdrop.  She also talked quickly and emotionally in hopes that Jesse wouldn't be able to understand anything she said.  She'd feel better once she got this all off her chest.  Maybe it'd all just go away.

"Ní féidir liom éalú ó pósadh níos mó, Jesse. Ní dóigh liom go bhfuil aon rogha. Tá mé ag gabháil. Tá mé ag gabháil fuilteach le fear nach bhfuil a fhios agam fiú. Sin in amhras i athair a fhios fiú. Mar sin, ba mhaith leat a fháil amach cén fáth nach raibh mé Connie fuinniúil foirfe? Conas is féidir liom a bheith? Tá mé ag dul ar mire ag iarraidh seo a choinneáil faoi rún. Conas tá ceaptha agam le bheith ar an duine céanna nuair nach bhfuil mé cead a bheith níos mó liom!" Towards the end of her ... well her emotional breakdown of sorts, Connie began to cry.  Those damn streams of tears that quickly became unquenchable paraded down her cheeks as she stopped in her tracks.  There was never a time when she needed her twin to comfort her more than she did in this moment.

[O.O.C. Connie said : "Low blow, brother, low bloody blow." and then her long rant says "You want to know where I've been and why I've been acting funny?  You want to know why I haven't exactly been the same cheerful little Connie who never let the world get her down!  I've had everything I've ever loved ripped away from me, all my Hopes, my dreams, my everything.  Gone, bye bye.  I don't have an escape from marriage anymore, Jesse.  I don't have any options.  I'm engaged.  I'm bloody engaged to a man that i don't even know. That i doubt father even knows.  So you want to know why I haven't been perfect energetic Connie?  How could I be?  I've been going crazy trying to keep this a secret.  How am I supposed to be the same person when I am not allowed to be me anymore!"]

Merlin's beard he hated when she ranted in Gaelic. She should have known by now that he was the worst one in the entire family at being bilingual. Had they spoken it more frequently when they were younger, he may have gotten the hang of it faster, but it was truly a dying language, which was unfortunate, but true.

He also was not a fan of her mood swings. One moment they were laughing and joking, and the next thing he knew she was hollering at him in Gaelic then breaking down into tears. What was it with women anyway? Jesse was figuring they were all losing their minds, especially at this point in their lives. He was honestly glad he was a guy. He had no problem keeping up with her as she picked up the pace, but quickly rounded on him, losing him in their native language.

Fumbling with the Gaelic as she spoke rather quickly, he struggled to understand exactly what she was saying. As she finished, he stood there, hands in his pockets lost for what to say. On one had, he'd known that their father was all about marrying her off, it was the normal thing to do in society, especially if you were middle class and you could score an upper class mate. He didn't really agree with it and should have been angry for her at their father, but on the other hand, he wasn't entirely sure that an arranged marriage wouldn't be good for Connie. She was hotheaded and brash and while Jesse didn't think women needed to perfectly conform to society's standards, he thought she could use a little polishing.

He was however, no fool and would not be expressing those thoughts to his twin. Torn between being annoyed with her and feeling sorry for her, he came off most likely, as being indifferent. "How the hell was I supposed to know that Connie?" Really, he couldn't read minds. If she'd kept it a secret and their Da had kept it a secret, he wasn't exactly the kind to go messing with his father's business. His siblings' sure, but not his father's, he knew better than that. "What did you want me to do Con? Nobody told me. Knock it off with the Gaelic, you're loosing me." He snapped, unsure if he was more annoyed with her or their dad. The whole situation was stupid, but even if he asked his dad to change his mind, there was little change it would work.

"Look, I'm sorry, but since you didn't tell me, I couldn't exactly know that, or help you or know why you're so damn off." Merlin he hated watching her cry like that, but had never exactly dealt well with that kind of thing, with Connie, Vix or Mercy. It just wasn't his thing. He knew she was upset, and now he knew why, but taking it out on him was not going to help.

In all of two seconds, Connie realized the immense amount of stress she must of caused her family and how foolish she must look. It wasn't Jesse's fault she didn't tell anyone, she didn't want to believe it. How could she? Things were so perfect with Cailean and she truly loved him, and now her bloody father had to go about arranging her engagement to a creep. None of this held any meaning to Jesse, he wasn't getting married, he needn't worry about father arranging his marriage; all Jesse needed to focus on was getting a good job outside of school.

This isn't to say that Connie believed Jesse didn't care about her situation, they were family and whether he was about to pick up arms with her or allow it to happen-he had to have some form of opinion on the matter. "No, Jess. I shouldn't of flipped like that." She mumbled as she wiped stray tears away. There were much better times for a mental breakdown, in her dorm room with the curtains closed for instance, or perhaps when she herself finally told Cai.

Six words he had said kept spinning round and round her mind, 'what did you want me to do?' What did she hope to accomplish by ranting at her brother? Receive his comfort was a given, but she didn't normally seek comfort so that was a method to be thrown out the window. What did she want? Help maybe. What did she want help with though? She couldn't exactly kill him. That would take too much time and effort, but more importantly it would probably come back to her. What did she want help with then?

And then it hit her, she wanted him to help her find a way out.

