While Rosie was not really for the changes that had precipitated the quidditch tryouts that she was currently attending, she did not see any reason to let that keep her from coming out to support Leo. He was a good friend, and even though she was a Slytherin she had family in Gryffindor as well. So here she was, sitting in the stands and watching as boys tried out for the spots that girls had been forced to vacate on the Gryffindor quidditch team.

The whole thing was devistating, really. Because a few girls couldn't be trusted, now none of them were being trusted. Even the prefects schedules had been rearranged so that a boy and a girl were never on duty together. Rosie was particularly annoyed by that, as she had enjoyed spending quiet evenings patrolling with friends of both genders previously -- something that had been allowed because they were still considered children, if exceptionally responsible children. Now thanks to the actions of some very irresponsible students (Nicolette Potter and Nola Haskett specifically), the students being watched like foolish adults who could not be trusted to make intelligent decisions. Frankly, Rosie had enough of that just as a result of being female and did not appreciate the fact that her freedoms had been limited.

Still, if she was going to be treated like an adult, she was going to act like an adult. She was going to pretend not to be effected by the decrees that had been passed to control the young women of Hogwarts, carry a parasol and a fan in her gloved hands, and wear a hat atop her carefully coiffed hair. Even her khaki and red dress was mature and sophisticated, with barely any skin showing at her neck and barely a glimpse of wrist between sleeve and glove. There was a particularly spectacular play; instead of leaping to her feat, Rosie clapped politely. If enough of the students behaved this way, then the faculty would be forced to see that the restrictions weren't necessary. This was the only way to be free of them.

Ellory was against the Quidditch ban towards the girls. It was just not fair that because of some girls all of them lost their position in the Quidditch Team. Many friends of Ellory played in the team and she felt so sorry for them. Nicolette Potter was a Slytherin, so in Ellory's opinion it was right that only Slytherins had to get a detention and not all of the houses. Gryffindor, for Ellory's big surprise stayed away from the whole scandal, but they still got detentions if they got caught with boys. Ellory hated that new system, she didn't wanted to attend the stupid ettiquette lessons and she concidered unfair the fact that she couldn't talk freely with some friends of the opposite gender. Not that stopped Ellory from talking with boys, she just had to be more careful for her and their safety, even if she felt that these new rules were a little more strict for girls than boys.

Today were Gryffindor's try-outs and she surely felt sorry for Gryffindor's Team. How could they find good Quidditch players in a day? Quidditch needed practise and with the next Quidditch Match being so close they wouldn't be able to train untill then. Ellory still felt happy that they didn't banned Quidditch at all. She was never a big fan of Quidditch, even if she shared the love for sports and particularly athletic nature with her other siblings. Ellory preferred simple flights with her broomstick, even if she couldn't do that here in Hogwarts without getting a detention. Her mother didn't let her fly during the summer either, but sometimes she let her just for a couple of hours if she was with Regan.

Unchaperoned, Ellory approached the Quidditch Pitch with a huge smile on her lips, trying to look happy despite the annoyance she felt inside her. Girls didn't deserved that and all those boys who had gathered hoping they could replace them would never be as good as the previous female players. Surely, some of them were probably good at Quidditch because they played during the summer, but the haven't trained enough.

A familiar blonde girl was sitting not too away from Ellory and the Gryffindor happily smiled and run towards her. Ellory couldn't understand her sister sometimes. She couldn't understand why Rose was always acting like a sheep, following the rules blindly. She was sometimes annoyed about the fact that Rosie always followed the rules and never showed her own, true opinion. Sure, prefects were supposed to do that, but Ellory would appreciate more Rosaling if she was more... rebellious.

" Rosie!" Ellory exclaimed happily, sitting beside her sister and realising she wasn't wearing a hat. Her hair wasn't even proper actually. She had tied it with a ribbon in a loose ponytail.

