The pain of the transformation was something that Orion had tried numbing himself to after so many years. It had been excruciating beyond words for the first few years, but his pain tolerance just seemed to rise with every passing year. Oh, it still hurt like a bitch and he still screamed bloody murder, but he was much number than he had been before. No one would ever understand the pain of a transformation until they went through it themselves, and he didn't know anyone else that did. There were plenty of werewolves out there, sure, but none that Orion had stumbled upon yet. Truthfully, though? He actually didn't give a rat's arse enough to find them.

His entire body burned, meaning his time as a wolf was now over. His spine cracked and he was forced from all fours to his hind legs as his bones painfully shifted and changed shape entirely. He was sent reeling backward from the force of the transformation - he didn't lose his footing, but very nearly. His back colliding with a tree helped him gain his balance, his dirty and calloused hands grasping at the trunk to keep him upright. The pain was brief and excruciating, as always. His mind was racing, eyes wide and pointed in the direction of the pitch black night sky through the thick brush of the trees.

It was a warm night, and that didn't help as the sweat poured down his dark body, every muscle exhausted from the exertion that the transformation caused. His breathing was heavy and quick now, his eyes looking around wildly. Where the bloody fuck had he left his clothes? He could have sworn... Damn it all. He had wandered too far. Frustration easily settling in, Orion punched the tree that had only minutes before he had been clutching for dear life. God damnit. Trying to remember where he had put his clothes, the groundskeeper racked his brain. Unfortunately before he could reach that specific memory, those of this night flooded the forefront of his mind. The blood of several deer poured onto the ground, their innards positively devoured. He made a face at the taste of the blood - it wasn't nearly as appetizing as a human. No wonder he felt full.

Ah hah! There it was. He could remember the tree he had placed his belongings by - it had a very distinctive knot that he would definitely remember if he came across it again. And it was definitely to the North. Just as he was about to head in that direction, he heard the muffled crunching of leaves and twigs. Turning quickly, Orion narrowed his eyes and tried to peek through the brush.

"Who's 'ere?" he called in his rough accent, ever the fearless dolt. "Show yerself."

Vera's only thought upon the transformation back into her considerably smaller human body was finally. The past three nights had been the longest of her life. The mornings hadn't been the best either, by a long shot. Once she regained feeling in her hands and legs, she picked herself up off the ground and began brushing off foilage and dirt from where it stuck to her body. It didn't do much, but leaves were removed from places where leaves should never have been in the first place and that was good enough as far as Vera was concerned.

Stretching her arms over her head, she groaned when she heard something pop. Immediately something in her back felt better but the popping noise wasn't something a back should probably have made. Vera found herself used to that by now, though. This year made it over half of her life that she'd been... doing this. The excruciating pain was a good friend by now, and maybe she even deserved it. She didn't even know what she was telling herself now, but mind tired and nerve-endings still twitchy with tremors of the change, she found she couldn't care less.

Tavish was out of her life, and engaged to Ethelyn. She shouldn't have, and she knew this now, continued going to the Hog's Head after finding out that Ethelyn was employed there. It was the only place she could get a drink, busy being the 'scum of the earth' she was considered at the Three Broomsticks, but it wasn't worth having to cover her face and get the fuck out whenever she caught a glimpse of him. And then the baby had happened. She was too numb to think about that. It was too fresh in her mind.

Figuring she was somewhere much farther into the forest than she'd intended to be, Vera started off to the south. The centaur herds didn't take kindly to humans, no matter if they were only human part of the time or not. Her clothing was stashed in the branches of a tree somewhere to the south, if she was where she though she was, so in that direction she went. She'd been walking for only a few minutes when she stopped in her tracks, hearing noises that were just not made by small animals.

When a voice called out, she was tempted to bolt, but as she made the move to, her leg muscles simply wouldn't have it. "You show yourself first!" she called out brazenly. Hastily she made her way to hide behind a tree, hopefully successfully obscuring herself from view. The man - for the voice was assuredly masculine - couldn't do anything to her that hadn't already been done so, sure, she wasn't afraid, but Vera wasn't stupid enough to go hurling herself into dangerous situations. And running into a person in the middle of a forest called the Forbidden Forest was almost definitely dangerous.

