It had been a fair while since Maud had seen her sister, in fact it had been before she had returned home too sick to work though had she not known any better, her sister could very well have visited her while she was at the worst stages and probably not have noticed. As it was, she had very little recollection of what had happened in those weeks and even less of an idea of the order of events.

Since her sister had come home from school the day before, Maud had jumped at the opportunity to see her. She was also curious as to why she was staying with their brother instead of coming home, she didn't really fancy being alone with their mother much longer with Eze gone. She loved her dearly but she was perpetually afraid of waking up and finding the woman standing over her in the middle of the night. It had only happened in nightmares so far but that didn't make it any less frightening.

Arriving at her brother's house on foot (for she could only apparate so far), she knocked lightly on the door and waited to be let in. It then occurred to her that perhaps her sister was not home and she had missed her. Should she perhaps have written in advance? Oh yes, she knew she should have!

Kitty gazed upon the sixth blank parchment before her, the pen hovering over the yellowish paper with anticipation as its writer contemplated her next written words; though the words, she was well aware, would never come. How difficult could it be, she questioned herself constantly, to create a brief, but clear letter informing her secret fiancé of his child she was inevitably carrying? Quite challenging…, Kitty thought to herself irritably as she firmly threw her quill down with a resigned sigh, and let her gaze wander towards the window above her brother’s desk to stare at the scenery.

Why was she situated at her brother’s residence rather than with her mother and Maud? Well, it was quite a simple explanation: Whilst Josephine, her soon-to-be sister-in-law-, endured the expedition she was drafted for against her will, Kitty was to be cared for by her brother for the duration of her newfound pregnancy. The plan had been created only a week before and Kitty had been rather afraid that her mother would seek deeper into their innocent plan of Kitty spending half the summer in her brother’s presence in order to assist him in coping with Josephine’s absence, but her fears had been relieved once she received her mother’s curt consent and demands for her youngest daughter and child to be safe and keep out of trouble. Nevertheless, despite her mother’s acceptance of the pretentious tale told to her, Kitty could not help but be slightly cautious for fear her mother should discover the actual reason behind Kitty’s stay with Jedidiah. Mrs. Aesalon, though Kitty would attempt to defend her of being otherwise, was a harsh and demanding woman with a fierce belief that propriety ought to be upheld at all times, and that should one of her closest friends of families submit or commit to an immoral action, they should be cut off and punished severely.

With another weary, resigned sigh, Kitty retrieved her gaze from the beautiful summer day out of doors, and surveyed her surroundings. She had only been in Jed’s dwelling a few times since he bought it, but she must admit, she expected more of a mess. While Jed was not as irresponsible or disorganized as Eze, Kitty had a suspecting feeling that Josephine or their mother had had a hand in ensuring that Jed’s apartment appeared respectable and neat should visitors come to call. Nevertheless, the dwelling she would spend the majority of her pregnancy in appeared comfortable and satisfying, so Kitty set about to making herself as at home as possible by first unpacking the gowns and nightgowns from her trunk into the wardrobe situated in her chamber. Her compartments was of a decent size, if not a little bare and undecorated, but that was nothing she could not fix.

However, just before she could occupy herself with unpacking and settling in, a knock at the door made her spine stiffen instantly. Oh, good Heavens!’, she thought frantically, Mother has discovered about my being with child, and she has come to publicly disown me and disdain my child as a devil spawn. The fetus can be dubbed nearly any name under the sun, but a devil spawn is not one of them. Hearing the gentle knock at the door once more, Kitty set aside her concerns and took a deep breath to steady herself before hoisting herself from the chair to receive the guest outside the door. Twisting the doorknob, Kitty opened it a crack only to be met with familiar blue eyes that instantly brought a genuine smile to her lips. “Maudy!,” she whipped opened the door in happiness and excitement, “This is quite a pleasant surprise. I had not been expecting you.”

Kitty had always been the more outgoing one of the two Aesalon sisters. Maud sometimes wished she could find the courage to be as brave and confident as she was but alas, she was Maud, timid little mousy Maud whom shrank from her own shadow. She would never be like Kitty and she had long ago come to realize and accept that fact, why it had to be so she didn't know but she supposed she was as she was for a reason. Not that that made it any easier, of course.

When the door was opened by none other than her very own sister, a warm smile spread across her face. It was so very good to see her again, she hadn't been aware of how much she had missed her younger sister but she had. Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that had she not made it through her ordeal of consumption, she might have never seen her sister again. "Kitty! Please forgive me, I ought to have written, I know ought to have but..." she trailed off for a moment, making a break in her apologies to search for the right words. "I haven't seen you since before... Before I got sick and I've been with Mother the whole time since Eze left and- Not that I'm saying Mother's company isn't very pleasant, it's very... lovely... But I've missed my sister." She stumbled through her words awkwardly, reaching the final conclusion which was very simple in the end and one that she could very well have just cut to from the start.

