oh believe me, I meant to sound condescending about the whole "100% HQ" idea :P
as for discussing math, my protection mechanism kicks in pretty fast (glazed eyes and all) once people start talking about _real_ math. I told you I studied enginering, not math :P |

I did computer science myself, so I'm with you....
I'm glad to hear that you have a defense mechanism prepped and ready -- unprotected exposure to real math can really warp you. That said, I have to emphasize that Orage does /real math./ and as such doesn't really deal with numbers. Numbers are so over. He's above them. |

Just FYI -- My plan is this: My Dark Lnight is 20k tnl and once that hits 75, I'm going to become an almost full time crafter (I'll also be working on CoP and leveling my Bard). At that point I'm going to start conducting experiments. That should start up in about a week's time, and I'll make a nice "Experimental Design" post and figure out how we can all organize to do it together. Sound like a plan?

Sounds good to me. And personally, I don't care if there is or isn't a 100% HQ code thingy. I just want to know what works best for HQ even if it's only around 5% better then the norm. That way, I can optimize my crafting around what we find out so I make the most out of my money

It's not always about the money, DH!
It's about knowledge, unsullied by base economics. Mmmhmm. Yeah, more money's good, too. |

Curse you Elowan. To answer your question Odango, yeah i'm working on my math dissertation atm. I actually came up with the Ramanujan haiku out of frustration with ramanujan graph conditions. Edit: btw, i must say i'm notorious for the most hand wavey intuitive talks in our program. I'm all about big picture and let the engineers sort ou the detai...err i mean... and i'm really good at avoiding people's eyes glazing! Mainly cause i try to avoid discussing stuff. Game on. I can tell you from personal experience that Orage's undergraduate degree is in fact in "Hand Waving."
He's almost eloquent with his hands. Still, if he got it in his head to glaze your eyes, I'm sure he could manage :-D PS. Orage, you used ":P" 5 times. I think you're cut off for a while. |

I don't really consider this "shutting down"...your research area sounds pretty interesting actually...optimization with redundancy...sounds like Travelling Salesman or min path sort of stuff with a few more dimensions of restriction... actually I did very little algorithmic type stuff in school...the CS guys got quite a bit, we did like 1 Discrete Math course and that was the closest we got... |

It's time for me to layout how I'm going to conduct this experiment. Tell me what you think, if I'm missing something, if you can help, etc.
The first variable I want to target is the Day vs. Crystal. My hypothesis is that the day's element influences the HQ rates obtained in the following ways: 1) When the day is stronger than the crystal, I will see relatively high HQ rates. 2) When the day is weaker than the crystal, I will see relatively low HQ rates. 3) I will see greater HQ rates on Darksdays vs. Lightsdays. 4) I may see greater HQ rates on the day opposite the crystal on the elemental wheel. * FYI This is the elemental wheel that I'm using * ![]() In order to figure out these relationships, I need to hold every other variable I can think of constant. Here's a list of variables I plan to hold constant: 1) Recipe: I will synth Tsuara because it is cheap. 2) Levels above cap: I have 60 Alchemy and that's not going anywhere. 3) Direction: I will face East, looking towards the Ice-star. 4) Clothing/Moghancement: I will synth naked, and I won't change any of the furniture in my MH 5) Location: I'll do all the synths in front of the counter of the General Store in San d'Oria. 6) Time of day: I will synth from 10-14 Vana'diel time only. 7) Moon Phase: This will be the most complicated to hold constant. I'm going to start the experiment tomorrow (4/14), on Iceday which begins at 10:02 EST. This will be LQM 57%. The next time we get a LQM 57% will be a Firesday on 4/17 at 18:40 EST. LQM 57%s will occur every 3ish days, and I'll be in San d'Oria making Tsuara between the Vana'diel hours of 10-14 every LQM 57% that I can be there. Since I can only collect data once every 3ish days, I would greatly benefit from having other people helping me collect this data. The more repeat experiments, the better. If you would like to try and help email me at eggdishes@gmail.com. The only thing that you'll have to have is 60 Alchemy skill. So there's my experimental design. Let me know if you see anything I'm forgetting, or have any suggestions. Edit: Problems already begin to arise... server maintenance will make FFXI unavailable on the 17th when I want to collect my second data point ; ;... oh well ... it'll just take longer.