One would think that walking around the Forbidden Forest in the middle of the night - er, morning? - entirely in the nude was dangerous. No one knew what was lurking within the brush. Orion did, though. He was as familiar with this forest as he was with the back of his own hand (usually, when he hadn't misplaced his belongings). He was a creature of the Forbidden Forest, and as such displayed very little fear while navigating it. Whether or not that was foolish, he didn't know, nor did he care. He often laughed in the face of danger - a trait some might think foolish, others might think courageous. In fact, it was probably the only trait that landed him in the Gryffindor house to begin with. He'd really had no idea how that happened.

Therefore, when he heard the sudden noise, he didn't bother covering up. Whoever was happening through this deep in the forest, and at such an early hour deserved to see his entire package. When the offending twig-snapper spoke back, he was a bit shocked at first. A dame? What in the bleeding hell was a woman doing in the Forbidden Forest at this hour? This was no place for a woman. Unless... perhaps she was his kind of woman. Merlin, he hoped so. The voice was close too... very close. Stepping away from the tree that had been propping him up, Orion turned around to see a bit of dark hair betraying her hiding place. She had hid behind his tree! Perfect.

A smug smile crossed his lips. "I asked you first," he responded, folding his arms across his chest and taking a step closer to the trunk. He had no idea who this woman was, or what she was doing on what he had always thought his territory, but he wanted to find out. Bracing his hands against the wide trunk, he took a chance and peeked around the corner, his curious gaze falling upon the pale, slight figure of the woman in question.

"Bloody hell!" he responded upon the sight of her. Clearly she hadn't been expecting anyone to find her - she was just as stark naked as he was. Her skin was creamy and pale, her hair dark and complimentary. In fact, she was very attractive. But why in the bloody hell was she nude? Not that he was complaining. She had a very nice silhouette indeed. He just wanted some answers. "What the hell are you naked for?!"

Well, that was a hypocritical question if he ever heard one.

Thanking whatever god there was that she didn't have a weak heart, she nearly jumped out of her skin when the man's voice came from much closer than she anticipated. It seemed like she'd picked a horrible hiding place, after all, because it took only a moment for him to find her. She was still in relative shock when he asked her why she was naked, which was about when Vera remembered that fact herself and quickly crossed her arms over her chest. "I could ask you the same!" she huffed with a glare. The man himself was without a stitch of clothing, and seemed rather proud of that fact. Men.

Vera quit her crouching behind the tree and straightened up, hands now on her hips. It wasn't like she hadn't already given him an eyeful, and she stood no chance against him if he wanted to do anything untoward. Hell, he was at least half a foot taller than her. "Just what are you doing this far in the forest?" she demanded. This was the first time she'd happened upon someone in her time going out into the Forbidden Forest to change - and of course it had to be before she'd gotten into her clothing! Her luck just kept getting better and better.

The man was tall - not the first word that popped into her mind to describe him, but certainly true. Not as tall as Tavish, though. He was covered in dirt and, well... he looked like her. Vera knew from the sore feeling in her jaw that she'd had an active night hunting wise, even if she only remembered blurry shapes. She also got the clue from the dried blood in patches on her skin. Too much to be hers, she'd though ruefully when she'd first awoken. And this man had blood on him, too, spots of rust colored 'dirt' all over his muscular torso and... lower places that Vera's eyes didn't linger. Rather, she hoped they didn't linger.

She didn't want to come out and say she was a werewolf, if only for a feeling she should withhold that information until the man told his side of the story. Saying you were a beast three nights a month didn't exactly make people think highly of you, and Vera didn't want to give this man another reason to dislike her. It was the middle of the Forbidden Forest. There was no way someone her size could fend off someone his size even if she'd had her wand! To be fair, she probably could hurt him with a well-placed kick and at least get a head start, but the fight-or-flight instinct hadn't quite kicked in enough for her to act on it.

He smirked as she jumped away, his element of surprise having proven effective. This woman had some spunk - a trait that he could definitely appreciate in the opposite sex. What fun would it be if a woman were meek and agreeable? Hardly. She made a pathetic attempt to cover her breasts, but it was too late anyway - he’d already got an eyeful, and could do nothing but praise them. Not out loud, of course. Actually, why not? He nodded in the direction of her chest, now disappointingly covered. “I already got a peek, you know,” he said, remaining nonchalant - a feat difficult to pull off given the natural gruff to his tone. “You should be proud of ‘em.”

Her hands moved to her hips, and Orion couldn’t help but think his apparent appreciation of her bosom had something to do with it. It didn’t, of course, but a man could presume. Even her stance radiated attitude. He was really quite enjoying this - in fact, it was likely the most entertaining encounter he’d had with a dame in quite some time. And there wasn’t even any sex! Yet.

