i was going to go, but Mike Stewart big band was for free as opposed to 40 bucks or whatever it was. I used to like that stuff, but from what ive heard its pretty much an excuse for chops and technique rather than subtlety and, dare I say, musicality.

to be fair i havnt listened to a lot of him.

you probably want me to disagree, but i disagree

i never listened to dave weckl, aside from appearances with Michel Camilo, the closest i came to that was Vital Information with Steve Smith, and I still listen to that.

In my playing, the technical aspects, which aroused varying responses during year 12 at school, come from the fact I have listened to bebop heavily since year 11, and I still do now. Bebop is largely what we study at uni, I havn't had to change what I listen to, because it's encouraged and studied.

"congratulations, the university needs piano players like you"- I havn't had to change much at all.

I'm not trying to argue, but I suppose I know what I listen/listened to.

i'm not saying that in a rude way. I didn't want you to disagree... you said it... you know what you listen to, not me.
I am just saying that uni seems to have changed what you listen to. In year 12 (not being critical or whatever) as you said, you listened to more bebop and didn't place feel or sound or subtelty too highly. Just nice to see you're broadening your musical taste!
Shame you mainly do mainly bebop though, but I guess Jazz is pretty broad..

Anyway. my point is... I didn't mean that rudely like you took it, I was just trying to use a silly/sarcastic tone but I guess the net isn't too great at getting that across and I guess given our level of friendship I should have just not said it.. sorry.

smile.gif civil...civil.

I haven't heard any dave weckl... I don't think... well, I am sure I have but I cannot think of any.

As for complex musicians like Parker, I respect that music completely but I am more into music that has a mix of fast but still maintains musicality. I really dig Cannonball Adderly for instance because whilst he definatley goes off on those bebop rants, it isn't all fast and it is broken up with awesome feel and phrasing.
If you want an awesome Piano player (not Bop) try Kieth Jarret... fucking awesome! the complex layers and awesome blending makes it a great listen and perhaps a little challenging.
I am really into Latin always have been, always will be. From playing in a latin ensemble this year, I have come to understand that there is just so much cool latin out there. The percussion in it is just awesome. I think the thing that I have learnt from this year is that I should treat my instrument like a percussion instrument (no no, not bash the shit out of it) and play those strange far out rhythms, muck around with where I place the beats. Thinking about it like that makes music a lot more pleasureable for me. Buuuut as my sax teacher and I agree, there is nothing better than just playing so fast that you can't think anymore... I call this playing in the zone. I cannot think and my mind is just completely blank. I guess this is my type of meditation, everything just flows... I love it.

its strange cos weckl is considered to be one of the best drummers in the world cos of his amazing and free technique, as well as the fact that he is considered as one of the most 'musical' drummers in the world, he isnt jus crazy play as complicated as u can type of drummer...

Dave Weckl is indeed an awsome player, and as The Great Man has already stated, his work with Michel Camilo is fantastic, as is his playing on the GRP Allstars live recording...

...but his solo albums (with his band) don't tickle my fancy anymore. It's not music I would listen to lol. For me now, it would be liking it just because he's a good drummer, not because I actually like the music, and I certainly don't think that's how it should be. Appreciation is one thing, but liking music without actually liking the music is another (I'm not incinuating anyone here is doing so). Just think of all the guitarists in a Dream Theater crowd.

Music is a purely subjective matter, even if the participants have been conditioned to like it.

Theres a bit of confusion as to what Bebop is. And I suppose there is a broader debate as to that definition as well.

I consider bebop the music of subtlety and substance we're talking about. Dave Weckl, Vital Information, Victor Wooten, don't play bebop.

Charlie Parker, for the largest part, invented the basis of Bebop, that being it's complex harmony and re-harmony, super-imposition, and use of chord extensions as melody etc. John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Cannonball (for saxes) all played 'bebop', if not playing at the characteristic fast tempo, using the kind of complex harmony and melody which was developed in the Parker/Gillespie/Powell groups, and taking it to new levels. Rather than fast tempos and double-time phrases defining bebop, it is better defined by its highly developed harmony, which in turn gave rise to new levels of tension, colour and expression.

Personally, I don't think that long slow phrases mean you are playing expressively, nor does the fact you are playing extended and fast lines mean you are not. Cannonballs solo Autumn Leaves from 'somethin else' is a good example.

Latins cool, im a fan.

Keith Jarrett, among many other things has played bebop.

everythings cool

I didn't really mean long phrases have to be expressive and short stuff can't be. But lets face it, most of Charlie's works are hardly expresive, they are more technical.
