ASHLEY: Okay. Now. What's the scene about? Really? Not the Marines. Not the sunset. What was really happening?
ELIZABETH: A movie shot was being destroyed. ASHLEY: And if you don't think that that's an appropriate ending for this picture, you don't know good writing when it comes up and bites you in the ass. ELIZABETH: [Pause.] It's a scene about a movie shot getting destroyed. ASHLEY: I truly could not have written it better if I had a hundred years. ELIZABETH: The scene is about a movie shot being ruined by three cows. ASHLEY: Yes it is. And you are the boldest director since Welles. ELIZABETH: A film about a group of Marines who join the Corps with an idealized, one might even say Hollywoodized, image of the Marines, but whose fantasies come crashing down around them, is ending with three cows walking into the last shot of the film itself. ASHLEY: And you're telling me God doesn't hang around upstate New York? [REUBEN enters.] REUBEN: Liz, the buses are leaving. ELIZABETH: I'm coming. REUBEN: Those cows were a pain, huh? What the hell, we’ll just matte 'em out when we cut it. ELIZABETH: Matte 'em out? REUBEN: Yeah, you talk to Leonard next week. Takes half a day. ELIZABETH: Why would I want to matte out the cows? REUBEN: What? ELIZABETH: I rehearsed those cows, I auditioned over four-hundred cows. Those were my favorites, they were my first choice. You gotta admit, the camera loves 'em, Reuben. REUBEN: You planned those cows? ELIZABETH: You believe this guy? Reuben, don't you understand? REUBEN: You mean — ELIZABETH: The scene. The scene. It's the whole statement of the picture. REUBEN: The cows. ELIZABETH: Yeah. REUBEN: Oh, you're talking about. . . Sure. I thought you were talking about something else. [Pause.] I liked it. [Pause.] I really did. [Pause.] The buses are heading back. ELIZABETH: I'm right behind you. REUBEN: [Stops before leaving] I think it's gonna work. [REUBEN exits.] ASHLEY: You ready to go? ELIZABETH: [Staring off in the distance.] Hang on... now they're leaving. [Calling off, as if to say "That's all!"] THANK YOU! THAT'S A WRAP! -------------------- |
