Having aged fairly well for her forty years, Missus A has always had long auburn hair that she keeps back out of her face. It is rare, if ever, that you will see her with it unkempt. Propriety is high on her list of priorities, even if her children do not care to follow the same lines of thinking. She is petite, even for the time, standing at a mere 5’1”, but her height has never held her to a disadvantage, she can command a room and several people with just the quirk of her dark eyebrow. With bright blue eyes and a fair complexion she was quite beautiful as a younger woman, though age is creeping its way in, despite her pride and determination to ignore it. Having born four children, she has kept a bit of her baby weight over the years, but you would never be able to tell the way she keeps her corsets tightly laced. Being of the middle class only allows her to wear plainer dresses, but that has never stopped her. The dress is not as important as the person who wears it. She is right handed and if she has her wand in hand, you best watch out.

History: Born forty years ago to the Upton family, a muggle family from Canterbury, the third child and first girl, Mildred was almost at once an unwanted sight. Boys were the coveted gender at the time and while there were already two in her family, she was not entirely welcome. She would not be the last child either another boy would join their family two years after she did and that only solidified her uselessness in her parents’ eyes. Still she grew up comfortably, never completely ignored, but never realy doted upon either. She showed her first sign of magic at the age of five when she became angry at the maid for making her go to bed and she promptly lit the woman’s dress on fire. Her parent's were terrified and sent her to live with an aunt,w ho unbeknownst to her family, was also a witch. Her aunt Harriet explained everything to her and explained about the school she would go to.

Her Hogwarts letter came to her aunt's house as expected and in the fall of 1853, Millie, as she liked to be referred to then, went off to school alone. She instantly fell in love with the place, if only for the fact that this was a place that she was wanted, there were other girls her age, who she could actually talk to rather, than just pretend to play with to make her parents happy. Her parents were all about social connections and as Millie grew, they started to figure out her purpose in life. If they could marry her off to a good family, a rich, perhaps upper middle or upper class family, they gain some social standing. Her Aunt Harriet had some influence over the decision, as she picked a fairly respectable wizarding family, though her niece's parents would never know that. It was easier for her brothers she supposed, but they too, though more appreciated, were going to be used to gain social standing through marriage. Fortunately for them, the Uptons were already a fairly well off family, her father owning a booming business at the time, so they should have been able to sell her off rather reasonably.

At school however, Millie was far away from all of that. She showed a quick aptitude for potions and charms, potions being her strong suit. Unsure of why she was really sorted into Gryffindor rather than Slytherin, Millie figured the Sorting Hat must have its reasons, though she mostly made friends with Slytherin girls in her year. School came very easily to Millie as she finally found something she was good at and could be proud of; she put a lot of work into her schooling. She was also hoping that someday if she was lucky, it would help her to get a good husband, one who might treat her right if she was smart enough and not some blockhead who would just pretend she didn’t exist like her parents did.

It was not surprising, by her fifth year, her Aunt had announced her engagement to one Mr. Victor Aesalon, a young man of twenty at the time, who worked in the ministry. Millie was in awe of his achievements for somebody so young, but didn’t realize he would not be her knight in shining armor, the one to take her out of her reach of her loathsome family. At first he appeared kind and knowledgeable, telling her all about his work in the Beast Division of the Department of Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. He seemed to be genuinely interested in her schooling, her aptitude for potions and her dreams to one day work in the hospital. He charmed his way into her heart and she slowly over the course of the next year, fell in love with him. All her parents knew was that he worked for the government and they were satisfied with that, glad to have a place to pawn her off and no longer worry about her.