Just as quickly as she had jumped to defend herself moments ago, she began demanding answers from him. As if she had any right to know why he was in the forest - he had been coming to the forest to transform since the move to Hogsmeade, and had never run into this suspicious witch before. Besides, he was the man here. He was more likely to be there of the two of them. “I don’t ‘ave to explain myself, love,” he said, folding his own arms across his chest and staring her down. “If anything, you should be doing the explaining. What’s a dame like you doing in the Forbidden Forest so late? I ain’t never seen you ‘ere before.”

Rather than staring at her feminine genitalia as he had been doing for the past few minutes, Orion began to consider the smaller physical details of the woman before him. She looked to be his age, or at least not far off. And she was dirty... just as dirty and blood-stained as he was. The soil and grime of the forest had set up camp atop her lovely pale skin, and while a gentleman might’ve thought it either disgusting or a travesty, Orion could help the crooked smile that tugged at the corner of his lips. Even the blood stains were cause for some twisted pleasure for him. And the fact remained that she was completely naked. Why in the name of Merlin would a woman be naked in the middle of a forest, covered in dirt and blood? The only explanation he could muster was... Nah. She couldn’t... could she? There wasn’t really any other reason she would just as hellish as he did, in his opinion.

Lowering his arms - in a way, lowering his defenses as well - Orion narrowed his eyes and met hers, taking several steps closer. His next question was simple enough.

    “What are you?”

When the man seemed more interested in looking than actually touching, Vera calmed down and gave a sarcastic smile. "Why, thank you. I always appreciate the compliments of naked men running about the Forbidden Forest." she drawled with a roll of her eyes. It was strange to run into someone like this in the first place but to have that someone start ogling her breasts? Vera felt that she should be used to the usual strangeness that came with being a werewolf and having spent seven years in hell-on-earth, but she wasn't. She had some shame left, after all, even if she'd given up on trying to cover herself up. They were even, after, seeing as he wasn't doing anything but standing there with a stupid smirk on his face.

On her face, though, was an indignant stare. She probably should have taken her chances with bolting rather than staying around and having a chat with, possibly, the second Hogsmeade Slasher, but damn if everything still hurt from the past three days of howling at the moon.

"Y'don't have to explain yourself, sweetheart, but I do? Logic, mate. You've got plenty." she said with a scoff, looking away. Vera didn't have to say anything at all, nor did she particularly feel in the mood for talking about anything. Nearly four years without running into a soul and her bloody streak had to end right when everything was turning to shite in her life. She only hoped she wouldn't be murdered and left in a shallow grave in the middle of nowhere. Not like anyone would care. "Just because I'm a 'dame' doesn't mean I'm not allowed out here."

She was purposefully avoiding answering him for a reason that she wasn't quite sure of. But Vera couldn't exactly avoid him when he got about three inches from her face and asked her what she was. Rather dumbly, she noted that his breath was less than pleasant. Then again, her own probably wasn't much better. Eating the innards of deer and whatever other poor unsuspecting creature that crossed paths with her did that to someone. Other than that, his eyes caught her attention - the lightest green she'd ever seen. He was undeniably attractive, yes, but attraction led to sex and Merlin only knew what else and love and things she just wasn't ready to deal with at the moment, so she pushed that thought aside. Rotten breath, not beautiful eyes, was what Vera tried to focus on.

"A werewolf." she challenged, chin raised and eyes on his. From his state, she'd come to the conclusion that he was one of her kind, as well. Either that or he had even more of a shite life than Vera did. He had to be pretty dense to have not come to the conclusion that she was a werewolf - but then again, it was still dark out and even she was a little out of it, so perhaps he wasn't the half-wit his brawn suggested he was.

Well, this one was sassy. Rather than giving him any useful information, she just continued to challenge him right back. In fact, he would have gotten bored of her were it not for her snappy comebacks. He liked a woman with spunk. He scowled at her and raised his eyebrow as she insulted his logic. He couldn’t deny that he might not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but he wasn’t daft. What the bloody hell did she know about him, she had known him for five minutes. Claiming she had just as much right to be here as he did, Orion shrugged. “Your prerogative if ya wanna go hurlin’ yourself into the throes of danger this place holds,” he commented in return. “Fearlessness is something I can appreciate.”

