Title: wrong choice
Description: -open-
Jesse Hatchitt - May 28, 2012 11:48 PM (GMT)
While Jesse had thought taking time out of his studies would help him clear his head and that getting out his broom for a quick fly would do the trick; he was very wrong.
His head had been up in the clouds, not in the literal sense, while he was flying and before he knew it, he's lost control of where he was on the pitch, and couldn't avoid hitting one of the goal posts, sending himself careening from his broom. Fortunately, he wasn't much more than fifteen feet up in the air at the time and the sand beneath the goal posts meant for a much softer landing. It didn't however, prevent him from dislocating his shoulder on the landing. Or at least that was what he assumed he had done.
It was a long, excruciating walk up to the hospital wing, a place Jesse had frequented more than he cared to admit. At least he hadn't killed himself yet. Yet being the key word. In fact, so far this year, he'd twisted his ankle, fractured his wrist and now possibly dislocated his shoulder. Man quidditch was a great sport.
"Hello?" He called, ambling into the hospital wing, looking around for the nurse. He wondered if she was in and sincerely hoped so. Well, anybody that could help him would be nice, even it was an intern or somebody who could numb the pain before thrusting his joint back into the socket. "I think I've dislocated my shoulder." He added, hoping it would push somebody to hurry along.

<p>It had only been two or three weeks since Mina experienced her last monthly bleeding, but her schedule on that point was-much like the rest of her-very far from conforming to any sort of schedule; in fact, she was fairly certain that it had a mind of its own, and came whenever it could most accurately inconvenience her.<p>
<p>She had been on her broom, enchanting quaffles to fly at the goal posts in an effort to better hone her keeping skills-which she feared had waned somewhat as it had been so long since last she'd played-when it happened: the bloody awful cramps caught her in the gut, and she spiraled to the ground where, kneeling in the fresh, dewy grass, she only just managed to bite back the agonizing pain.<p>
<p>Her mother had always had a nearly painless bleeding, and Mina-who had received hers very, very early, at the tiny age of nine-could never seem to convince her of how awful the cramps truly were.<p>
<p>Now, gritting her teeth against it, she shouldered her broom and headed off to the hospital wing. It was a room familiar to her as her own dormitory, for it seemed she was there almost constantly-if not because of the bleedings, then due to a quidditch injury, as a result of her mischief making, or even just because of plain clumsiness.<P>
<p>This time, however, she was surprised to see that she was not the only one, and Mina winced sympathetically when her eyes landed on Jesse, who had sustained what looked like a very bad dislocation.<p>
<p>"Hello, Jesse" she said brightly, holding tight to her stomach-as though if she let go, it would fall off-as she crossed the room to his side. "That looks-sort of nasty, to be honest." Raising an eyebrow rather wryly, she added, "How did you manage to do that? Even I'm impressed-"<p>
<p>Mina had yet to manage to dislocate her shoulder-or, for that matter, anything at all-though she surmised coolly that it was probably only a matter of time.<P>

Amused, but not relieved when it was his own cousin, Mina, to enter the Hospital Wing behind him, Jess gave her a grim smile. He wanted to lie down, but the pain of the dislocation was preventing him from doing so as putting any pressure on the joint left it searing with even more pain. He was no wimp when it came to pain, he'd had so many injuries over his quidditch career that he couldn't even count how many trips to the Hospital Wing he'd made, but he was fairly sure this was the worst. A break would have been preferable. The worst part was that it wasn't even a game or something, he was just clumsy.
"Flying, not paying attention, nothing new." He grunted, trying not to sound snappy. Jess wasn't exactly in the mood to be teased for his stupidity. Flying was something he rarely had to think about and why today was any different was beyond him, but Jess hadn't been paying attention and wound up crashing into the goal post.
"Dammit..." He murmured as his arm convulsed involuntarily. Holding it up hurt and letting it hang hurt even more. Instead Jess chose to cradle it against his chest, his other arm just barely supporting it. It wasn't exactly comfortable, but it would do until somebody came to see them. Jess wondered briefly if the nurse had been taken off on the Trail Expeditions, but surely the school would have gotten a temporary replacement? "What about you, why're you here?" He questioned without seeing anything obviously wrong with her.