The new rules were a bit bittersweet for Ben, even though he knew for most they were simply bitter. It had always been his opinion that there were two many girls playing Quidditch at Hogwarts, but he'd sort of grown accustomed to it at this point. The fact that there were no longer girls on the teams didn't affect him directly, as none of his teammates, at least this year, were female, but as far as he knew Ravenclaw was the only team that didn't need to be holding new try-outs. That certain boded well for Ben and his team come Quidditch season, but at the same time, he had friends on opposing teams, and he wasn't particularly looking forward to beating them under these conditions. In a fair match with trained players, yes, of course, he was a good winner or loser. He just loved the game, so while winning was a wonderful bonus and a definite ego boost, he knew it wouldn't mean half as much if the team he was playing against was half good players and half incompetant, untrained losers.

Most of the Ravenclaw Quidditch team was attending the try-outs for the other houses' teams, since they were such public events, and no sportsman would pass up the opportunity to scope out the competition. Although they were fairly sure that the new recruits wouldn't be as good, or certainly as well trained, as the girls they were replacing, there was always the chance some first year prodigy who hadn't even known how to fly by the first try-out dates would show up now and sweep the skies with his genius and skill. It was unlikely, but just in case, the Ravenclaws needed to know what they were up against. Unknown variables on the opposing team drove Ben crazy. Gryffindor was especially of interest to him; two of his good friends were on the Gryffindor team, Leo and Kelvin, so these tryouts, more than the others, were something he couldn't possibly miss. He wanted to be able to see the new recruits play so that if he was caught in a conversation with the two later regarding the pros and cons of the players, he'd be able to have something of a valid opinion.

He'd heard whispers that the try-outs would be protested by the Quidditch playing girls, or that they would otherwise do something that proved how unladylike they were--though this would hardly help their cause, in his opinion, some girls were latching onto the invitation the paper had given for outsiders to come and see what perfect ladies were being taught in Hogwarts. If something like that did happen, it would probably happen here, since Gryffindor try-outs were first. Reaching the top of the stands, however, Ben didn't see any protestors--at least, not yet. What he did see was a few girls, dressed quite as they always were, watching expectantly for the try-outs to begin. Approaching a girl he knew--Rosalind Pendergast, who mostly associated with Leo but was familiar with the rest of their group as well--he bowed his head slightly and greeted her and her sister, who was seated next to her. "Ladies," he said, thinking that any other address would either sound silly or overly formal, considering that they both had the same last name and it was hardly the sort of situation that required the use of everyone's full names. "May I join you?"

Glancing down towards the field to make sure that he hadn't missed the beginning of the try-outs, Ben scanned the line of expectant students grasping their broomsticks. Some he could have predicted, some were surprises. Some were in his class, and he could remember from flight class whether they'd been any good with a broom. One of the boys near the front of the line hadn't been able to get more than ten feet off the ground without becoming naseous... but then, maybe he'd gotten much better in the past three years. "I hope they find some talent," he said honestly, confident that even if they did they'd still not pose much of a threat until later in the season when they could have more practice as a team under their belt. "For Leo and Kelvin's sakes, really."

Rosie smiled at her younger sister, reaching up to grasp her hand briefly in greeting. "Ellory! Is there anyone that you're particularly wanting to make the team?"

The answer was probably a vehement no, but Rosie really was doing her best to be absolutely proper. Her sister, on the other hand ... Ellory wore no hat, and her hair tied back with no decorum. At least she was wearing gloves.

In truth, Rosie was glad Ellory was not one of the girls who had been removed from the team; there would be no living with her if she had been. Merry was an absolute terror lately.

They were joined by a Ravenclaw quidditch player then -- a chaser, if Rosie remembered correctly. "Hello, Mr. Taylor. Please, do take a seat."

It was only polite, after all, and since they were in a group they were within the new restrictions. Besides, Mr. Taylor seemed to be an agreeable sort. His presence might even prove to be enjoyable, despite the fact that Rosie was now suspicious of any male who sought her company. Was Mr. Taylor (a wealthier member of the middle class, but still not of her social class) perhaps her secret admirer? Certainly not, or he would not be approaching her like this.