Why the hell hadn’t she run yet? People usually didn’t approach him on principle while he was out for an evening stroll in Hogsmeade, let alone naked in the Forbidden Forest. Students tended to stay out of his way as well, if they ever happened across him while he was working on the grounds. He had accepted long ago that he was a difficult person to get along with, and that was entirely fine with him. This lady was something else, that was for sure. Clearly she wasn’t familiar with him or his ill repute. He didn’t quite know what to make of her.

Werewolf. As soon as the word left her lips, Orion replaced his questioning sneer with a grin, his expression almost entirely indiscernable otherwise. Of course she was a werewolf. He had reached that conclusion before he had asked, but he wasn’t about to be the first to admit what he was - you never know. He let out a gruff chuckle and took a single step back. He had never associated with, or even met another werewolf before. Unless he counted the cemetery attack that landed him in this position to begin with. But he didn’t.

“Riddle me this, lass,” began Orion, tilting his head upward and looking down at her. “I’ve been coming here every month for the past seven years. Why is this the first time I’m seein’ ya? D’you come ‘ere often?” What a poorly placed pick-up line. Either she was new to the area, or it had been sheer dumb luck that they’d avoided each other all these years. The night air was a bit crisp and the heat from his transformation had long since worn off, and suddenly Orion was reminded that his clothes were several yards away.

When he grinned, she considered her suspicions confirmed. Why he was happy or glad or whatever it was that she was also a werewolf was beyond her, but it made it a little less likely that he was going to turn out to be a psychopath (she hoped) so she was fine with it.

"Seven years? I've been coming out here for four. Guess it's just luck, really. Name's Vera by the way, not lass or dame, and you?" she replied, extending a hand. It was a ridiculous formality at this point, but habits were habits, and a handshake always followed an introduction in Vera's book. No matter how many stitches of clothing she, or the other party, wore. Which was not much. From their surroundings, she was pretty sure her clothing was still quite a long walk away, which would make things awkward very fast.

It was unnerving how she was no longer very perturbed at the sight of a naked man. Vera'd seen it all before, anyways, right? Of course she'd never seen a man covered in blood and dirt and Merlin only knew what else, but it was pretty much the same. Except strangely attractive, but she didn't want to think about that because that would lead her to think about other things. She'd done enough thinking in the past month to last her a lifetime..

"I don't wanna be rude but my clothes are a few miles that way," she started, pointing over his shoulder. "And I'd like to get to them soon, so I think I'm gonna get going." It was the honest truth, anyways, and she didn't want to talk. Internalizing things was rubbish, too, but... This man was a random stranger and she was in a state that rendered her liable to tell her whole Greek tragedy of a life story and no. Plus, not only was she naked, but her prisoner's tattoo was unglamored on the inside of her left forearm and fuck if she wanted to tell a perfect stranger any of that. The only good thing that could come of that was that maybe the tattoo would scare the guy off, but Vera didn't think that this one was easily scared.

Four years. For the longest time he had figured he was the only werewolf to prowl the Forbidden Forest three days a month, but he had been sorely wrong. For all he knew there could be a dozen more. Wolves were pack animals, this much he knew, but he had grown up a lone wolf. Even if there were others, he couldn’t have given a flying shit if he ran into them. Luckily, he had happened across a very attractive naked woman, but if he had run into a man? This conversation, as weird as it was, never would have happened.

He reached out her hand as if by force of habit, and Orion looked at it skeptically for a brief moment. Really? Nonetheless, he extended his and grasped her smaller hand firmly within his large one. His hands were rough, but hers were soft to the touch. He hadn’t shaken hands with a woman in a long time. Then again, most women he interacted with were there for an entirely different purpose. And who shook hands before sex? That was just plain strange. Vera - short and easy to remember and quite lovely. His chances of running into her again were slim, given that they’d somehow avoided each other for four years, but if there ever was a next time, he would have a name. Not like it would matter, he’d still end up calling her some other female adjective.

“Guess so. The name’s Orion,” he responded simply. Huh. It seemed that somehow, Orion had procured his first acquaintance in quite some time. And a woman, no less! And not for sex, no less! Well, that remained to be seen. He was no saint, and he’d be lying if he didn’t admit that the thought crossed his mind multiple times in the past ten minutes. Good thing he wasn’t an honest man.