Maud bit the inside of her lip nervously for a moment, "You're not... Not busy are you?" she asked, sounding crestfallen, which she would be if the answer was in the positive. "If you're busy, I can come back later. Any time really since I'm no longer employed..." Now that she thought about it, she didn't really want to go home any time soon. Her mother would surely jump down her throat about Kitty the moment she walked through the door. "How is Kitty? What is she doing? Is your brother really struggling? Should I go and check on them?" All to which Maud would likely be overwhelmed and resort to whimpers and mumbles while trying to give as vague an answer to each as she could. "You look very well, Kitty," she finally mentioned, envying the color in her sister's cheeks and the vision of health she appeared to be. Maud was quite sure she looked as pale and unhealthy as usual, possibly still somewhat gaunt from consumption though it would probably be only noticeable to Kitty since she hadn't seen her in a long while.

Kitty swiftly threw open the door, and took her elder sister’s hand in her own and gently guided her inside the confines of Jedidiah’s apartment. Indeed, the quaint dwelling was bare and mostly unadorned, but it was clean and orderly, so Kitty could not be embarrassed to show Maud in. However, Kitty’s eagerness to welcome her sister into her residence for the whole of the summer was not to show off, but rather due to the fact that Maud had almost died in her absence; she had nearly lost her only elder sister, and the prospect of losing Maud at all brought tears to Kitty’s eyes. Though not an avid fan of displaying emotions, Kitty was capable of affection, and when it came to her siblings’ wellbeing and overall presence in her life, she could not fathom her life without each of them present.

“Oh Maudy,” she gently chastised, quite used to her elder sister’s excessive concerns regarding propriety, before proceeding to put on a pot of tea for she and her sister to consume, “Please cease your concerns; you ought to know by now how happy your presence makes me!” Indeed, Kitty was feeling quite jolly, and if she had not been aware that she possessed a certain amount of restraint, she would have been humming a merry song; quite out of character for Kitty, of course, but not unexpected. Kitty could be carefree and jolly when she wanted to, and her sister’s (or any of her siblings, really) company was the cause of her jolliness at present.

“You appear quite in good health, Sis,” she admitted, but Kitty could not help but examine Maud from the corner of her eye. As always, Maud was of a sickly complexion and rather thin (a little too thin for Kitty’s liking), and she bit her lip in anxiousness. Of course, Maud had always possessed a sickly complexion and thin frame due to her consumption, but in Kitty’s frame of mind, the symptoms seemed to her multiplied and she was beginning to wonder if the healer that had attended to her had not poisoned her as well as partially cured her? Kitty became aware of how firmly her teeth were grazing her lips when she suddenly jumped, startled, from the whistle of the tea kettle, alerting her that the tea had finished brewing, and she quietly set herself to the task of preparing the teat tray when she acknowledged her sister once more, the warm and affectionate smile a younger sister displayed across her features, “Ah Maudy, it has been a long time since we have last just spoken, has it not? Indeed, your letters are a delight to receive and read, but nothing compares to true one-on-one socialization.”

Setting the tea tray down upon the small, cherry wood table, Kitty plopped herself down in a chair opposite Maud, and once again took Maud’s cold and bony hands in her own as she inquired softly, “Now, all questions about myself set aside, how about you; how have you been faring? Mother is not an easy woman to impress, nor is she the best of company; you must be exhausted. Come, have you some tea and relax. There is no Mother here to unsettle you.” And please refrain from inquiring any further about my health, Maudy; I am rather afraid you will balk at the truth of my radiance, she thought to herself as she caressed Maud’s hands affectionately.

A gentle smile formed on Maud's face as she was lead inside. She was very surprised at quite how deeply it was suddenly affecting her now that she could see her sister. Seeing her for the first time since she had fallen ill and had to quit her teaching. Had luck not been on her side, she might very well have never seen her little sister again and it more than dismayed her.

Her sister seemed to be in rather fine spirits she had noted, a fact which somehow managed to make her feel more emotional than she was already becoming. She remained silent as her sister spoke to her, trying very hard to control herself and not burst into hysterical tears of relief. She was trying very hard but to little avail. The sudden noise of the teapot was by some stroke of luck, distraction enough to rid Maud of the urge to cry. For the most part anyhow. "I have missed you most terribly," she admitted in reply, her eyes extra shiny due to lingering tears though they were not so pressing as they had been.

Sitting the chair across from her sister's, Maud tried very hard to match her sister's upbeat mood but it was certainly not easy when the thought of possibly have dying without seeing her sister again weighed on her mind. Clearing her throat, she steadily began to tend to her sister's line of questioning. "I have been all right and getting stronger each day." She missed out mentioning any of the changes so far since her illness had left her with. She found herself lightheaded very quickly nowadays and shorter of breath than she could ever remember being but she supposed it was a small price to pay for life. Of course since then she had also found herself engaged. The realization that she might not have told Kitty (and certainly not in person) struck her and while it was very likely her sister knew already, she decided she would tell her again anyhow. "And Wi- I mean, Mr. Rutledge, has asked me to marry him! I am sure I told you in a letter already but it is not quite the same as in person. Oh Kitty! I shall not be an old maid after all, I am so happy!" She afforded herself a very broad grin which she directed cheerily at her sister, the somewhat somber thoughts of before buried to a further back region of her mind. "Will you be my bridesmaid?" she asked eagerly, her eyes lit up with rare excitement.