<p>Mina grimaced with sympathy at her cousin's reply, and shockingly managed to restrain the smile that threatened at the corners of her lips; she could see well enough that he was in genuine pain, and Mina was fairly certain that, had the same fate befallen her, she would likely have bitten off the head of anyone who dared tease.<p>
<p>"You should probably watch where you're going." she couldn't help but respond, though she managed to pass it off as a solemn token of her wisdom-albeit tinged with grim amusement.<P>
<p>Generally, Mina wasn't very clumsy; more often than not, it was the sheer recklessness that overtook her in the midst of a good game-for she, when threatened was capable of becoming extremely competitive-that led to her downfall; and always, there was that frustrating moment of utter clarity-Oh, Merlin-again?! -at some point or another prior to the inevitable screw up.<p>
<p>At least Jess was more distracted than plain stupid, as she knew she could be when wrapped up in the moment.<p>
<p>When she saw the way he fiddled restlessly with his arm, her expression softened; he definitely looked to be in a lot of pain, of that much she was certain. "I've some absolutely awful cramps." she replied plainly, and without the slightest trace of modesty, grinning; let Jesse make of it what he would, but Mina certainly didn't care either way, for she had never been one to hide behind secrets, at least not where this was concerned. "Though how much good it will do me-or you-I'm not entirely sure..I'm fairly certain that Ms. Black is away on the trail; when she'll be back I haven't the slightest clue, but...I haven't heard of her being replaced."<p>
<p>Arms and legs sprawled on her cot, Mina added rather lazily, "I wasn't much in the mood for class, actually, which is why I really came if you want to know the truth of it; I can do Cheering Charms with my eyes closed, and I've no wish to be giggling like an idiot all day, thank you very much."<p>

Jesse couldn't help but roll his eyes when his cousin explained her reason for being in the Hospital Wing. He enough sisters and female cousins to know exactly what she meant and therefore did not question her. The Hatchitts were a pretty open family and Jess knew cramps could be accompanied by irritability, so best to play nice at this point.
He groaned when she confirmed his suspicious. Surely one of the professors could step in then? Honestly, why they hadn't bothered to find a replacement was ridiculous. A school full of teenagers? Where else would a nurse be more necessary? He could only hope that a professor would pop in sooner or later to take care of them. Anybody really, if the could get him the painkiller tonic he'd be a happy camper until somebody qualified could fix his shoulder. Hell, they could do it the old-fashioned way and he'd be great.
'Yeah yeah yeah." He should have been paying attention to where he was going, but it happened. "Would have, could have, should have, none are doing me any good at the moment." He sighed, but he did agree with her. Missing class at this point was a welcome respite from the review of everything they'd done over the year. Jess was a good student, he didn't need all of the revision they were being hammered with this late in the school year.
Attempting to lie down, Jesse leaned back against the stack of pillows very gently, leaning heavily on his right side, the uninjured side. It wasn't so bad if he kept still... This was going to be a long afternoon if there was no capable adult around. "You ready for summer?" He questioned, closing his eyes for a moment, trying to breath through the ache in his shouder.