She was itching to get her clothes back on, and he didn’t blame her. It was a bit nippy. He had temporarily forgot about the breeze though, having noticed the tattoo on her forearm as she pointed. She just got a whole hell of a lot more interesting, as if an attractive female werewolf wasn’t enough. He knew better than to just point it out though, simple as he may have been. Instead, he kept conversation going as normal. Maybe he could weasel it out of her if she decided to stick around.

“No one’s stoppin’ ye, though ye look just fine the way ye are,” he said with a shrug of his shoulders and a smirk, looking in the direction of his own clothes. They were closer, merely a few yards. “Mine are just over ‘ere,” he said matter-of-factly, and began walking in their direction without even a backward glance, possibly just expecting her to follow. He’d follow her if the tables were turned if only to bother her, but she likely wasn’t as big a git as he was. And he wouldn’t be bothered if she did.

Orion, then. He had a good grip, which was to be expected from the hulk of a man he was. She felt even more stupid when the handshake finally ended, but first impressions didn't really matter when they happened in the middle of the forest and in the buff. His hands were calloused and rough like Tav's, whereas hers were smooth and just a bit bony. Working at a candy shop was nothing compared to the manual labor she would've been doing had she stayed in London. Orion seemed the type to be lifting things and doing hard work, so that accounted for his weathered hands. The ridiculous school-girl in her made a comment about big hands that Vera knew she could confirm with a swift glance below his waist, but she was neither tempted nor compelled to do so.

"Well, good for you, then." she mumbled under her breath as he sauntered off to get his clothes. He was teasing her, of course; she had enough dealings with men to know that tone. The breeze in the forest, more annoying than anything, was the main reason she wanted to get to her stuff, but it looking like Vera would have to pray no other strangers were lurking about and brave the journey through the- Wait a minute.

If he had his stuff nearby, then that meant he had his wand. Wands meant apparition. She'd only known Orion for the past ten minutes, but perhaps she could convince him to side-along her to the hedgerow hazel she hid her things in. From the minutes she'd known him for, though, she could tell that he was anything but a saint - Vera wasn't one to see the good in people anymore. But she was naked and enticing, and men were but tools for a wily woman to use.

She walked around the tree to where he'd gone to find his clothing, a smirk finding it's way on her face unbeknownst to her. "So, uh... how long've you been a werewolf?" she asked, hoping to start a conversation. It may have been a bit obvious that she wanted something from him, but Vera thought herself the most subtle of the subtle. And as such, she made sure to stand with her chest out and a hip cocked to the side. She might not have been good enough for Tavish but she was probably good enough for a werewolf scoundrel.

He knew she would follow. Although, he couldn’t fathom why. Women usually did follow him when he pulled stunts like that, if only for curiosity’s sake. That, and most of the women he mingled with had little pride to do otherwise. Most of them wanted sex just as much as he did, so it worked in everyone’s favour. Vera didn’t want sex, that much was obvious. She had been looking everywhere but his very on-display and very impressive in his opinion package below the waist. She had too much pride and too much self-worth to get involved with the likes of him.

But follow she did. Hell, she even began trying to strike up conversation. Looking down at her as he walked, he cocked an eyebrow. The bloody hell did she care how long he’d been a werewolf? Not long after her question, chest was out and begging to be ogled - Orion complied, stealing a sideways glance, and suddenly had no problem sharing this information. He was only a man, after all. A very horny man. And she was a very attractive woman. He licked his lips vaguely. Whether or not she was trying to get something out of him, he didn’t know nor care. She likely wouldn’t get it anyway - he wasn’t a gentleman by any means.

“Since I was sixteen,” he explained simply, prying his eyes away from her chest and back in the direction he was walking. “Twelve years.” Now she knew how old he was - that more information than he usually ever shared upon a first meeting, but she had asked. His eyes made their way back to her, trying very hard to avoid all but staring and drooling at her very prominent and impressive breasts. “Why ye askin’? How long ye been one?” He wasn’t really used to regular conversation, to be honest.

The tree housing his clothes was in sight now, and he strolled leisurely over to it, immediately recognizing the familiar knot. There was a fairly deep hole within it - perhaps an owl had lived there once before. Every time he came into the forest to transform, he tucked his clothing into that very opening, and somehow always had trouble finding it after the fact. “Well, this is my stop,” he said non-chalantly, pulling his wrinkled and dirty clothing out of the tree, smiling at her all the while. If she wanted something from him, now was the time to ask. Not that she’d get it.
