This is a set of rules and guidelines for people participating in RP threads on these forums. Feel free to post comments/suggestions below, thanks!
RP Thread Rules
1) Do NOT power game
power gaming is defined as the following:
bunnying - the act of controling another persons character in any way, shape or form. This includes stating that your attack hits, saying what someone elses character does, or using an undodgeable attack. Refer to the rp guidlines for more information on bunnying.
god-moding - the use of highly overpowered attacks or things with global effects (eg. destroying a planet). All this does is take away from someone elses fun, so stay away from it.
invulnerability - Your character blocks, or dodges every attack thrown at them, and never seems to become injured or fatigued. This is similar to god-moding in the sense that it uses overpowered abilities, yet even expierienced rpers will sometimes fall into a habit of miraculously dodging everything. This only takes away from the expierience for other rpers, and should be avoided.
2) Do NOT seriously injure or kill another person's character or a key NPC without permission
3) STAY IN-CHARACTER!
The in character part of your post should always be much larger than the out of character portion. Posts containing nothing but out of character chat in an rp thread will be considered spam, as will ooc unrelated to the thread (eg. What is your favourie pet?).
4) HAVE FUN!
RP Thread Guidlines
1) Description and Detail - One important thing to keep in mind in an RP post is the more detailed and descriptive you are, the better the post is to read and the easier it is for the next person to respond. Try to stay away from posts that are only a couple of lines long, and especially try to avoid a post that is only speach in response to someone else. Get detailed with what your character did while speaking. Just remember the more detail and description the better your post will be. Think of this it as reading a book, the more detailed the author is the more you enjoy it right? So use the same thought process when posting. Also, try to make the transition through your post smooth. Don't jump from topic to topic and stick with the story/plot as best as you can.
2) Grammar and Spelling - When you post be sure to proof read what you've written. If your post is a jumble of mispelled words with bad grammar and punctiation then it is going to be difficult for others to read and follow. You don't have to be an english master, but just write to the best of your ability and be sure to proof read your post. Don't be hasty when posting. If you don't have time to write a nice descriptive post and proof read it, then don't post. The thread isn't going anywhere, simply post and catch up when you have time.
3) Characters - There are two major don'ts in RP threads when it comes to characters. One is to never control someone elses character without there permission. Do not speak for another person's character or say how they react to something. Little things are fine, like if you throw a fake puch at someone you can say they flinch; or if you hand someone your pack and ask them to hold it you can say they took it and nodded. Small things like that are ok and when the other person posts a reply they can elaborate further if they wish. Also, do not kill another person's character or seriously injure them. If you wish to attack/kill someone else character then you will have to RP battle them. This means that each of you post back and forth and describe what you are doing and how you attack, but don't post the results of your attack. Instead the person you attacked will say the results of that attack. This includes the results of spells cast on another person's character, you can post that you cast a Domination spell on someone and try to control them, but leave it to that player to tell you if their character was effected by it or not. Note however, that when it comes to random NPCs these rules do not apply and you are allowed to kill them and do as you wish, for the most part. But Key NPCs should be treated the same as Player Characters, they are basically PCs controlled by the GM.
The second major don't in an RP thread is do not play a god or an over powered character. If you're character is too powerful and does too much then you are only taking away from other people's fun. Plus, personally I enjoy having my character mess up or get injured from time to time. It adds alot more depth to the story and to your character.
4) Knowledge - Remember to keep OOC and IC information seperate. Your character may not know all of the things that you know, so try and make the distinction when posting. You might know about another character in the thread from reading their profile, but your characetr doesn't know that information. If another character runs ahead of the group and gets attacked by a Centaur, your character won't know this right away until you are in hearing distance of the battle. There are many instances when OOC and IC Knowledge needs to be seperated by the player, just use your best judgement.
5)Realism - Realism is a very important part of rping. Keep your thinking similar to your characters personality, and have them act as they would in real life. Realism goes hand-in-hand with detail, when it comes to rping, making threads much more interesting to read, and take part in. Note that realism also encompasses part of god-moding and invulnerability, as neither of those are realistic, and usually aren't even marginally possible.
