Gryphons

The gryphons of Sekkai are similar to the gryphons of fantasies, with a few major differences. They are of the traditional eagle-lion mix, with the head, wings, and fore claws of an eagle, and the hind legs and tail of a lion. The Sekkai gryphons range in size from 1' 6" from beak tip to tail tip, all the way to 2'6". They are considered as domesticated pets, and have an intelligence that slightly surpasses that of a dog. With their ability to fly, they have proven themselves useful, and can be found with the occasional lucky person who finds themselves with an egg. The Sekkain army itself possesses a stock of trained messenger gryphons which are capable of mimicking very basic sentences in addition to carrying written letters. They are slightly rare, though, and are highly valued. They are loyal to whomever raises them, staying with them, so it is not possible to take a gryphon from their owner.

Being omnivores, they eat anything from mice to local fruits, depending on personal preference and whatever is available. They can eat both meat and fruits, and like to have a variety of foods in their diet.

Whomever raises them from the egg is then their owner, and though they have no magical bond to speak of, nor any magical abilities, they remain loyal to their owner unless mistreated.

Gryphons, being mostly domesticated, have no main habitat, but have evolved so that they can survive in all but the most extreme of environments. Their coloration ranged from anything in the red-orange color range, and in grays and browns. Occasionally you will find a different colored gryphon. The rarest colors are the deep red, black or white gryphons.
