There was no doubt in her mind that she had failed.

Today was the dreaded OWLs day, and Ismene Swift had a break for lunch—a break she intended to spend sequestered in the library, pouring over her books. Well, she was trying to, at least: unfortunately, it seemed the weight of being a failure was rather distracting, and so no further charms preparation was being done.

It was not as if she had ever expected to do well on the practical examination for Herbology, but she had not anticipated that the written portion would leave her so flabbergasted! While the subject had long been her least favourite, the Hufflepuff had always hoped to scrape at least an A on all of her exams. True, she was not exactly a genius, and so this might have been a bit of a stretch, but she was not an idiot, and had prepared hard for all of her tests.

And now this.

Exasperated and overwhelmed and simply wishing the day over, the fifth year let out a small sob in the library, pretending she was still focused upon her studies.

Eva was rather glad that this year she didn't have to worry about anything like the OWLs. Last year was bar far her most stressful one and Eva was certain that even her final one wouldn't be able to top that. She always considered herself a good student, but the prospect of receiving grades bellow A had often caused the Russian to stay awake for the biggest part of the night, thinkng that she ought to go and study rather than sleep.

This year it was only good old finals. She would still have to study but she wouldn't have to worry about dreadful courses like Herbology and History of Magic.

She decided to do a small revision in Charms, and because there was a large group of fifth years freaking out (one was even crying) at the Common Room, Eva decided to go to the library instead. Nobody would be freaking out there. At least she hoped so.

She was picking up some books from one of the shelves when she overheard a sob. Eva couldn't help but sigh, but she still turned to see who had produced that sound.

It was Miss Ismene Swift, a girl she vaguelly knew from classes and the likes who was apparently studying Herbology judging by her books. Eva, who had always dreaded that particular course, felt some sympathy for the younger Hufflepuff.

"Miss Ismene Swift." she said. "Are you alright?" She turned her gaze to the girl's books, before she added. "You really should not worry too much about your OWLs. It only makes things worse!"

OOC | I assumed that Eva and Issy would at least vaguelly know each other because of professor parents?

Her face reddened, burned. It was bad enough that she should have been overheard and remarked upon, but by Eva Sleptova, no less! While she was hardly the pinnacle in terms of the young ladies housed in the castle—she could not, for example, be seen to associate with the pureblooded girls—hers was as high a position as Ismene herself might hope to obtain someday, and so not exactly someone Issie wanted to catch her in disarray.

She had not expected the girl to speak so kindly to her, and it was all she could do to stop from crying further. “I am not worried, Miss Sleptova, at least not about the examinations I have yet to take—but oh, I am quite certain to have failed my Herbology OWL!” How could she look her father—or worse still, her mother—in the eye when such a mar appeared on her OWL transcript in the coming summer? Cassandra was a wife, settled. And now Ismene herself was a failure.

Self-consciously, the Hufflepuff fumbled for her handkerchief before swiping (she hoped) inconspicuously at her nose with it.

Ah, Herbology. The worse class there is. Eva was so glad that she no longer had to take it. She certainly didn't miss having to clean all that dirt from her nails and clothes after every lesson. Not to mention that Professor Prince was one of the most unpleasant professors at Hogwarts! Even if Herbology's classes weren't such a mess, just the man's attitude could make you hate the class.

Eva saw no reason why Ismene should worry about her Herbology OWL. It was a useless class, unless you wanted to become a healer or a mediwitch. She could not just call Herbology a useless class in front of the Hufflepuff, that would be rude. What would the Hufflepuff (and her potentially her friends and parents) think of Eva if she spoke about her classes so carelessly?

"I am sure that you do not need to worry!" Eva said, picking her words carefully. "I bet that you will excell in all of your other classes, so Herbology could be overlooked! I did not do exceptionally at my Herbology OWLs either, but I cannot say that I was particularly sadenned. A bad score can be disheartening, but at least you know that you no longer have to worry about a class that you do not enjoy!"

