June 15th
Mirella supposed she looked nice enough, even if her gown was from the previous season. There was little doubt in her mind that Aunt Katherina would have provided something newer for her, but in spite of her changed circumstances, Mira was still far too proud to ask it. It was enough, she thought, that her aunt was taking her—and her siblings—to the ball at all.

Her siblings. This would be the first time Mirella saw either Sebastian or Priscilla since they had departed for school the previous September, and she for Hogsmeade in October. Oh, she had kept in touch with both, of course, but she was anxious to see them again. Though all had suffered their father’s idiocy, each had come out decidedly different for it. Mirella’s engagement had had an unfortunate end, and she was now reduced to the position of governess. It was a position she had every intention of leaving as soon as she found a suitable husband, but it was a challenge that no Lestrange should have faced. For Sebastian, it meant that the title of ‘heir’ no longer held any meaning, and that he must work four, five, six times as hard if he ever hoped to have a wife of worth. Gone were any chances of his marrying before thirty. Priscilla, it seemed, had suffered the least: still in school, little of her daily routine had changed. It would, however, be a harsh reality for her when she finally made her debut.

Punctually, she apparated to the Selwyn doorstep, rapping thrice upon the door before quickly being admitted and shown to the parlour. It had been Auntie’s idea that she should come over extra-early, as she had not seen her siblings since their arrival in Hogsmeade earlier that month—business was a side-effect of Mira’s occupation. She was not waiting long before Sebastian and Priscilla arrived, and she rose to warmly embrace her brother and disdainfully eye the sister she had never been overly fond of.

Priscilla had mixed feelings about seeing her sister again. She hadn't exactly missed her during that school year. She was far too occupied with the fact that she had to be surrounded by a bunch of poor people because her parents could not afford a better room for her. Her friends had become colder, or at least it seemed that way to Cilla. Her life was ruined.

She didn't want to return back to Italy, really. She honestly wanted those three months to never end. Since she had arrived at Aunt Katherina's, Cilla felt like her life had gone back to normal. The normal she was used to until only a year ago. Aunt Katherina had given her one of the best rooms in her house and she had even given her one simple but fashionable dress for her to wear for the Quidditch ball.

Priscilla had to admit. She honetly hoped that she would catch the eye of someone tonight. Perhaps someone old, or someone widowed would be interested in her. Widowers didn't need rich or pretty wives, right? Priscilla certainly didn't need an attractive or young husband. She just wanted her life to go back to normal.

"Mirella." Priscilla said softly, with a forced but seemingly sincere smile on her lips. "You look lovely tonight."

The reunion with Priscilla had been easier than he'd imagined, but then she was the younger sister and she had yet to feel the burdens that he and Mirella had. He had only been out of school for a scarce few weeks but already he could feel the weight of expectation coming down upon him without the family fortune as a buffer. He had never expected to work, had never been trained for such a thing and he knew that he had only Lucius to thank that he hadn't ended up in service as Mirella had. Although at least hers was a genteel sort of service. If it had come to it he supposed he could have tutored languages but it would hardly have afforded him much opportunity to get on in the world and getting on was all he could hope for now.

He worried for Priscilla though. Aunt Katherina had been very kind to them and allowed Cilla the luxuries that she was used to – not that he had been denied! – but it troubled him to think that such treatment would never give his sister the perspective she needed to be prepared for when she left the carefully maintained world of school. Perhaps he should speak with Mirella about it soon? It would do him no good to dwell upon his worries and thus far she had done well considering so it stood to reason that she would have some sense on the matter.

For now he embraced her with all the brotherly affection he possessed for the loved older sister he had not seen in so very long. Smiling he took a step back and looked between his sister.

"She always does Cilla and I'm pleased to see that has not changed in the slightest!"

Mira was never entirely certain if her sister was sincere—and so typically assumed that she was not. To an extent, the young woman envied the closeness of some other pairs in their family (for all her peculiarities, Aunt Mariana seemed to be quite close to Aunt Olivia, and Aunt Katherina seemed to be on good terms with the entire family), knowing that, where Priscilla was concerned, that would never be an outcome for her. Mirella considered her sister to be all the ambition of a Lestrange with little of the intelligence to back it up—a solid wife for a traditional pureblood, but otherwise more or less useless. “As do you, Sister; our aunt’s charity has not let you down, I see.” From a young age she had mastered the barb-within-a-compliment.

With her brother, however, sincerity came more easily. They were not overly close, and as a youngster she had envied his position in the family immensely, but she genuinely liked Sebastian where she did not her sister. He had, she thought, a decent head upon his shoulders, and appreciated the value of their family.

“You’re too kind, Sebastian,” she replied gently. “Tell me, how have you both settled into Hogsmeade? It is quite a change, is it not?” Even were the general culture no different, that lack of a place to call their own surely proved a drastic change to what the trio was used to.

Sebastian understood Mirella’s words all too well. Change was precisely the word for it and he had scarcely been in Hogsmeade an hour before he had begun to long for the grace of his former Italian surroundings and the people there that deported themselves with nought but dignity and beauty. Hogsmade wasn’t terrible he supposed, and he had often heard his father speaking of the happy times he had spent in the then much smaller village during his schooldays and it was quite as charming as the stories had told, but there was something distinctly wrong with the place that no amount of people of their sort could compensate for. It wasn’t home.

“Change indeed, but…” he struggled for the words for a moment, looking towards Priscilla but receiving no inspiration from his younger sister. “But perhaps it’s not the worst possible change? At least here, with Aunt Katherina’s generosity, we are all together.”

It was certainly a sentiment he felt even if it was not one he felt he ought to be experiencing. A man in his position – bright and ambitious as Sebastian knew himself to be, albeit with reduced circumstances – should be striving towards the future with every fibre of his being and yet Sebastian found an enormous comfort in the presence of his sisters. They were a link to a once happy past and seeing them together again he felt as though he was able to recall some of that easy happiness.

Priscilla was definitely not as proud as she could or should be. She liked luxury too much to deny it in favour of her pride. Her sister's comment did made her feel sligthly uncomfortable, but then she figured that looking pretty would help her a lot more than being proud. Wealthy men liked pretty women, not proud ones.

"Oh, I love Hogsmeade so far." Prsicilla replied. And how could she not? It was the only thing that reminded her of her past. Here she was still wealthy, somehow. She lived in a large house and she wore beautiful dresses like she used to do so in the past. " I definitely wish I could stay..."

Not as a governess, of course. No, if that was the case, then she would rather never leave school. All Priscilla wanted was to find someone wealthy (and hopefully smarter than her father) and then never worry about money again. She didn't want to be a middle class governess. She wanted to be a rich wife. That was the life she was preparing herself for years and she didn't want anything different than that in her future.