"I would certainly hate to see any of the teams suffer too badly because of the bad behavior of one player." Nicolette Potter had been the only girl mentioned in the paper to also be on the quidditch team, and so the blame for this particular restriction could be completely laid at her feet. "I know that Mr. Trealawney" -- she almost called him Leo, out of habit -- "and my brother both train hard, and I would hate to see their hard work be for naught because they lost some players."

Nobody could ever replace her friend Valerie. She was a strong player, she was a perfect player. She did not deserved to lose her position and get replaced by someone who couldn't even play Quidditch. All those boys would need a lot of practise in order to reach perfection in the Quidditch Pitch. Gryffindor luckily didn't had a lot of female players so they didn't had to worry too much about the new rules. Ravenclaw had no female players, which was perfect because they wouldn't even had to change anything in their trainings. It was almost unfair, the rules did not even affect Ravenclaw and Ellory wouldn't be shocked if they won the Quidditch Cup in the end of the year. Slytherin wouldn't win because most of their players were girls. Although some of them were nasty, Ellory still helpt sorry for them. " No, I don't think so." Ellory replied. She couldn't even remember any boy who could replace Valerie. Probably Grip, but if he really wanted to join the team he would be the captain by now.

A boy called Ben Taylor joined them and Ellory let her sister do all the greetings. Ellory was horrible when it came to ettiquette and following it. She just smiled politely to the boy.

The quick change of the subject made Ellory angry. She couldn't stand that because of some girl all the other girls had to pay. It was all Nicolette Potter's fault but it didn't even mattered for her. Her brother was the Minister, she didn't had to fear a bad marriage. " She must be ashamed that girls lost her positions! Her house will most likely lose the Cup this year because of her stupidity!" Ellory agreed with her sister. Her words were surely not appropriate. Calling someone stupid was surely not appropriate, but other students were giving Nicolette worse nicknames. " People say that Max will never find as good beaters as Merrythought and Oscarinne." Ellory continued, calling her dear friend by his nickname. He was already busy training the team and now he had to teach some beginners how to play. It was just unfair!

Ben took the older girl's invitation to sit, all the while scrutinizing the line of players waiting for the try-outs to begin. Some were stretching, some were just fidgeting nervously. Ben tried to remember how he'd felt when he was going through try-outs, back in the beginning of his second year, but it seemed like practically a lifetime since then, even though it had really only been two years. He also couldn't help but frown at their implication of Nicolette Potter; he'd never spoken with her, really, and he certainly didn't know anything at all of her personal life, but she had been a rather good seeker, and he had a sort of respect for her in that regard, even if he disagreed with girls playing Quidditch as a matter of principle. She'd also started out as a Chaser, which had to earn her points in his book.

Still, he couldn't deny anything that the Pendergast girls said; it was largely her fault that the rest of the girls had been banned from playing Quidditch, at least as far as he understood it. "Yes," he agreed, "I'm afraid both of your house teams are hurting, but especially Slytherin. The best Beaters usually work as a team... losing both of them is a major setback. Even if they find two people who have good skills, individually, it will be rather hard to get them trained together in time for the first game. And, despite everything that's happened," he admitted, "Miss Potter is... was... a rather skilled Seeker. I'm sure they'll have quite a time finding a replacement for her."

Not that Gryffindor wouldn't have quite a task in the imminent try-outs as well. The Captain appeared below, followed by the rest of the team, who might have been present to participate in the try-outs or might have just been there to watch. It was even possible, he supposed, that there would be some sort of discussion on whom to admit onto the team; it would certainly bolster morale since they needed to make so many decisions so late in the game. "They're starting," he said, his eagerness showing through. "I wonder which position they'll do first?" The nauseous-looking boy at the front of the line was looking more questionable by the minute; Ben almost felt like taking a bet on how far he'd get off the ground before he either injured himself or made himself sick, but felt that sort of conversation was probably too crass for the ladies.

