I've always trimmed every three months to maintain my ends. You don't have to go without trimming to have extremely long hair, but it may take a little longer. Personally, I like the look of neatly trimmed ends, so it was worth the extra time for me to reach my goals.

I think it depends on what type of hair you have.
How long it is now. What your routine is. How picky you are about how it looks. When you say you want to avoid cutting are you trying to keep from going shorter? I have gone for 3 years without trims before but I was careless with my hair so it did not work as well as those who are careful. If your hair is long enough you could trim it yourself using the methods here http://community.livejournal.com/feyeselftrim Then you can just do a small snip once or twice or as often as you wish during the 3 years. Or you can use this method and only cut the split ends http://www.angelfire.com/mi/bbubba/LHC/Trim.html Trimming is about only removing what actually needs to be removed and only when you want it done. Do you have to trim? Nope. It all depends on if your untrimmed hair bugs you or not. |

I haven't trimmed in almost 1½ years. As you can see by my sig pic, you can have neat ends without trimming. I've been considering cutting or trimming off and on lately, but I'll wait a while longer. It's easy not to cut; just don't do it. ;)

I have gone long periods of time without trimming. I have usually ended up with LOTS of splits and dry damage on the ends (about 6-8 inches) Before gettign on to hair boards, I would just chop all off. Now I don't.
I have tailbone length hair and have not trimmed in about 6 months. I have been bad and have not done S&D either (oops). I wear my hair up A LOT and wash only once or twice a week, depending on what my hair needs. If you do not want to trim, that is fine, you don't have to. I suggest you do these things to help your length stay healthy. #1 do S&D for split ends on a regular basis (I'd say monthly at least) #2 Condition, condition, condition. Find a good moisturizing conditioner your hair likes, this does not need to be expensive. #3 Avoid using shampoo and soap on your length (unless you get something totally nasty in your hair). The conditioner alone will get your length clean. #3 Keep your hair up, especially if you are prone to get it caught on stuff. Buns and braids are great. This also keeps the tangles at bay. #4 Find an extra moisturizer (leave in) your hair likes for between washing. Some conditioners are good for this but I find what is better to use are Olive oil, Jojoba oil, Shea butter, and Cocoabutter (100%pure natural products). The Jojoba can be especially good as you can add a few drops of other essential oils to it for sent and some for things your hair might like/need. #5 Avoid lots of brushing. Use a good wide tooth comb to detangle. Maybe a narrower tooth for smaller tangles or styling. I personally only use a boar bristle brush before washing after I have oiled my scalp. This helps spread the oils (natural and added) through my length and helps remove any stray hair that didn't come out while combing. Ok, I think that is all the advise I can really give. Good luck, join us and let us know how it is going. |
