A kayaking account - lots of trivial details. I'm bored.

Went the pond behind my house. It's small, skinny. About 0.5 mi long. Just a short walk away.

I used "start on dry land-scooch into the water" method of launching. A bad idea, because when the knife-edged stern is the only thing still on land, the boat is supertippy.

Red-winged blackbirds were making a lot of noise. Didn't see any. The swan's nest was unoccuped.

Cruised to the other end of the lake. There were other boaters there, an unusual sight on such a small pond. Didn't check out the dam.

There is an inlet stream with a sandy delta. It comes from the big lake up the hill. I was afraid of running aground on it.

On the way back, saw a deer picking through the woods. It leisurely ambled away. Didn't think a waterman like me was much of a danger.

Tried to go up the larger stream which is the main feeder into the pond. Limbs obstructed my way. I perhaps could have gotten through if the water was higher.

Got out of the boat by going parallel to the shoreline, and stabilized myself using the paddle. It's best way of getting in and out, I guess.

My craft is a 12.5' "light touring" boat. I can barely fit into it nowadays. It's a skinny freshwater kayak. A lot better than those fat kayaks that turn every time you take a paddle stroke. I hate those. What I really need is a 17 foot boat.

Want to build one of these someday - http://clcboats.com

Saw a beaver today. Wanted to enjoy the last nice day before it gets all icy this week.

I'm typing in a monotone. Just use periods a lot.

Went the pond behind my house.

I'm thinking "Duck pond" (lol) but apparently not.

Red-winged blackbirds were making a lot of noise. Didn't see any.

Odd. There's always a few visible at the stagnant pond across town, behind the college.

On the way back, saw a deer picking through the woods. It leisurely ambled away. Didn't think a waterman like me was much of a danger.

Nice. In the woods I was 20ft. of a small one which was quite aware and wary.

A lot better than those fat kayaks that turn every time you take a paddle stroke.

So... the longer and thinner the better for more speed and also more forward... prevalence of... movement. Funny.

Want to build one of these someday

Yea, we've had snowsqualls. No accumulation in the past few weeks. 1-2 inches of ice tomorrow, though.

It's a good sized pond, but not large. About 20-25 feet deep at the most.

Shorter and fatter = stable, slow and good manouvering (usually they're too eager to turn, this hampers forward movement)

Longer and thinner = Faster, good tracking, but harder to turn.

I'm going on a passenger jetliner in a week. I explore every medium.

I'll try for picturies sometime. If the camera even charges.

It's snowing now.

Wait, no it's not, it's slushing. Or freezing rain. Or something of the like.

Yeah, I guess it's rain. It's supposed to be snowing.

My camera's missing. I'm restricted to poorly lit 320x240 webcam photos of the inside of my room. Boooooo. thumbdown.gif

Is slushing like when the slushy just drips from the sky?

The "neighbors" had a big dammed pond up the valley from us in NY. It was lake-looking but man-made, private with no swimming/fishing allowed.

Yet when a power plant dam throws up miles of ecological drain clog backup, it's officially called a lake. Meh.

I want flowing water in SimCity.

This pond is created by an old mill dam. The river that makes it supported many mills in its time.

The weather is beautiful now. Huzzah.

The upstream dams are actually quite nice and rustic. The Industrial Revolution ugly stuff is further downriver.

Rustic dams? What's that like? The only rustic dam I've ever seen was built by a beaver.

Well, it's made of concrete, but it's small and there's a cute little red building near it. No ugly mills or anything. Nice stonework on the edges.

There were little concrete ones in NY but I didn't think they were rustic... red buildings? Like with locks on a canal?

I don't really know what the red building did. There is a big gear on the side of the dam, but it doesn't seem to be connected to any waterwheels/turbines. It's a big mystery. The town probably knows.

Further upriver, the stream is dammed three times in the space of a 1/2 mile (there is a mill attached to only one of them). And there are two additional ones upstream from those. There are so many, people back then probably built them for fun.

Everything downstream from the red building dam is hardcore Industrial Revolution stuff.

The SC2000 waterfalls are inadequate, then?

Moshassuck River

Man, we gotta use that. When something bad happens, it'll be "Man, that really Moshassucks, dude." Or without the "man" and "dude", that'd probably be better.