<p>Mina sprawled out as far as possible on the little cot, her cheek cool where it touched against the thin, linen coverlet. It was a comfort, simply to lie here, and she wished that she could all day, though surely if any of the professors were to come upon her, a few well placed questions would reveal that she was anywhere but where she was meant to be.<p>
<p>It was a blessing and a curse that Elladora was not here now. On the one hand, the nurse would surely be able to dig up a cure for the awful cramps Mina was experiencing-or, at the very least, some kind of balm to ward off the pain. On the other, once such a medicine had been administered, Mina would swiftly have been dismissed, which meant that short of wandering the halls under the guise of a Disillusionment Charm, she would likely have had to return to class.<p>
<p>She doubted, though, that her cousin was quite as indecisive about the nurse's absence; he seemed in an awful lot of pain, after all, and what use was a hospital wing if not to heal its students? As he said-surely there was someone to replace her? Or was he expected simply to sit here in an agony of pain until someone who knew enough of healing to stick his shoulder back in its socket happened by?<p>
<p>"Maybe-I could set it?" she began, biting back a grin at the blunt answer she was nearly positive she would receive. "After all-it just needs to be popped back in place; how hard can it be?" Okay, so maybe it was a little more complicated than that-but they wouldn't know until they'd tried, right?<p>
<p>Mina sat up straighter with a weary sigh, and dangled her legs over the cot's side. Summer. Was she ready for summer? It seemed to Mina that the vacation was a double-edged sword. Perhaps she would have been looking forward to it more were there any chance of seeing her parents; but she knew full well the unlikeliness of that possibility. Of course, she was generally far happier with her cousins, where there were always things to do, always conversation to be had-but it would have been nice, for a change, to see her mother and father...<p>
<p>"I guess." she shrugged, glancing up. In all honesty, though, she far preferred being away at Hogwarts. "It'll be nice to see Noah again. What about you?"<p>

Summer would be a welcome event in his life, he was thinking. It would be a hell of a lot easier to keep an eye on Connie, not to mention they had Gabe's wedding to look forward to. Lots to do in regards to that and Jess didn't mind helping really, it wasn't all that bad. Of course he had also claimed best man for himself and that meant taking on all of the accompanying responsibilities. "I think summer couldn't come fast enough." He said finally, choosing to answer her second question before her first. He wasn't sure what he wanted to do.
Rolling his head over to the side, to look at her like she was crazy just to be a brat, Jess pondered for a moment before actually saying anything. If the nurse really was no available and there was no substitute lurking around, something had to be done. All she would have to do was pull his arm into the right position and it should pop back into place. It would be better than nothing and certainly better than lying here in agony all night. He wondered if he should just go seek out a professor to see if they would have a solution, but most of them were probably grading fools, trying to get grades done in time for the end of the term.
'Sure why not?" He sighed, a grim smile on his face as he sat up as best he could, though the pain shot through his entire body like a bolt of lightening. "Anything at this point to get it to stop." At least once it was back in the socket and everything was no longer being stretched out, he was sure it would slow to a dull ache rather than a blinding pain. "Be quick?" He pleaded, laughing slightly in anticipation for the oncoming pain. Jess had a knack for laughing at all of the wrong times.

<p>As far as Mina was concerned, summer could take as long as it liked in coming; she certainly wasn't in any rush. With some effort, however, she merely nodded and put it from her mind; there was some time yet until the vacation arrived, and she resolved to make the best of it-besides, there were more important things to worry about at the moment...like how in the world she was going to set Jesse's shoulder.<p>
<P>Gnawing meditatively at her lower lip, she swiveled in her seat so that the two were face to face. He seemed nervous-of course, she couldn't blame him for that; the matter would have been worrying enough with a practiced nurse, let alone a kid his age-but luckily not very faint. Jesse was strong, and likely he would grin and bear whatever he had to.<p>
<p>Mina nodded solemnly at his grudging consent and slid abruptly to the floor. "Okay," she said brightly, crossing the room to his side and eying his injured shoulder inquisitively, "I've never done this before-but how hard can it be, really?" The question was a rhetorical one, but even if she had been seeking an answer, she doubted she would have gotten any kind of proper response; if Jesse had experienced pain before-which she felt sure, as a fellow quidditch enthusiast, he undoubtedly had-then he would be steeling himself for what was coming.<p>
<p>"Okay-on the count of five. Five, four, three-" Before she had finished, Mina moved quickly, tugging it to the right and pushing in and up in rotation. If there was one thing she had learned from the breaks she had had set-though surely they were not half as awful as a dislocation-it was that surprise was the best element.<p>
<p>"There," she said, falling back in her seat and watching him for any sign that she had somehow made matters worse rather than better; from the sound of it, though, everything was back to the way it was supposed to be-though the transition wasn't one she envied him.<P>

