Because of this issue, we have now enabled word filter to screen out these online slang terms so that everyone will be able to decipher (and understand) what the 'younger crowd' posters are referring to. Hopefully this will help curb those hard-to-understand posts w/o having to resort to rules, regulations, warnings, ect. regarding 'acronyms'.
We have added the acronyms which seem to be used most on this forum as well as new ones as they come along. This change will not affect existing posts; only those posted from this point forward (as of 1too/too0/05). We do not have time to monitor each and every post, but will try to keep as good an eye out as possible. After giving this issue some thought this morninig; yes, we're here to wishfully promote proper grammer and all that knowing that teachers amongst others do frequent- however, in a way it is censoring what the kids have to say and how they wish to say it. (Not to mention the fact that we're wanting to welcome them here, not chase them off by being the grammer police.) So hopefully these word filters will work for everyone; posters can continue to type in the words as they are used to and the rest of us can actually read what they're saying. Hope this makes sense and let us know what you think on this issue. Cya! Jenn and Karen -------------------- Jenn - Webmaster / Forum Admin.

I think that's great. I hate struggling through NetSpeak as much as the next, even though I'm part of that 'younger generation.' I always use proper English on AIM, etc., and this is much appreciated.

thank you for your support Shadow...
I saw your post this morning in another thread and it just really got me thinking. Knowing that most everyone is going to be home for the holidays moreso than normal, I figured now was as good a time as any to tackle that issue. Word filter won't catch everything, but it should make it at least a little easier to read. I put in there the acronyms for 'see you', and 'before' type stuff as well as some others I found on a 'net slang' website. I'll add more as they pop up depending on how much they are used and how hard they are to decipher. Now stuff like LOL and TTFN (ta ta for now) I didn't add...they're pretty well understood and well known. BF = boyfriend / GF = girlfriend and DH = dear hubby type stuff I didn't add either. If they become an issue then I will. I belong to several other message forums, a few for expecting mothers and I had to learn all those acronyms as well; man are there alot!! Catch ya later! Same here! I don't really like using shortcuts and net language, so I think this is a good idea! |

Thank you so much! I am one of those people who uses proper English (aside from the accasional lol) and sometimes it's hard to read posts that use a lot of 'net slang.

I also think this is a fantastic idea. I don't use 'net slang' but I do use sms (text messaging) slang once in a while, maybe this will improve my spelling!

You don't like the idea? Well if people are pointing it out, it's probably something you should work on. It's not meant to offend anyone, I'm sure, but to make it easier for everyone to comprehend what you're saying. It helps adults, and even teenagers like me, so they don't have to decode the internet slang. |

That's good!
Except for when I write "numerical two", it always turns out as 'too'. But that's okay. =) |

Can we try to minimize the l337 speak?
for those that don't know - about the midsection of what bezoomny posted. Just.. roughly equivalent of foshizzle -------------------- "It’s going to be a jungle of a day. If I start growling now, I’ll never last." - King Henry II, The Lion in Winter

Hey there...
Thanks for sharing those bezoomny, I'll add them to the 'word filter' right now. Since not everyone who is on this board will see this post unless they're looking for it, that's the best way to do that. I HOWEVER AM NOT ADDING:
Thanks again! Jenn ![]() EDIT: There, THE NUMBER '2' is fixed. NOW, this doesn't mean just cause you can now use the numeral '2' that you can go rampant with the 'you too' and other netspeak involving the numeral '2' replacing for the actual word of YOU. Keep that in mind please as WARNINGS will ensure if it is not followed. Thanks ya'll.... But he loves it. More people call him Moz than actually call him Morrissey. But I do get your point that we're not gonna have in-depth Moz conversations (see, I almost said convos but stopped myself). |
