“Thank you for the lovely dance, Mr. Branson. I have quite enjoyed myself,” Adamina said modestly to the young man before her whom seemed particularly eager to be in her good graces. Mr. Branson was a good friend of her elder brothers and he had always been very kind towards her, so she honestly saw no reason to refuse his offer of a dance, but she had to admit that perhaps he tried a little too hard to impress her. She would honestly find his constant attentions flattering if it were not for the fact that he felt that it was his duty to ensure that she was entertained at every social function, and she was beginning to tire of his endless flattery.

After being escorted by Mr. Branson back to her original place next to her elder brother, Ada’s eyes searched about the ballroom for an unoccupied seat. Though she had only danced a few numbers in the last two hours, her feet were already becoming sore due to the new dancing slippers she had purchased specifically for this ball. Her decision to purchase a whole new wardrobe that summer had consisted of becoming used to a new style of shoes which had a higher heel, and since the shoes were still relatively new, they pinched her toes something dreadful. However, before she could further scour her surroundings for a seat, a familiar fair-haired and ethereally young woman caught her attention.

“My dear Miss Crouch!,” she called out in a chipper tone at a respectable volume. “How do you do? I did not see you dance many numbers, so I had assumed that you would not be attending.”

Nova was clutching her little lyre to her as though it were some sort of shield against those at the ball. She had already lost her brother once during the evening and while she could see where he was from a distance now, she felt uncomfortable all the same. Her dress made her feel too conspicuous still and she had had very few offers to dance. She couldn't understand why she was seemingly spurned so - she knew very well that she was not unattractive and she was not lacking a good reputation or family either so what possible reason could there be for avoiding her? It was likely the dour look she often wore on her face as though someone had just died. She didn't mean to look eternally melancholy but she just did.

She was wandering over to the seats to sit herself down and contemplate her lack of attachment when she heard her name being called and looked up. Nova knew Miss Flamel from school. They had not been in the same house or year but they were in the same social circles and similar in age, it was near impossible not to know her. She drew closer before speaking in order to hold a conversation as seemed to be what Miss Flamel was after. "I am quite well, thank you. I trust you are also well?" She wasn't all too sure why Miss Flamel was initiating conversation with her when they were not one might call exceptionally close but she wasn't about to be rude either and brush her off and it really wasn't as though she had anything else to be doing, no one was dancing with her! "How could I possibly miss such a gathering?" She didn't sound all too certain about that but rather as if she thought it was the right thing to say when really she had wanted to stay home.

August wasn't sure why he had decided to come to this.

Okay, yes he was - he had come to the Maroc's ball in order to keep up the illusion that he was actually trying to get married even post-Lyra, but he was already regretting this decision and thinking that maybe his mother harassing him was a worthy sacrifice for avoiding adventures like these. He was dressed like Hermes, mostly because his owl was named Hermes and it was all he could think of, and August was gripping his cane like it was a shield.

Maybe it was; a shield against feeling like he ought to ask someone to dance.

After striking up a conversation with a 'friend' from Black's and being utterly bored for the duration, August had headed off towards the seats. He hoped desperately that he could find a conversation partner that wouldn't make him strongly consider the merits of becoming a shut-in.

Mercifully, he spotted Teddy Flamel's younger sister and was far too thrilled by the prospect of hearing what his school friend was up to to find someone else. "I do hate to interrupt," August said with a nod to both young women, "But Miss Flamel, I would very much like for you to extend my well-wishes to your sister whenever you next hear from her, my owl is completely refusing to carry letters to wherever she is." Either that or Hermes was just sick of mailing August's letters.

He raised his eyebrows, very much intending to putter back off as soon as Miss Adamina responded to his request.

“I am quite lovely,” Ada replied, her gown of pink and gold swishing about her ankles as she settled herself next to Miss Crouch. She was honestly unsure of the reason why she had singled out the pretty young woman from all of her other acquaintances whom were also attending the Maroc’s ball, but there was a instinct within her gut that informed her that her impulsive greeting had been the right course of action. She rather felt as if something good was about to occur, and whom was she to dismiss fortunate happenings. “I apologize for assuming that you would miss the opportunity to attend such a gathering. It was silly of me to even believe such a thing!”

Adamina had always been one to believe in happy beginnings and endings as both could grant people hope, and Ada believed that if one kept their hope and their faith, fortunate events would occur. It could honestly be compared to a book, and when one began reading a book there was the hope for a happy ending, and at the end of the tale, there is hope that the characters continue living their happy-ever-after. It all goes without saying that hope was the single most powerful emotion in the universe - it could make or break a person.

However, before she could continue hers and Miss Crouch’s conversation, the person she had least expected to be addressed by suddenly approached her: Mr. August Echelon-Arnost, one of many of her elder sister’s loyal friends. She believed that it was quite rude that he would so suddenly approach her and ignore the presence of her friend (though she realized that the two had yet to be acquainted) when he could have easily approached her at any other time during the ball, but rather than confess as much, her gut told her to smile apologetically towards Miss Crouch, and address the man before her, holding out her hand to him in greeting, “I will most certainly be sure that my sister receives your kind regards - she will appreciate your kindness, I’m sure.” Then, turning her attention back towards her friend, she continued, “Mr. Echelon-Arnost, may I introduce you to a friend of mine, Miss November Crouch?”