He was not too sure about this, but he did have a bottle of his mom's headache tonic in his room, maybe that would help any kind of pain? He hoped so, even if he had to take the whole bottle... Well not the whole thing, he'd probably sleep for a week, or die, either one. Jess watched his cousin apprehensively as she approached, breathing deeply through his nose. He knew this was going to hurt, but it would be better instantly if she did it right. Well, he supposed there really was no way to do it wrong. It was pull and pop it back in. He'd seen it done before, one night when Gabe and his buddies had had a little too much to drink. If the drunks could do it, he was sure he and Mina could handle it.
Readying himself, he stuck his fist in his mouth to prevent the inevitable screaming. Maybe biting himself until he bled would hurt more than having his shoulder popped back into place. Looking at Mina, he just nodded as she started to count, five, fou- HOLY HELL. He bit down on his hand sharply, very aware of both pains as Mina pulled on his arm and the resounding POP of his joint popping back in place.
It felt infinitely better, but still raw. The tendons were stretched, no doubt and would be tender for a while, but at least it didn't hurt anymore. "Better." He breathed out between his teeth, laying back down now that it no longer hurt. "Much, much better." He sighed, feeling everything shift back into place and get comfortable again.

<p>Briefly, it occurred to Mina that she would never hear the end of it from her aunt if she ended up somehow detaching Jesse's arm; of course, Madame Black could probably right any wrong, but she wasn't about at the moment, and so that point was moot.<p>
<p>She grit her teeth at the sound of it, but decided rather hopefully that it seemed to have fitted itself back into place; at the very least, the agony in Jesse's eyes had faded somewhat, and he was gingerly moving his arm.<p>
<p>
<p>"There." she said brightly, grinning. "Huh. I would make a good nurse. I mean-nothing's falling off or anything, right?" she hedged, looking him over as though expecting his hand to suddenly twitch and disconnect from his wrist entirely of its own volition.<p>
<p>"Did it hurt a lot?" From where she was standing, it certainly hadn't looked like much fun.<p>

Jesse Hatchitt - July 11, 2012 10:56 PM (GMT)
Letting out a low hiss through his teeth as Mina pulled his arm in and the loud pop sounded through the hospital wing as his shoulder slid back into place. It took all he had not to shout or groan in pain, but the instant he shoulder was back in place, he felt better. He'd have to find a sling for it. Maybe he could rip apart one of his pillow cases and make that work. Perhaps he could charm one of the girls in his charms class to make that happen. Couldn't be too hard really. He had a charming smile after all and quite a few people were better at charms than he was. It wasn't his best class, not that he was bad at it, but there were people who were better at it.
"I think I'll survive, but I wouldn't get too excited about a career in healing. Your bedside manners are terrible." He joked, gently rotating his shoulder, easing it around the joint, getting it used to the rotation again. Yup, that would be sore for quite some time.
Sitting up, he wondered if Mina would hang out or not, but he was off to find some of his mom's headache tonic. It would have to get rid of some of the ache at least. "I think I'm going to go back to my room, take some tonic and go to bed." He mused aloud. It seemed that the nurse was going to be of no use to them, though that was unfair as she wasn't even there. He would have to bring that up to their head of house next time he saw the professor. There really should be some sort of substitute while the nurse was out. It wasn't safe to let students hang out in the hospital wing and set one another's shoulders. Honestly.
"Good luck with those girly problems." Jess said, standing from the bed, wincing as he cradled his arm against his chest once more. "That was fun, let's not to it again any time soon." He joked lightly as he walked away from his cousin. "Stay outta trouble, good luck on your exams." Jess said over his shoulder with a wave using his good arm.