"I am sure that she feels an appropriate measure of remorse," Rosalind said tactfully. The words tasted like a lie; the prefect had seen no indication that the seventh year felt any sort of pangs of conscience, nor a thought that penance might be in order. Nicolette Potter was, in her own mind, entitled to do whatever she wanted with no consequences.

Maybe she would end up pregnant and have to frantically try to cover up the scandal. Not that Miss Potter would probably care, seeing as she couldn't be bothered to do anything about claims that she was stumbling drunk through the street to see some man.

"I agree that Merry and Oscar will be difficult to replace," she sighed, silently certain that her House would lose dismally this year. It was all Nicky Potter's fault, not that the girl seemed to have any desire to ever take any sort of responsibility for her actions. "They had a special sort of synergy, and I doubt that anyone will be able to recreate it -- in time or not!"

She did not care about Miss Potter and her seeking prowess; there was always someone who could replace her.

The restart of the action caught her attention briefly, but she shrugged lightly at Mr. Taylor's question. "They warmed up everybody earlier, and ran some drills, so there's no telling." A group of smaller players took off, and so Rosalind suspected that it was the seekers; however, it could just be younger players hoping to get a position on the team now that many of the older and more established players had been removed due to the ban.

Really, Rosalind didn't care that much. She was more interested in appearances.

Although Ellory didn't play Quidditch herself, both of her older brothers were playing. Regan was a professional player and Hugo was the captain of Gryffindor's team. Ellory knew some of the basics of the sport and she knew that the beaters had to work well together. They had to work in harmony, in order to succeed. Ellory was sure she would never be a good beater, she wasn't an especially patient person and she was too weak to hit the bludger. Ellory was a perfect seeker, she had a petite frame and she was fast. But unlike the rest of her siblings, she was not especially interested in that sport.

" Miss Potter was indeed quite skilled." Ellory agreed. Not that she concidered her position a difficult one. Seekers just had to fly around searching for the little, golden ball.

If Ben had been paying attention, he might have noticed the difference in tone between the two sisters as they spoke of Miss Potter; they were both clearly against her, as they'd demonstrated earlier, but Rosalind seemed more the type to sneer with some cool disdain--her remarks were tactful but dismissive, while Ellory's were more frank, but also naive. Just a moment ago she'd been flustered with her intense dislike of Nicolette; now, apparently swayed by Ben's single-sentence argument, she was agreeing and almost even supporting the former seeker. Ben, however, was far too enraptured by the group that had just taken off to pay much more than passing attention to the conversation of the girls.

Several snitches were released, while those trying out for the team hovered in a small group, heads turning eagerly to try and track the progress of the Snitches, a nearly impossible task. The captain was saying something to the recruits, while was agitating some--every moment he spoke, the snitches became harder to find quickly. Finally, he flew over to the corner of the Pitch, which was apparently their signal to start going.

Results were varied. Some flew quite well and took off immediately after a Snitch, or at least where they thought it had gone. Some were clearly zealous, but their flights were lurchy when they tried to accelerate too fast. Most were just fine--the whole point of being a seeker was to be fast, dexteritous, and evasive... which sort of boiled down to fly really damn well. One poor, misguided soul hadn't moved from the center and was looking about in what appeared from the stands to be a state of panic. He scooted forward a few feet, still glancing around wildly, then apparently caught sight of something and tried to take off after it, but became increasingly unsure about his broom work and ended up gliding down to the ground, apparently feeling the need to throw in the towel.

"One down," Ben commented, pointing the boy out to the girls. "And it looks like one catch, so far," he added, as another boy sailed smoothly to the ground, one fist raised. The only reason to be looking so smug would be if he'd managed to catch one, so that was surely what was in his hand. The captain didn't call off the other players, though, so apparently they were waiting for more than one to be caught--wise. They didn't want to choose a seeker because the boy who'd caught it fastest was lucky, they needed to check the flying skill of everyone involved. He could see on the sidelines some of the current players watching attentatively, as if taking mental notes on the potential seekers.

