How to Apply
To apply to the Darkest of Times, post the form below in the Applications section, with your character's full name in the topic title, in the following format: Potter, Harry James. Please take note of the minimum word counts listed in the application form. Once your application is completed, please PM one of the admins (Ommy or Chlocelot). If you have any questions during your application process - or at any other time - then please feel free to contact any member of staff.
It helps to try and tie your character into the history of this particular world. Unless your character has been particularly isolated, they will be aware of certain important world events, such as the crash of the Cloudchaser. Your character's experience of them should be included in their history if possible.
Please note: an error that we see regularly on this site, that we are going to be fairly strict on in the future, is with "Weaknesses". When we refer to Weaknesses, we mean the kinds of flaws in one's personality, such as mental weaknesses (bloodymindedness, narrowmindedness, etc), physical weaknesses (disabilities, etc), and similar (phobias, social awkwardness, etc). We do not mean things you have a weakness for (chocolate, a certain lover, a good bottle of wine). These all fit under "likes". With a little imagination, a weakness for a person, or a foodstuff, could easily become a weakness - in the sense that it would become an addiction, or an obsession.
Furthermore, some concerns have been raised regarding the inclusion of "Sexuality" in the form. Like most sections in this form, this is intended to get you thinking about your character, rather than to restrict you to any kind of label. You can be as specific or as vague as you like (or you can leave it out completely). You are welcome to express it in any terms that you prefer, or that your character would use to describe themselves. Furthermore, characters are not obliged to stick to this: sexuality is a flexible and complex thing, and the chances are that many characters will explore the bounds of it. This site is open to any and all sexualities, and out-of-character discrimination will not be tolerated.
For an idea of the kinds of applications we accept, we recommend looking at some of the following
Syrillina Clarissa Savernake
Gregory Everett Ames
Athena Griselda Morgan
Once your application is submitted, a member of staff will review it, and you will be informed of our decision.
Freeform Applications
We do not accept freeform applications from first-time members, and we are very strict with freeform applications when they are submitted. If you want to use a freeform application, then we expect a creative application. Some good examples are:
Arthur Constantine Hucklesworth
Carmelita Skeeter
If a current member wants to submit a freeform application for a new character, then we recommend talking to an admin first.