Nova supposed she was grateful for the company, when she was alone she had an unfortunate tendency to feel sorry for herself and wish people 'did not avoid her so'. Her lack of pursuit for this company never helped her, she was in a continuous state of hoping people came to her rather than the other way around and while her position in society meant that they ought to pursue her to an extent, she never seemed capable of helping herself in that respect.

Before the conversation with Miss Flamel could progress any further, a young gentleman inserted himself into their presence and spoke of Miss Flamel's sister. Nova felt a little awkward being that she didn't know the man and he had paid her no mind more or less, not that she felt that was anything out of the ordinary.

Adamina endeavored to introduce them, however, and feeling a little caught out having not expected a conversation with either party five minutes earlier, she forced a dainty curtsy toward this Mr. Echelon-Arnost. "It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Sir." She spoke softly though not shyly, she might be quiet and withdrawn but she was not, strictly speaking, shy. "Are you enjoying the ball, Sir?" she asked politely, not really sure how long the man intended to remain there at this point but felt she ought to at least come across personable and polite.

It occurred to August that he probably should have waited until Adamina was alone - he just didn't trust his ability to find her again, and August very much wanted to ensure that Theodora knew they were still friends. Sure, now that he was out of school most of August's close friends were suffragettes or males, but Theodora had been a good friend of his in school and he was reluctant to let relationships fall by the wayside.

"The pleasure is all mine,"* August said with a bow of his head, seeing as his injury stopped him from actually bowing. The Crouches were, August knew, well-respected, well-off, and pureblooded. "The ball is lovely," August said, managing to keep himself from sounding sarcastic, "The wings on my shoes are throwing me off a bit, however." He glanced at them. "Yourselves?"

August wasn't sure if he ought to feel trapped or not yet.

*august is trying to be ~gentlemanly~ but if i'm fucking it up lmk

Ada’s light-green eyes flitted between her elder sister’s loyal friend and her own lovely friend, believing the two of them to appear quite beautiful together. With his handsomeness and charm and November’s soft spokenness and ethereal beauty, they appeared to be quite the pair (not to mention that they both hailed from highly respected families, and their union would bring both parties much joy), and Ada was nearly contemplating the idea of encouraging their relationship. At the thought of matchmaking, Ada’s eyes lit up and her back arched a little taller. It had been so long since she had last attempted to assist others in seeking out their perfect match, and though she was aware that perhaps matchmaking was a bit of a risky business, she had to admit that the feeling of success after she had made a correct assumption always caused her to believe that she was doing a good deed.

“I am splendid!,” Ada happily declared before motioning to November, “Though I must confess that my joy stems from being in Miss Crouch’s presence - I find her company quite lovely and refreshing.” Let the matchmaking begin, Ada thought to herself as looked between the two.

Nova glanced down at the gentleman's feet at the mention of wings, he was surely Hermes then? Hermes was the messenger of the gods, she wondered if that was any sort of reflection on Mr. Echelon-Arnost himself. She dwelt on that for a moment or so longer before her friend referred to her in such a way that made Nova nearly shoot her a baffled look. What in heaven's name could she possibly mean by referring to her as 'lovely and refreshing'? They had barely spoken to each other before he had arrived, was she perhaps simply making idle small talk? Surely if that were the case she wouldn't have chosen her as a conversation topic?

Not quite sure what Miss Flamel was up to, Nova supposed she ought to say something. "Mr. Echelon-Arnost, would I be correct in thinking that you have come in the guise of Hermes, messenger to the gods, this evening?" She tightened her grip on the little lyre in her hands. She had come as echo though she wasn't sure if there was anything about her costume that really gave away her identity as the mountain nymph, save perhaps for her lyre, or maybe the fact she was very quiet.

Miss Flamel was recommending Miss Crouch quite highly. (It was, even, almost unnerving to him.) August could not help but wonder if the quiet blonde was more talkative once she got to know someone better. He was definitely feeling a tad trapped now but at least they were less boring than his previous conversation partner.

"You would be correct, Miss Crouch," he said with a nod and a smile. August decided not to go into the 'why' of it - he would talk too much, and he was not actually willing to potentially bore the two women. (At least on things that were not his activism. August wondered if Theodora had warned her sister not to get August started on such things; even he knew that he would never shut up, and he very much doubted that Miss Flamel and Miss Crouch would be as willing to listen to him as Lyra had been.)

"I must, however, admit that I am not nearly as well acquainted with the Greek myths as I ought to be - I cannot identify either of your costumes." August had read Greek myths - he had read them when he was young to feel smarter, and then started to genuinely like them - but he was not as familiar with them as he needed to be for situations like these.

