Jonny doesn't have to sing a lyric everytime he uses his powahs, but he at least has to think of/hum a song/melody. I probably won't get around to really explaining it, but in TS his powahs were connected to his emotions, just like Raven's. So the best way for him to express them was through song.
As for MS!Jonny, it's basically the same principle. He doesn't consciously control the nanomachines in his body. For whatever reason, his brain can only send strong enough messages to the nanomachines through song. As for the actual lyrics Jonny sings throughout MS...I dunno if I'll point out the artists/songs...maybe at the end. However, I've made a youtube playlist called MS Mix that has nothing but the songs used in MS that'll be updated as the fic goes on.