"Do you know any of the boys trying out?" he said, aware that he was being a poor conversationalist. Hopefully the Pendergast sisters wouldn't hold it against him too much.

Rosalind feigned interest in the seekers trying out; most of them were so clumsy that it was a wonder that they did not run into each other. This was not going to be a good season for any of the teams except perhaps Ravenclaw.

"I don't," Rose admitted in response to Mr. Taylor's question. "However, Mr. Trelawney is a friend of mine, and our brother Hugo is the captain for Gryffindor. I thought I might give them a little moral support, seeing as they have to replace several key players." They had lost one of two beaters, which in some ways was worse than losing the whole of a beater team. Instead of finding two people who worked together well, they had to find a boy who would actually replace Miss Valerie Gilmore and work seamlessly with Mr. Beckett. It would not be easy to do.

"What about you, Mr. Taylor?" she asked politely. "Do you have any friends among those trying out?"

Ellory watched nonchalantly as the small team of boys started flying around the Quidditch Pitch. She had almost spotted a snitch in the sky, untill it quickly disappeared and she could never spot it again. Ellory soon got bored of searching for the snitch, so she turned her eyes to the ground instead. A petite boy was making a huge effort to levitate with his broomstick, but apparently, flying was not his forte. Or he was really anxious about the trying outs, so the broomstick refused to obbey him. Ellory had heard that broomsticks could sense if one was a good flyer or not.

" That brunette boy sits in front of me in Ghoul Studies!" Ellory noted happily, excited that she knew of the boys who wanted to try out. Then, she realised that she was pointing at him, so she quickly took her hand down, feeling lucky that her mother wasn't around. This would surely cause her a detention.

When Rosie asked the boy a quiestion, Ellory turned her eyes towards him, also waiting for his response.

supporting the enemy
"I know most of them, at least passingly," he said with a nod. "From classes, clubs, things like that. Those three are in my year," he said, gesturing vaguely towards a group of boys still waiting on the ground. For the most part the seeker try-outs were younger, since it was the position where you could get away with being small and quick as opposed to bulky and muscular. Beaters were generally the most muscular, with Chasers and Keepers tied after that--they still needed to have some throwing power with the Quaffle, which was rather large and awkward compared to the balls used for other sports, but they didn't spend the entire game batting very agressive balls at people. Seekers didn't have to handle any ball except the Snitch, and that was hardly something that required any amount of strength. Just speed.

"There are only two down there I might consider friends," he added, "I mean, that I actually talk with on a regular basis. One's going to beater, one for keeper," he said. A few more had drifted down, snitches in hand; apparently they had all been caught, because the rest were called back. Ben was impressed; they'd secured the snitches fairly quickly. He wondered if they'd been somehow tampered with to be more easily catchable, just to move the try-outs along at a reasonable pace. Either that, or the Gryffindor seeker was going to be a force to be reckoned with.

The beaters were next; Ben could tell because he saw his friend in the midst of the students rising up on their brooms. "Him, there," Ben said, pointing him out of the girls, in case they were really interested. "I wonder how they're planning on testing the beaters out?" he wondered aloud; different captains had different methods of measuring beating talent.

My Falconhearted Rosalind
He wondered how they were planning on -- with bats and bludgers, of course! Rosalind glanced incredulously over at the Ravenclaw, wondering if he was really as dense as he seemed or if he had simply misstated his question.

Deciding to ignore it, Rosalind clapped politely at the completion of the seekers' trails. "At least it seems that Gryffindor has found a good replacement seeker," she said lightly.

The beaters got started then, and Rosie took the opportunity to turn her attention to the tryouts. She was finding that she did not really care about the outcome, for all that she was trying to appear that she did. No, she only really cared about the fact that she was out here being seen and showing Headmaster Black that the majority of the women at Hogwarts actually did know how to behave themselves. That was what was important.

The beaters were actually relatively interesting to watch. They had Cailean Beckett, the seasoned beater, out there bouncing bludgers towards the hopefuls. One of them got hit hard enough that Rosalind winced; she thought she heard a crack that might cause the boy to end up in Madam Black's care.