Truly out of character for her, as she had always prided herself on propriety and her ability to stay out of trouble, one evening during the fall of her sixth year, while on a Hogsmeade visit, Millie visited Victor and his parents at their home for dinner. After dessert, the two went walking about the house without a chaperon and before she knew it he had seduced her in one of the spare bedrooms on the second floor. Had she her wits about her, she would have said now and told him to wait until their wedding night, unfortunately, she had been allowed a couple of glasses of wine at dinner and her inhibitions were lowered. All she could think about was that they were getting married, eventually, so therefore she shouldn’t worry. Only by mid November, she found herself pregnant and with no other way to hide the baby, asked her parents to push up their wedding date to the Christmas season. She was already a petite girl, and she showed rather quickly, but once she had told Victor, he agreed in order to save their propriety. They were married right before Christmas while Millie was on vacation from Hogwarts and though warned not to consummate their marriage before she graduated, the two cited that they were too much in love to wait, and by The end beginning of January, they announced that they were expecting. Thinking she had just dodged that catastrophe and that Victor was indeed a good man for helping her keep up appearances, Millie highly suspected her mother knew of her indiscretions, but had never said anything.

What Millie did not realize at the time was that she would not be allowed to return to Hogwarts once she was married and pregnant. She should have realized, but since she had always been so proper, she hadn’t ever bothered herself with those kinds of things. It was a shocking blow to her pride, the fact that she would never be allowed to finish her schooling. Her family didn’t see the problem. Considering they were muggles and that she was now married to a good man with a good job that she needn’t worry about her schooling. After all she already had what most girls dreamed of. Victor sealed the deal, telling her as well that her schooling was unnecessary. With a heavy heart and a heavy sigh, she had to do what her husband said and stayed home. Raising a baby was hard work, especially with a very absent husband, but it came naturally to her and when she found out she was pregnant again, she was overjoyed though conflicted because she knew she would never be morethan anything but a housewife.

Maud was born July the fourteenth of the following summer, right after Millie would have graduated from Hogwarts. Unfortunately, Maud was a sickly child and they did not expect her to make it through her first year. She clung to life however and made it through, proving to Millie in a small victory against her parents, that girls were not necessarily the weaker gender. Ezekial joined them in March of 1863 and with each child born to them, Victor became more and more distant and Millie more and more bitter. She had realized her husband was probably having an affair and there was nothing she could do to stop it. Catherine joined the Aesalon family in June of 1865, the last baby Victor and Millie would have as she slowly started refusing him relations by this point. He neither seemed bothered nor angry about this fact and Millie’s heart broke a little bit each time he came home late.

With the passing years and growth of her children, she tired desperately to find solace in her relationships with her children, she wanted them to be perfect, to marry well or to have a good occupation, however she often came out as domineering or overbearing and she was sure this put a strain on her children. She wanted their love and respect as she was not getting it from their father, but she has such poor examples of parents growing up that she did not know how to do it any other way. Their father doted upon them appropriately and they were all still devoted to him but the were too young to realize what was going on, how their parents’ marriage was failing. He no longer doted upon Mille and the green monster of jealous left her feeling unloved and unwanted. Horrified by these feelings, se tried to be a good mother and yearned for her children’s affection.

Finally once all of her children were at school or graduated, Millie could take it no longer. She was constantly alone in the house, Victor off doing Merlin knew what at all hours and she was entirely done with the humiliation. Potions had always been her favorite subject at school after all. One night, while Victor sat in his study she brought him a brandy, as any good wife should, though it was laced with a little something extra. He would go peacefully in his sleep; she could cite a stroke or a heart attack and nobody would know the difference. He was getting old anyway, already close to fifty and the way he “worked” constantly; he could have worked himself into an early grave. It was of no concern to her; the poison left no traces after twelve hours. All she had to do play the part of shocked wife the next morning and that is exactly what she did.

In the weeks after his passing, she played the mourning wife perfectly; though it was hard to miss a man she had never really known and not cared about for many years. Since then Millie has been dodging glances on the street and trying to perfect her children’s lives. Maud marriage was a blessing as Millie suspected the girl would be an old maid for sure, though she is not entirely sure about Maud’s choice of William Rutdledge. Eze is a constant disappointment to her, with his whoring and his boozing, but he will get his own soon enough. Kitty with her determination to play quidditch and abandon all things proper is a hopeless cause. Milling figures that if half of her children prosper, then she has done her job, but that won’t prevent her from interfering in their lives on a daily basis.

