March 12, 20124:36 PMIt was no secret to anyone who knew her that Verity Winthrop was a worrier. She had been since she was a child. Perhaps it was a side effect of the obsessive-compulsive disorder that she kept carefully medicated, or just a natural tendency she'd inherited from her mother, who was also a worrywart, but there was pretty much nothing too minor to escape her attention when it came to her child. Well, children, now; before January, it had just been her precious daughter, Kayla, but now Kayla had a step-brother, Jacob. Both were five, and both were in the same kindergarten class, and it was a huge relief to Ver that Kayla had Doc around at school; they got along well, and she knew that with Doc around, Kayla wouldn't have to worry about being lonely until she made new friends in Evergreen.
Still, it wouldn't hurt to check in with the kids' teacher, would it? She'd called a few days back and arranged to meet with the kindergarten teacher, to check in on their progress. Jacob, unsurprisingly, was ahead of his class; there was a reason his dad called him Doc, after all. The serious little boy was definitely an intellectual in the making, and though she'd only been his stepmother a couple of months now, Ver couldn't help but be proud of the grades he was getting, and the work that the teacher showed her.
Kayla was doing well, too; though she wasn't as smart as her brother, she was just about average or a little ahead of that, the same way her mom had been at that age. She showed a lot of promise and was starting to develop good relationships with other kids in the classroom, the teacher said, but showed some attention problems. Nothing too serious, she hastened to assure Ver, but something that should be watched just in case.
When their meeting time came to an end, Ver thanked the woman profusely, and headed back out towards the parking lot, relieved. Given that Kayla's father had left them not that long ago, and the little redhead now had a new stepfather and new stepbrother, some mild attention problems really weren't that bad; Ver, always hoping for the best but expecting the worst, had half been expecting to hear that Kayla had been turning in disturbing drawings or something like that.
She was torn out of her reveries as she turned towards the front hall just in time to hear a muffled crash and the skittering of--something--over tiled floors. She looked around quickly and had no difficulty spotting the woman who'd dropped some of the craft supplies she'd been carrying. "Oh, let me help you with that!" Ver said, crossing over and crouching down to gather some of the colored pencils that had escaped their container. "You've got enough supplies there to decorate the Eiffel Tower..." she said with a little laugh. "Where are you headed?" [/list]