Several other boys dropped out of the running when they found they could not deal with the bludgers, leaving three possible partners for the seasoned beater. This was where it could actually get interesting -- well, other than the sort of interesting that lead to the poor boy who'd been escorted off the pitch and up towards the Hospital Wing.

Two of the boys were sent off to the side to wait, and Mr. Beckett and the third started running drills. It was rather impressive, and Rosalind leaned forward slightly to watch.

Ellory didn't especially care about the way beaters were going to be tested. In her opinion, the only thing they actually had to do was hitting bludgers so, they just had to pick the one who could always hit the ball and of course, not feel pain. Ellory concidered beaters rather masochistic, they knew there was a possibility of them being hit but they still enjoyed playing in that position.

" That hurt." she commented when a ball hit one of the boys. It was still a miracle that his head hadn't opened in two. Ellory, most of the times tended to hurt herself, especially when she visited the dark forest with her friend Grip. Then again, it was different from being hit by a ball.

" I really wonder who they are going to pick." Ellory commented cheerfully when she realized that there were only two of them left. Well, she certainly admired them for being able to survive for so long.

Ben watched with mixed interest while the first few boys were eliminated from the competition, one being sent down with an injury that would probably need hospital wing care. He noticed the girls wince at a few of the blows, but he was more than used to it; having played and practiced for two years, he'd seen more than his fair share of bludger injuries. During his third year once they'd had a stand-in beater for a match (the usual boy had come down with something he'd contracted from ingesting one of the Herbology plants as a dare, which hadn't been at all smart and had put him out of commission for about three days), and no one on the Ravenclaw team had come away without at least a handful of bruises. Most had a broken bone--usually minor things, like fingers, when they'd tried to block a bludger from getting the things that were more important, like their skulls. The Ravenclaw audience was generally displeased with the beater for having been so foolish so close to game time, and it was a gruesome match to watch all-around.

The real interest came when they narrowed it down to three boys--one of whom was a pretty good friend of Ben's, one of his yearmates and a boy he liked considerably. The strategy for testing them seemed to be have Mr. Beckett shoot bludgers at them until they get hit or collapse with exhaustion. The first boy went down after a minute or so, with another injury. Madam Black must have been so thrilled to have to deal with Quidditch try-out injuries twice this year instead of only once.

The injury wasn't exactly debilitating, but if Gryffindor knew what was best they'd probably avoid taking a beater who was foolish enough to let himself get knocked on the head. It happened to the best, but the boy should have been able to do better in try-outs, with only one bludger to contend with and only one target to shoot it at. Ben's friend, Samuel, went next.

"He's a good friend of mine," Ben commented to the girls, in lieu of cheering, since no one else had cheered for any of the try-outs so far and it didn't seem exactly apropro to cheer for the Gryffindor try-outs, anyway, since he was a Ravenclaw. "Samuel Page. Hope he does well." Ben had a feeling he would; he was generally involved in the informal Quidditch skirmishes they sometimes organized, and he usually played beater.

It was several minutes of the back-and-forth before Samuel let his guard down enough for a bludger to sneak in, but when it finally did, it hit the boy square in the chest, with enough force to knock him back off of his broomstick. Sam grabbed for it, but not soon enough; he was falling, and immediately Ben was on his feet, worried for his friend. The bludger was merciless as always; it continued straight through as Sam fell from his broom, and, as Sam was still the closest target, went after him again, getting a good crack in at his head. It then apparently decided to go after Mr. Beckett and leave the poor boy to his freefall, but the damage had been done.

"I should go--" Ben said, almost before he'd even hit the ground. Members of the team were already running out to get him off the field and take him to the hospital wing, and Ben wasn't even really sure that they would let him into the Wing if there were other people who had more of a right to be there, or if his injuries were serious enough, but they were close enough friends that he had to try. "--I should see if he's okay," he said, by way of explanation, and without even another look at the Pendergast sisters was bounding down the stands towards where Mr. Page had fallen.