Adamina was oblivious to November’s and August’s discomfort as the wheels in her mind continued to turn. She would have ensure that she did not overly interfere with their socialization, but she would speak when directly spoken to and offer encouragement where encouragement was needed. It was just important for her two acquaintances to converse as she could determine whether or not they would be a good match. She had already established that August and November were a beautiful couple in appearance, but it was also essential that the two of them be compatible to be a perfect match, as well.

At the inquiry of which Greek goddess she had attended the ball as, Ada’s light-green orbs swiveled downwards to her white and gold gown. Though she was usually known for her extravagance, her gown for the ball was not particularly extraordinary, but it was simple and elegant - the olive branch crown that was situated in her golden-blond hair was the only indication of which goddess she had chosen to dress up as.

“Well,” Ada said after a moment, “I have come this evening as Eirene, the goddess of peace - the olive branch is a symbolization of peace.” Then turning to November, Adamina examined the young woman’s costume, and attempted to determine which goddess her friend had decided to channel in appearance. She honestly could not properly identify the young woman’s costume, but she receive her answer soon enough it seems.

Nova was pleased she had not guessed wrong but really, there were only so many characters in Greek mythology who wore wings upon their heels. She wasn't surprised, however, that he didn't recognize her own costume. Nova had recognized Adamina's but then she had also searched up on Greek mythology numerous times and the olive branch was a huge clue.

"I am Echo, the mountain nymph, in pursuit of Narcissus," she announced stoically. "There is little mentioned about Echo's appearance to recognize her by so my costume is not particularly easy to tell, unfortunately." She wasn't sure what else to say, she could think of mindless small talk but not everyone appreciated small talk and while she wasn't aware that Miss Flamel was attempting to set her up with Mr. Echelon-Arnost, that didn't stop her from wanting to make a good impression upon him. She wasn't sure if she wanted to make a good impression to all on behalf of her brother's efforts to find her a good marriage or because she preferred to be liked rather than disliked but there it was.

Eirene and Echo, peace and a nymph. Both of the blondes had very interesting costume choices - certainly more original than anything August could have chosen, not that he had put much thought into it.

Maybe he should have. He had known he was coming to this ball since he received the invitation, surely it would not have been difficult to come up with something more obscure - but August liked Hermes, the messenger, and as someone that did not as a rule like Balls he figured he might as well indulge himself.

"Narcissus," August said, for the sake of saying something "The man who fell in love with his own reflection. I always found the tale of him and Echo intriguing - and peace is a very noble goddess to choose. I commend you both." He raised an invisible glass of champagne to them.

Adamina smirked. This conversation was progressing rather well in her opinion, and she was determined to keep it as such. Mr. Echelon-Arnost’s personal intrigue on the background of Miss Crouch’s costume was also a nice touch - it showed that he was at least a little interested in her knowledge, and if being good friends with her elder sister meant anything, it was that he preferred women who were knowledgeable.

“I never understood how one can simply fall in love with their own reflection,” Adamina confessed with a little exasperated shake of her head. She was aware that vanity existed - and it certainly had not surpassed her for she believed herself to be quite attractive when she desired to be - but to possess such a multitude of vanity that would result in falling in love with one’s reflection? How atrociously silly! One can admire a reflection, but loving it would result in said person being considered a bit crazed.

“Miss Crouch’s costume choice was quite clever,” Ada complimented her friend with a smile of encouragement. “I also must admit that the color of her gown compliments her pale complexion rather nicely and brightens up her eyes..” Turning her light-green eyes upon the man, she innocently inquired, “Don’t you agree, Mr. Echelon-Arnost?”

Nova broke a small smile that didn't quite reach her eyes as it probably ought to have done as Mr. Echelon-Arnost remarked upon her mythology choice. She hadn't been sure about attending a ball as a nymph of all things being that they were infamous for promiscuity but Echo had fortunately been one of the more chaste of the species and so Nova hadn't felt as concerned as she might, she didn't care to imagine what the cost to her reputation might have been if she had turned up as some water nymph seduced by Zeus.

So far, Nova had had little inclination of the game Miss Flamel was playing but as she made particular mention of her apparent merits, she knew instantly. What reason Miss Flamel could have by trying to encourage them toward each other, she had no idea, she couldn't think of one thing the girl stood to gain and yet there she was, singing her praises to the fair haired young man Nova had only met ten seconds ago! "Miss Flamel is very generous- too generous," she insisted in a rather feebly.

August raised his eyebrows at Miss Flamel, mostly because the other option was to have a small heart attack now that he was mostly certain she was trying to accomplish... something here. August wasn't quite sure what, but it was something, and he didn't particularly want to be a part of it.

"I must admit that my knowledge in the realm of gown colors is rather weak," August said, "But I do believe that Miss Flamel is right."

He could have gone on but a man from the M.E.C was waving frantically at him. August squinted - "I'm sort of in a conversa-"

"Yes, Yes, I'm sorry, how fascinating - they're arguing Mer/Centaur rights again."

    "In public?"

    "Where else did you think!"

August winced. "I do genuinely regret having to cut this encounter off," he said, "But it appears that my presence is needed. Some other time, yes?"