Personality: outwardly cold, controlling, sneaky, domineering, overbearing, intelligent, cunning, loyal. Millie does love her children, but she has high expectations from them. Cruelty is not her intention, but her words often come out harsh because she is truthful. She is very loyal to her family and would do anything to protect them. In short, it is her way or the highway.

QUOTE
In the cool autumn air, Elsie sat, curled in her shawl, a book in hand, despite the fading light, her brother Ben, snoozing quietly beside her on the blanket they’d spread out earlier in the afternoon. Ben had been at work, but come home surly for some reason or another. He cited a need to be back outside and dislodged Elsie from her needlework but throwing her sun bonnet on her head to take a walk. She knew where Ben’s walks always led, so she grabbed a blanket and her book before they left. She wasn’t surprised when the ended up sitting under a colorful maple by the lake, watching the ducks float on the water, sitting in comfortable silence. This is how they operated, it always had been. Whenever somebody was in a foul mood, they would grab Elsie and head out for a walk. Both her older sister and older brother often did so. They claimed she was a calming presence and eased their thoughts.

This was no different. Ben hadn’t said a word on their walk down the lane, arm in arm. Elsie enjoyed watching the people on the street, their comings and goings as they hustled about their own lives. Ben seemed lost in how own thoughts, hardly paying attention to where they were going, though they could easily make the trip to the shore with their eyes closed. The path was well worn by the Beauregard family. Having come to Hogsmeade from a coastal town in southern England, the family was used to the sound of crashing waves and having water nearby, now they settled for the lake and often spent as much time there as they did in their own home. As they neared the water, they picked a tree to settle beneath and spread out the quilt. Elsie automatically opened her book, while Ben sat and stared at the smooth surface of the water. She knew if he had something to say, he would eventually get around to it. She was currently reading one of Shakespeare’s plays, Twelfth Night, for the second time. She could never get enough Shakespeare and often went back to read the plays over and over again. She hardly noticed as Ben shifted positions next to her, leaning back to watch the clouds. Whatever was bothering him seemed to be all he could think about. He’d begun an apprenticeship with the local furniture maker and seemed to be enjoying it for once, until today.

“El, do you think I’ll figure out what I actually want to do with my life.” He said suddenly, though Elsie had been expecting it. Ben could never hold his problems in for very long. Marking her place in her book, Elsie closed the cover and looked at him.

“Is it the job Bentley or the people this time?” Sometimes her brother gave up something he was good at simply because he did not like the people he worked with.

“I think it’s just me.” He said vaguely and his sister turned an quirked eyebrow toward him.

“I’m afraid there’s nothing I can do about that for you.” She quipped, laughing lightly at him in jest. “I thought you were enjoying this one?” Ben had tried several different apprenticeships before this and when he landed this one, was finally excited about it.

“Haha El, very amusing.” He sighed, looking up at her. “I do, I like working with my hands, creating the shape and changing the wood, but is this really what I want to do with my life?” Ah so there was the problem, he feared that he wouldn’t be good enough if this is what he did for a living. Elsie smiled warmly at him.

“Ben there is nothing wrong with working with your hands. It’s a skilled profession. Once you finish your apprenticeship and begin working for the company, you may one day get to take over. Any girl would be lucky to have you, no matter what your occupation and you know it. Mom and dad would be happy knowing you’re happy.” Everybody had their own insecurities, it was natural, normal, but Bentley seemed to focus on his more than most people. Even Adella and Elsie wondered about it from time to time; they all wanted to make their hard-working parents proud, but Ben, as the oldest, seemed to take it to heart. “If this is something you love, you enjoy doing, then there is nothing wrong with that.”

“You’re right,” Ben said as he sat up next to her looking out across the water again, quiet for a moment. “You’re always right El, thanks.”

Elsie just smiled before standing. “I think mum will be looking for us, it’ll be dinner soon.”
