Mrs. Maud Rutledge "dies" after giving birth and wakes at her own funeral

On Sunday Mrs. Maud Rutledge gave birth to a son; however, what should have been a joyous occasion was marred by the apparent death of the new mother.

Robert Anthony William Rutledge II was born in the afternoon of July 22, and while his mother was weak from the trials of birth she survived the night. The next morning the family's employee, Miss Sarah Penrose, went to bring Mrs. Rutledge breakfast and was unable to wake her. A healer was sent for and after Mrs. Rutledge was examined she was pronounced dead.

"We'd already engaged Betty, thankfully — that would be Betty Pierce, the wet nurse — and so thankfully little Master Robbie didn't suffer at all over this," Miss Penrose said. "It's such a shame, after last time. I wasn't there, of course, when Mrs. Alice passed. They had a muggle girl before me, but I've been with the family since little Miss Jane was born. Still, so much tragedy for one man — it was horrible to think that he had lost another wife."

Professor William Rutledge (whose first _____________________________________________________________
name is apparently Robert!) did as was expected — he set the date for a funeral and arranged for a viewing in the parlor. The "corpse" was cleaned and dressed and visited by mourners for two days; then on July 25 the casket holding the body was moved to Asphodel Cemetery for the funeral.

Thankfully for Mrs. Rutledge, the funeral was an open casket affair. As a mourner looked into the casket to pay her respects, Mrs. Rutledge opened her eyes!

"It was quite startling," the mourner, Mrs. Estelle Durrington, said. "I knew Professor Rutledge from school and came to pay respects to his wife. Poor man, I thought, losing his second wife in the same way as his first! Then her eyes sort of fluttered, then opened, and she looked at me, right at me, when she was supposed to be dead! I screamed, of course, and nearly fainted, and everyone ran up to see what was the matter. Lucky, really — imagine if she had not woken up until after she was in the ground!"

Mrs. Rutledge was rushed to the hospital immediately and is expected to return home sometime next week.