Just as quickly as the idea flooded her mind, it fled. He'd never consent to it, and she had too much pride to ever involve him. She had to find a way out on her own. "I don't know what I want from you, Jess. I haven't told anyone that. Only mother and father know. Gabe doesn't even know. But I will tell you one more thing, I won't be getting married to some creep. If that's the case I won't be getting married at all."

Thankfully her tears began to slow while Jesse just stood there like a moron, waiting her out as best he could. He could never really handle it whenever any of his sisters cried, unless it was something trivial like a minor injury. Those he was quite capable of handling it, in fact he was quite adept at it, but this, this was something he was lost at. She seemed to be coming around again, back to a more reasonable semblance of normal Connie. It appeared as if she had just needed to get it all off of her chest.

It took a while for her to speak again, so Jesse shoved his hands back into the pockets of his pants, kicking around at the loose dirt on the ground. He had infinite patience with his siblings when they were not yelling at him. Unfortunately, his twin knew how best to push his buttons the fastest. Jess tried very hard to be patient with her, but for some reason he just couldn't. In this situation, where he was at a loss for what to do, he could wait until he was told what to do.

Of course, her famous stubborn streak came right out and Jess could see that familiar glint in her eye. She meant everything she said and he had no doubt she would fight their father tooth and nail to get what she wanted. The only question was, by what means would she achieve her goal? Jess had no doubts she'd do what she had to, but the damage may be irreparable. Their entire family was hotheaded and often said things they didn't mean. Jess was not ready for a family war because he had no idea which side to choose.

"Have you tried talking to Da?' He suggested, very calmly, looking up at her for the first time in a few minutes. She looked... more mature than she should at seventeen. It was a little scary really. They didn't hang out nearly as much as they had when they were younger, they had grown up and apart quite a bit, but she was still his twin. "It's worth a try Connie, he's not a completely unreasonable man. And you should tell Gabe, he may be able to sway father away from it, if that's what you really want." Gabe, after all, was more Connie's guardian than their own parents. They were lucky to have an older brother like Gabe, he was always looking out for them. On a shrug, he reached out to her tentatively to pull her into a hug, resting his chin on top of her head. "We'll figure it out." Merlin, he hoped they would.

Jesse's patience had always irked Connie. She always wanted him to stand besides her and fight for the same cause. His quietness, acceptance, and intelligence always proved to be a point of her envy. He was consistently regarded as the smart one of the two, even from a young age. Connie was the 'aggressive' child, the one that could send the nanny running from the room with the blink of an eye. Everyone loved Jesse. And what reason did they have not to? He was practically perfect. He was the embodiment of everything she wasn't.

Sometimes it was hard not to express her anger towards him. Sure, she could rant for hours in Gaelic and he'd only pick up the basics of it, and she could do things she knew would irk him. But he'd never feel the full extent of her anger. Up until recently Connie hadn't even known it was there, bubbling on the surface. He'd never understand. They were too opposite.

She stared at the ground wondering if she could somehow make a hole to swallow her up and spit her back out when this whole mess was over. "It's already arranged, Jess. I argued with him for weeks via letters and whenever I see him I make a point of arguing. And Gabe would be happy for my engagement, after that stunt I pulled." There were so many options. She could run away, grab Cai and make a break for it. She was too close to her family though for that to happen. "It's not until after graduation anyway, as long as I behave. I have plenty of time to fight."

If it came down to it, Connie would fight tooth and nail to avoid the altar. Mr. Summerby was looking for a cute and perfect wife. Prim, proper, everything that she wasn't. And if for some reason he managed to subdue her enough to get her to marry him, she'd never truly be married to him. In her heart it would always be Cai.

Where the hell had he been, really? All of this was going on in their family and he wasn't even privy to it. Clearly he had to have a discussion with their father about keeping him informed. Sure, he wasn't the oldest, but he was the most level-headed out of the elder Hatchitts, surely he could be included in some of the family news. Jesse was not an oblivious man by any means, but when people were making efforts to keep things under wraps, he wanted to know why.

Her stubbornness would probably get hr out of this in the end, but it was likely to be a huge family battle from here on until then. Everything was going to get topsy turvey from now on. He always wondered how his family even functioned on a daily basis was beyond astonishing to him.

"Well keep up that attitude and I'm sure everything will work out in the end." She was right, they still had their entire seventh year to dissuade their father and dissolve the situation. While Jesse thought his father had their best interests at heart, sometimes his means of getting there were severely misguided. Jess had to wonder what both his father and brother were thinking. Clearly this entire situation was distressing for Connie and while he figured that yes, she would one day become engaged, he'd had hopes that it would be to somebody she liked, or could at least tolerate.

This was going to be a long hard battle, for sure. "Well on that note I think I have a strongly worded letter to write to Da." He shrugged and began to think of how best to articulate his thoughts on this matter. While his words may fall on deaf ears in the matter, he could not help but to let father know exactly how he felt about how their family operated. "And please don't keep anything else from me Con, we've got to stick together." He gave her a slow smile and another shrug. He didn't plan to wage war on their family, but at least they should have their voices be heard.
