Hehe... sorry QJF.... I couldn't resist. That's sometimes what it feels like to me when buying Mark's music though. You can afford a meal, but you're not sure whether it's worth the extra cost to have the wine and dessert as well. Anyway, I guess you saw the story of my Privateering purchasing woes in the other thread. The good news is I do at least have the standard edition. I still haven't seen anywhere locally that has the deluxe or super deluxe versions, although it sounds as though it might just be due to production delays and they'll be available soon. And in any case, I've got a lot of new music to listen to. I might just decide to forgo dessert for now. As for an appreciation of the album, I find it always takes a few months for that to develop with Mark's work. I'll have to listen to it many times over and really let all the songs sink in. Of course that won't stop me from offering a preliminary review of the album in about a week's time! But for now I'm just going to listen and keep an eye on the forum here as various things come up.

| QUOTE (3Pints @ Sep 6 2012, 05:03 AM) | | QUOTE (qjamesfloyd @ Aug 25 2012, 01:58 AM) | | I have just pre-ordered the 3 disc version from Amazon.co.uk I could'nt afford the supper deluxe version right now. |
The "supper deluxe" version? Is that sort of like the "full meal deal"? Appetizer, the main course, then dessert, and a nice carafe of wine to wash it all down? |
Oh you spotted my deliberate spelling error To me there is no excuse in having to wait so long for the super deluxe version, it should arrive within a day of the official release date in my view. I pre-ordered the deluxe edition from Amazon.co.uk but it came on 5th, when I could have gone to HMV and bought the same album on the 3rd, for more or less the same price. Anyway, I have listened to the whole album now, and want to hear it a few more times before my big review on Monday, but for now I will say I have found the wealth of material overwhelming, and it may take a few months to really appreciate the full album, and that is because Mark has spoiled us with songs, history may record Privateering as Mark Knopfler's blues album.

Don't worry about "rubbing it in" 3Strats. Bring it on! Seriously though, I'm happy to hear what people think about "Privateering" even if I don't actually have it yet. One of the great things that age has brought with it (for me at least) is patience. I'll be able to get to a shop this coming weekend and as a kind of reward, it's going to cost me less than what I would have paid to order on-line. So that's just fine with me. I'm sure I could find a copy to download if I was desperate, but I'm a firm believer in supporting musical artists (even if they're already successful). In the meantime, bring on the reviews!

| QUOTE (MarkKnopflerBelgium @ Sep 2 2012, 04:31 AM) | I got the album two days ago, here in Belgium, and I'm loving it. First listen was a bit confusing, just because blues and more folky MK were mixed, I thought it'd be better to just split it, since there are 2 CDs, but that was just initially. Great album! Really laid back, some great lyrics and songs. Others more bluesy, with great guitar solos. But that's not what I look for anymore. I love the style MK has in Seattle, Privateering, Redbud Tree, Haul Away. Anyway, you can't compare, they're too different, but still GREAT! |
Hi MKB, Thanks for the early review! Wow, I'm envious. It seems a couple of people around your way managed to get the album before the weekend. I wonder if it was released earlier there? September 4th is the release date here in Canada and I won't be able to get to a shop until sometime later in the week or maybe next weekend. I was going to order on-line but they wanted an additional $9.00 (CAD) for shipping, bringing the total (with taxes) to about $44.00 for the deluxe CD!! I have listened to the 3 preview tracks offered on the other site an heard the live versions of a few songs from the last tour, but that's it so far. I'm excited to hear it in it's entirety!
