I just had an interesting idea that could be used for another networking section, Classifieds.

It would be a section where people could post characters/NPC relatives that are looking for work and others could respond (either via the page, or via PM) to the section with either employment ideas/suggestions/actual employment.

EXAMPLE: I have Margaret Blackwood (35, single mother of child aged 5 "widow") who is educated and received her NEWTS at Hogwarts, married and after being "widowed" worked as a wetnurse which she can no longer do. She is in-need of an employer so I'd post something like this:

Margaret Blackwood (35), Halfblood, is searching for an: Employer who is willing to employ an educated "widowed" single mother. No position specified. Intention to temporarily NPC for Fanny.

[IN OTHER NEWS: the above is true. if you want to employ Margaret please PM]

We have the Community Bulletin which would work for that. I think it could do with a little more traffic personally... *ponders*

My issue with using this sort of thing for the community bulletin is the fact that the Community Bulletin is IC and I don't think it'd be the right place.I can see people posting jobs they want people employed in, but what about for people who want to be employed. It's rather forward to do it that way, (or maybe out of character), and like I said I'd like to see Margaret employed as an NPC for connections for Fanny etc, so it... um... doesn't seem the right place exactly? I think perhaps something OOC for that purpose would be best. Idk. I'll post my classifieds there if you think...

What would make it feel more in-character for you, Ari? Maybe if there was a thread where people could post replies looking for work? Something along the lines of "Job Finder Specialist-- OWL your specifications to Mr. Eric Southhampton, and Mr. Southhamptom will scour available jobs to fill your needs. Nominal fee, 10 knuts per job recommended."

I know my characters would be more likely to use an existing service than to IC-ly post something themselves looking for work (cause that looks desperate), but OOC both accomplish the same thing.

In Jane Eyre when Jane's leaving her teaching position at her school to become a governess, she 'advertises' which meant she put an ad in the paper and secured her job that way but that was noted by a couple people as being bold and it was often done. The normal channel for a woman to gain work back then, I believe was through recommendations. Your current employer would know of other families seeking a housekeeper or a governess or whatever and would write a recommendation (if they felt that employee deserved it) and get work for them that way because the usual reason for losing a job was a lack of needing that member of staff and a good employer would be kind enough to find new employment for them. Otherwise I'd think they would look out for placements in the paper.

I'd have to check it out but there might have been agencies like the one in Nanny McPhee if you've seen that movie. A lot of jobs were also secured through family connections for example in Larkrise to Candleford - Laura finds employment with her mother's wealthier cousin who runs a Post Office and yeah. I recommend watching the tv adaptation x)

Miranda'd give Margaret a recommendation, so you can use that as a point for figuring things out.
