A few months ago, you asked for my hand in marriage and I, not realizing at the time what a disastrous ruin I had become, accepted. We then spent some rather intimate time together, that I wish I could take back for fear of scandal ruining your good name.
Mr. Aesalon, I do hope you are capable of seeing where I am coming from. I am a self-destructing dynamite and I'm trying to bring as few down besides me as I can. You are beautiful, explosive - yes, but so am I, and I want you no other way, intelligent, and probably not of sound mind at the moment. I beg you to please accept my affections, because no one in this blasted town deserves it more than you do.
Merlin, I am keeping this ring because I don't trust you to not do something stupid like try to destroy it if I send it back. But it is rightfully yours and will only be worn by you for as long as my heart beats. There will be no scandal because I want no one else but you, Josephine! And even if there is, you know how much I care about my social standing or reputation or whatever they call it nowadays! If you believe that you are going to force me into bearing your ring you are horrendously misinformed. I'm doing this for you. I want better for you. I do not want you to have to be constantly pushing me back up for the rest of my life. You deserve a better wife than that, okay? You deserve to be able to come home from work and not worry about your wife drinking herself into a stupor again. And god forbid we ever had children? I'd kill them and wouldn't even realize it.