While the Slytherin’s words were somewhat encouraging, Ismene was not entirely reassured. Miss Sleptova was beautiful and wealthy; grades could be overlooked if need be. Ismene, however, needed all the advantages she could get if she wanted to move up in the world, and while men did not necessarily look for brains in a wife, a proper young lady did not fail her OWLs!

“You are very kind, Miss Sleptova, but I cannot help but fret—if nothing else, I must worry about what my mother has to say!” That, the Hufflepuff hoped, would resonate: since Letitia Swift had taken over the position of etiquette instructor at the school, the entire castle knew her stern ways. Professor Sleptov, by comparison, was not half so frightening!

Well, Eva had to admit, if her mother was Letitia Swift she would probably be worried about her OWLs too. Her father was not too thrilled to learn about her failing her OWLs, but he didn't want to disown her or marry her off to a 70-year-old either. Professor Swift probably wouldn't do that either, but Eva would not be surprised if she heard that Miss Swift spent her entire summer locked at home because of a P in Herbology.

"I am sure that your mother will understand that you cannot be perfect in all classes!" Eva said with a reassuring smile. And Herbology was a stupid and gross class. Unless you were planning to become a healer or a mediwizard, you didn't really need to take it in a NEWT level. "Besides, I am certain that you will get Os and Es in so many other classes that Professor Swift will not even notice a bad grade at Herbology. Which I doubt that will be anything lower than A. Sure, Professor Prince requires an E, but I promise you that you will not miss Herbology in your Sixth year."

Letitia Swift, understand a lack of perfection? That seemed like a stretch, even to the often-whimsical Ismene. It was not that her mother was an unkind one, but her job was to instill flawless decorum in her students, so it was only natural this would be transferred upon her daughters as well. With Cassandra now married and out of the house, too, Ismene was often her mother’s only outlet for such instruction—outside of the classroom, of course. Myles, the Hufflepuff thought, was lucky that he had little enough to do with their mother, though she supposed being their father’s son and not playing quidditch came with its own host of difficulties.

“You are very kind, Miss Sleptova,” she thanked the Slytehrin graciously, before adding something of a white lie, “and I am sure you are right—mother shan’t mind half as much as she worries I will. I just don’t like to disappoint her, that is all.” Particularly when her future was no longer held safe by a betrothal.

Eva could never understand why someone would worry so much about his classes. It was not like she didn't pay attention to her education, because she did, but Eva thought that there were more important things in life than school. Once she graduated, it would be her good social skills and her looks that would help her in life, not information on trolls and ugly, smelly plants. She wouldn't seek employment at the Ministry or the hospital to need such knowledge. And the Hufflepuff surely wouldn't.

"Which classes do you think of keeping in your next two years, Miss Swift?" Eva asked, thinking that changing the topic a little bit away from Herbology would help the younger girl a bit.

Not herbology, the badger thought churlishly.

That much was foolish, for it was not as if Ismene had ever expected to continue on in the course she so loathed. Frankly, if she could have gotten away with only Music and Etiquette, the fifth year thought she would have done so quite gratefully. Her mother, she knew, planned to leave the school after this year, and Mr. Fitzgerald was a wonderful teacher. She might even return to art, based on what she had heard of Miss Pearson, and then perhaps continue forward with History, that she might remain close to dear Professor Rutledge.

But that was not an option. Issie was quite aware she needed no fewer than three NEWT classes—unfortunately the feminine courses she so preferred did not qualify—in order to remain at school, and as her father had yet to leave her with a new marriage prospect, leaving after this year did not strike her as the most prudent of options. “History most certainly,” she offered the Slytherin. While she had not done brilliantly, she was certain she had passed, and did not think that the Ravenclaw head required much more than that. “And perhaps charms and astronomy. I might keep Muggle Studies as well as it is quite easy, but that is only if I do not score well enough for Transfiguration.” She was unsure what Professor Beckett required.

It was a relief to focus on her successes instead of her failings, Issie realized. “What are your intentions, Miss Selptova?” Sleptova. Russians were quite silly—but also rather interesting—with their naming practices, she thought.
