Bare foot were almost undetectable as Valentine walked around corridors. It was past midnight when she left Ravenclaw common room to breathe fresh air. Once again she couldn’t sleep, because of nightmares that started to hunt her every night. She was dreaming about the night when her mother died. Valentine was with her that night. She saw the vampire, who killed her mother. She would never forgive that face. Suddenly Ravenclaw common room became for her too small and stuffy to spend a minute longer inside. She needed to go out and escape from this nightmare.

Stony floor froze her feet, but the girl seemed not to care. She walk down the corridor, dressed only in her nightgown and shawl wrapped around her shoulders. Golden hair wasn’t put in neat bun, but she let them fall freely on her back. Nobody could see her on those abandoned corridors in the middle of the night. Only paintings whispered their indignation about her outfit and the fact that a maid from a good house was walking alone around the castle in the middle of the night. Valentine didn’t care.

She couldn’t sleep.

Edwin Wolff - June 4, 2012 06:53 AM (GMT)
Sleep...not something that he could afford the night before he took the potions test. He wasn't BAD at the class by any means. In fact, he was near the top of the class. All the same, he had been working on a potion all night and it wasn't quite right. It wasn't an easy potion by easy means, but he wanted to impress his professor, and the potion he was attempting to make had many properties similar to those that he would be tested on the next day. Edwin wanted to do perfectly this next day. He didn't want to settle for fourth...even second was not enough for him this time. He wanted to be the best.

At this point though, there was something he didn't fully understand on the study material. It wasn't anything major, but if he didn't get it figured out, he was going to be in trouble. He couldn't afford any missed points this time around. It wasn't that he was getting any pressure from anyone else...it was himself. His ambition to be the best kept driving him further and further, but until he was at the top, he didn't think it was going to be enough. He didn't resent those above him. He respected them. He knew that he worked just as hard as the others at the top (for the most part). He just needed to figure out how to be just a little better.

He stopped at a window in the castle. It was night. He wasn't noisy in his walking. He did this frequently and if professors or prefects were roaming around, they wouldn't be able to catch him easily. He wasn't always one to have to escape from being caught, but he had tricks to make clean get-a-ways. It was helpful especially when he was going around...not exactly following the rules.

As he looked out the window, the moon illuminated the grounds. It was an eerie effect. The shadows were long and thin and even the slightest movement seemed to create unreal effects, as if the lawn had creatures appearing at every shake of a tree bow. He smiled a little. It was strangely beautiful. It was bright enough so he could see...yet the mystery of the dark gave it character that it didn't have during the day.

He laughed at himself in his mind. He was never poetic. Perhaps he needed sleep. It was late and if he didn't get sleep, the studying he did that night would've been in vain. He would fall asleep during the long potions test and fail. Of course, that was worst case, but it was very possible in his mind. He pushed off the window sill with his arms and turned to leave. He stopped in his tracks though, as he seemed to not be alone.

At first, he didn't think it was a human who he stared at. He thought it was possibly a ghost that inhabited the place, but he saw her skin and realized that this wasn't a ghost. He didn't recognize her as a Prefect either. He had made notes of them throughout his stay so he knew to avoid if he was going to do something...less than rule abiding. As his eyes adjusted to the dark, he recognized her as a Ravenclaw. He didn't know her first name, but he knew that she was a Van Helsing, a very interesting family. He had been in a class or two with her, but he wasn't good with names of most people in the school (beyond those that he deemed note-worthy).

He wasn't usually one to start conversations either. He was usually a quiet one, but he didn't want to come off as creepy. Plus, she was alone at night. Even if it was in Hogwarts, a lady (or maid in this case) shouldn't have been alone in the halls. Antisocial as he could be, he had been raised to be a gentleman around women. He nodded to her. "Good evening miss. Are you alright wandering around at this hour alone?" He asked her softly. Edwin, while raised to be respectful, didn't know what always to ask in some situations as this one.

The girl’s thoughts were far away from Hogwarts’ castle at this moment. Valentine thought about her fiancée, who seemed to disappear not so long after the announcement of their engagement. It bothered her, because he was her playmate during her childhood, he used to babysit her. Now ,he was gone and nobody could tell where he was. Nobody. As if something bad happened to him and nobody knew about it. This fact worried her a lot. It shouldn’t be like that.

When she heard that someone was close and was speaking to her, she jumped on her spot. Her heart beat a little bit faster. Oh, was he a prefect? Was she going to lose points from her house? With an expression of horror she looked at this person, silently praying for a leap of luck. The fortune smiled to her this time and it wasn’t a teacher not perfect. It was her year mate as far as she could recognize him. Valentine blushed realizing that her outfit wasn’t the most appropriate for such kind of a meeting at night. "Good evening" the Ravenclaw girl curtsied politely, still blushing. Oh, how she couldn’t be a ghost? She wouldn’t have to explain herself now. "I just can’t sleep and I needed some air…" Valentine looked at the boy suspiciously. "What are you doing here yourself?"
