Hey Jay,
If you could post a photo of your hair that would be great, you don't have to of course.
You can have them trim just the hemline until the shorter hairs catch up.
Tell them not to even touch the shorter hairs, tell them you are growing out and just want it to be neated up a bit, or you can just leave it alone for now, winter is almost here and you can wear hats and stuff.
I am sure with your thickness and curls you will have stunning long hair

Georgy said pretty much what I would say.

If you go for the trim be firm and be the Boss.

I agree with wearing hats.

The thing with short hair growing out is that it changes so often in such a short time. Try having some patience and see what kinds of stages it goes through. Perhaps the next two weeks it will be nagging you and then the two weeks after that it will be fine and then two weeks later back to nagging?

Patience is the key. Try to stay calm. Because if you aren't calm your hair won't be either. If you learn how to be patient and gentle now you won't have to learn it later like I'm still trying to. I didn't start trying until 10 of my 11 years of growing had passed. Which means I'm not as far along as I should be because I ripped at my hair.

Hope that helps.
