Artemis Theron van Helsing was the third child and third daughter born to Abraham and Mina van Helsing. She was a relatively good child, and her parents heard nothing but good things from their nanny. Artemis was the first child to sleep through the night from the time of infancy and would eat when she was fed and never put up much of a fight about anything. They were pleased that she was a god child and Abraham was exceptionally excited that she seemed to be so laid back and easy going. Perhaps that would be a good sign and she would take to her father’s vampire hunting lessons.
When Artemis was only a year old, her mother gave birth to another daughter- Roxanne. At only one year old, Artemis didn’t understand the new addition to the family, and ignored her sister’s existence for the most part, sticking to her nanny and her older sisters. Though her nanny took care of her, Artemis always loved to toddle after her big sisters, especially Corinne who was only a year and a half older than her. It wasn’t until the youngest van Helsing was born and Artemis was three and a half that she actually understood the concept of younger siblings. At three, she didn’t exactly piece together the fact that the older siblings take care of the younger ones, but started to follow her mother around with much more interest after the baby of the family was born. She watched her mother in the kitchen, socializing with other women, showing love and affection to her daughters… whenever she could spy on her mother, Artemis did. She was never actively close with her mother, but enjoyed watching her grace and beauty from afar.
From watching her mother, Artemis gained the insight and knowledge to understand how to be a proper young lady, though a proper young lady is not something she ever wanted to be. Instead, Artemis chose to actively tag along with Daddy whenever she was allowed to. Despite the fact all vampire hunting training starts for van Helsing children at six, Abraham made an exception for Artemis, who had always shown an immense interest in the hunt, and started her training a year earlier. She worked hard, even at five, to prove to her father that he had made the right choice in allowing her to train early. She bonds with her father, and learns his inner workings. Artemis enjoys spending time with her father, but at the same time misses spending time with her younger siblings. Two years go by before Roxanne is introduced to the trainings, and Artemis is happy that another sister has joined them.
When Artemis was just seven years old, the family takes a holiday to the United States for their father’s job. Mina takes the girls to New York while their father hunts an aggressive vampire he doesn’t want to subject his family to. During their stay in the Big Apple, Mina takes Valentine, the only daughter interested, to the theatre. Later that night when Valentine returns, alone, Artemis instinctively (or, perhaps it was the fact that, at that age, she thought everything was a a vampire attack) knew what happened- a vampire attack. Valetine was distraught and while the other girls tried to console their sister, Artemis actively thought about how to find the vampire that killed their mother. After her sisters went to bed, Artemis snuck out- her first sign of magic, though late- was slipping through the door of their bedroom. She walked through the streets, in an out of buildings with her newfound ability to walk through solid things. She found nothing and managed to achieve nothing but get lost for several hours before finding her way back to where they were staying. As she got to their room, Artemis realized she could no longer walk through solid objects and fell asleep outside of their room.
After their return from America, Valentine joined the older girls in their training. Though Artemis tried to help Valie as much as possible, she pinpointed her inability to hunt from the start and worked hard to try to compensate wherever Valie failed. Artemis has a strong sense of loyalty and dedication to the members of her family, no more and no less, and felt compelled to ensure that whatever tasks Valie was assigned were completed and completed well so that she could continue training with the rest of the family and hopefully prove Artemis’s original judgment wrong.
Artemis, at eleven, receives her letter to Hogwarts and is only moderately excited. While she is excited to join her two older sisters at school, she is upset and distraught over the idea that she might have to stop her training, even for a small amount of time, in order to book learn. Though, through her father’s insistence, Artemis packs up her belongings and on the first of September, heads off to school. She is greeted by a sister in Ravenclaw and a sister in Slytherin, and when the hat is placed on her head, it has a hard time deciding between the two for her. While intelligent, she is also crafty and manipulative. Artemis’s desire to be a participatory learner instead of one who is buried in books, is ultimately what sends her to Slytherin over Ravenclaw.
Throughout her first few years in school, Artemis did moderately well, passing all of her classes but never quite excelling in any of them. She blames this on the fact she cannot book learn and prefers to be out in the field actually doing something as opposed to in a classroom reading about theories and trying to gain an understanding of why certain spells were done and used. Halfway through her second year, Artemis started dreaming about being seventeen and able to use magic unrestrained.
During Artemis’s fifth year at school, Abraham takes a new wife, one the girls don’t approve of. The feeling is seemingly mutual between everyone and the seven daughters begin to discuss ways to get rid of Sadie. Artemis instantly takes charge of the mission and uses her ‘pack leader’ mentality to pull out the strengths in all of her sisters and use them to the best they can be used. She also uses this opportunity to become extremely buddy buddy with her stepmother and the two spend much time ‘bonding’ over letters and on outings when Artemis is home from school on Holiday. It is through this time bonding with her stepmother that Artemis learns of Sadie’s plans to become pregnant as soon as possible and send away the van Helsing daughters (especially those old enough to bear children) in order to be the first to have a male heir. Artemis knows exactly what she must do and, instead of trying to come up with some sort of alternative plan, speaks with only Corinne of her ideas.
Artemis spends the entire summer before her sixth year at Hogwarts attempting to get pregnant. The Order of the Dawn encourages van Helsing women to have children out of wedlock, of which she is thankful so that she can put her plan into action and hopefully destroy her stepmother’s dreams of having a male heir in order to inherit everything that is van Helsing. This proves unfruitful, and is determined to continue her actions at Hogwarts. She finds a few who are willing to sleep with her, but not many, and Artemis makes it a habit to continue to see each of them in order to fulfill her plans. In November, Artemis writes to Corinne, excited to explain that her period is late and that she’s been nauseas day in and day out for the past couple of weeks. Though she knows she’ll have to leave school because of the pregnancy, Artemis is not phased by it at all. Instead, when she goes home for the Christmas holiday, she packs all of her belongings and has no plans on going back to school. Artemis is all too aware that even if she left Hogwarts, her father would get her the best tutors and she would continue her education anyway. Over Christmas, Sadie announces her pregnancy to the family, only to be one upped by Artemis standing up at the table, exclaiming that she is also with child, a month further along than Sadie. Although she acts distraught by the news in order to gain some sympathy from Sadie, Artemis knows that there’s a good chance she’s ruined any type of bond she might have had with her stepmother. Now, it’s all or nothing.