Well imd as you've probably gaithered, I've been listening to MC Farside. I like it, it's weird, the score is kind of a mess but it has really good bits. I created the artist pic for the three cooks on Last.fm.

I've been a jazzman lately, but my charts are less jazz-inflected than I would expect.

The iPod submissions thing hasn't been working lately. Boo.

I just noticed that "AEP" thing. I get a bad 1.43.

It's kind of a faulty measure of diversity, though. A person can listen to many genres and have an affinity for a certain band.

Ralph Vaughan Williams. I play something by him on my instrumenti, and researched him today. BOOM. I see him on your recently played. coincidence.

That's tru. Have you tried the "generate your own musicloud" thing? Mine indicate I either listen to mainly sh... cr... really lame music, or people are really bad at tagging it. I'm leaning towards the latter.

For me, if ApologetiX is #1 that's like 15 genres in one band right there. Same with Ween for you pre-reboot.

Yeah, it's kewl that the score came with awesomesauce classical stuff.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantasia_on_a...f_Thomas_Tallis

was in a man's post about

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sehnsucht_%28C._S._Lewis%29

at TORc a few years back, along with someone's Tristan und Isolde and The White Tree from RotK, as music evoking that longing. Kinda dangerous. I'd add The Promise and The Heart Asks Pleasure First from Michael Nyman's score to The piano, and of course The Battle by Harry Gregson-Williams, from Narnia.

Thanks for visiting my profile. I just visited yours and realized where I'd seen that guy in Apocalypse Now before.

I'm pleased with my musicloud.

mine.

It's fairly on target. I wonda how it weighs the results. Can is one of my top artists but "krautrock" appears very small.

I have a meldley of "English Folk Songs." The last one is stirring and fun to play.

I saw solo for the alto trombone (a miniature version of the regular trb.) that had a really cool German name like "Schlickasited" or something.

Nice! It looks really genuine. Not so huge an "alternative" AKA current mainstream rock. And of course, I would never tag anything as just "christian." That's no help at all.

Multiple occurrences among artistes, I say.

Sweet you just made up a word. :munch:

Because Jazz is a subtler, 'higher' art form, and I have grown more and more attached to it, I wonder if I'll start forsaking some of my more popular music. Hopefully that only happens to snobs.

It is hard to navigate the jazz world, and people's discographies are messy. In the 1940s, people didn't work on albums. They just recorded some crap, give it to the record companies, and they would release it in the most moneymaking way.

Ya, strange Indian names abound in RI.

There once was a man from Nantucket...

Good article, but it's got some less than good words in it, including that one that rhymes with a certain TV show host's last name. Ironically, those showed up in some of his less polite films, but anyway. Ahem, ahem.

ANYWAY. I don't mind jazz. I don't like it well enough to try and collect it though. I take what I can get. Though imd, if you can find it, you need "II BS" by Charles Mingus. Excellent piece.

I should buy the album that that track is on. It's a classic.

Read the Mingus Wikipedia page. It's entertaining.

Lol. Only strictly regulated material is really organized. face7.gif Not jazz not indie.

Hunter the punter took a grunt to Mr. Lunt.

Two producers or something on The Nativity Story were listed together in the credits. Ummm.

I have Mingus Ah Um. Many fine quality tracks, an they don't follow the usual jazz cliches.

Jazz has pushed me away lately. I need to take a break from it.

That's what I said about Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus (Which I'll refer to as Mingus x5 in the future). Good stuff. Real good stuff. It's work-on-projects music, I say.

He's a nice, unconventional composer.

I've taken a sharp rock tack lately. Bob Dylan, mostly. Am I the only one who thinks "Like a Rolling Stone" is overrated? It's great, but he's done much better songs.

Blonde on Blonde and Hwy 61 are incredibly fine.

"Tack" means "course" (in sailing terms) for those uninitiated to the word. It's a good word. Just trying to promote it's use.

I randomely went on WP and saw that NZ's parliament or whatever narrowly decided not to make Tokelau a state. C'mon guys, you don't eve have every state represented on your flag.

I should do tp4now despite its deadness. This college just hoasted a TP drive for the community, because food stamps don't buy TP.
