Aeris saw the motion before it came.
Don't turn away Axle, I want to see your face when she DIES!
Her keyblade lanced back into her hands, but it was too late, the blow had been delt. A wrenching pain shot through her chest where the keyblade had struck her. It was all she could do not to cry out in pain as she bowed her head, her loose strands of hair covering her face only slightly...but it was enough. She wouldn't show the pain she felt if she could help it. Aeris vaguely noticed that her hearing seemed muffled all of a sudden, her vision blurry around the edges. A muffled cry sent a cold shiver down her spine as she heard the distant thunder of foot falls on metal.
As the keyblade was dislodged from her chest, the only thing keeping Aeris standing had been removed. Clutching the bloody and throbbing section of her chest where the keyblade had been, she crumpled, falling to her knees, then her right side, curling slightly around herself.
Axle.... she whispered, so even she could only barely hear herself.

Axle's keyblade met steel, Latus was a fast one in truth. Instead of pushing back on the blade or moving out of the way, Latus stood there staring back into the eyes of Axle. There was a moment of silence between the two as they simply stared, eye to eye. A smile crossed Latus' face as he pushed back on the blade. The strength behind the shove was strong enough to throw Axle off balance. With a slight chuckle, Latus stepped back into a pocket of darkness and vanished, leaving only his unearthly laugh.
Axle just stood there, panting slightly. The adrenaline still pumping through his veins. Gasping he whirled around, discarding his keyblade which clattered noisily on the metal roof. In two strides Axle was by Aeris' side. Slowly, he removed the metal armor from Aeris' chest. At the shirt level he found that the puncture, while real with the armor, failed to actually puncture Aeris' skin. Axle froze... Latus had done something he didn't even realize. He had unlocked Aeris' heart. Whether or not she had survived was another matter all the same. Only one other person was known to have survived having their heart unlocked and he was a legend.
Lifting her body off the ground, he sat down beside her, leaning her head on his shoulder. As Axle sat, several tears welled up in his eyes. Slowly he stroked her hair, as if doing just that would bring Aeris back to him.
I'm so sorry Aeris. I should have told you sooner...so sorry.

Aeris only barely felt herself being lifted slightly and rested against Axle's shoulder. In her mind, she was somewhere dark...and her hearing was as if she were listening to some one on the other side of a long and echoing tunnle.
I'm so sorry Aeris. I should have told you sooner...so sorry.
That voice...somewhere in the depths of her, she recognized it. It was a voice that ment something to her...but what? What did it mean? What did he mean to her? And what did his words mean? He was sorry for not telling her something....sorry for what? None of it made sense. Aeris...that was her name...so certainly he was talking to her, right?
The swirling darkness around her made the young woman feel slightly dizzy. Why was it so dark and cold here?
So this is what death feels like?
She mused to herself out loud. As far as she knew, she was alone in this darkness...no one could hear her. Or so she thought.
Aeris' eyelids fluttered slightly as she looked around the darkness in her mind. Her body was still warm, and at first it seemed as if she wasn't breathing at all. Slowly, though her breathing was shallow, it became obvious that she was infact breathing.
Axle....that was the man's name. Now, who was he to her? The name had significance...it pulled at her...what was it? A flash of a noose, the bright sun, and ocean breeze....a face that stood out among the crowd.
Aeris staggered backward slightly, her hand to her head as the memory hit her. The man had saved her....she had nearly died that day.
Another flash....crystal ceilings and white walls....fear of the unknown, a blade...no, a key?...a...key blade?
Don't worry, you'll do fine here, you'll see...
I'm not so sure Axle.
Aeris' breathing swiftened slightly as her mind reeled with the memories that were flooding her vision....her mind.
This man, this Axle....they were friends....but, she felt...more...she felt....love?
Axle...

So many questions flashed across Axle's mind. Why hadn't he told her sooner? Why did Aeris have to die? How would he go on without her? He had closed his eyes as small trails of tears made their way down his slightly dirty face. As he sat he realized that he had never felt this way about anyone before. If it was a different person Axle would just walk it off, bury his dead companion and move on but Aeris, it just wasn't easy with her. As a matter of fact, it was impossible.
Every now and then he thought he could hear her voice, calling to him. Axle opened his and looked down at her, Aeris' face calm and serene. He almost jumped when he saw her mouth move, mouthing his name. A smile spread across his face and he wrapped one of his arms around the girl.
You gave me quite the scare, girl.
The tears still flowing down his cheeks.

Aeris stopped walking as she heard a voice....his voice. Not knowing from where she'd heard it, or even what he had said, the woman looked around, feeling almost frightened for the first time....there was something evil about this darkness around her that she had failed to notice before and she desperately wanted to get away from it.
"I don't belong here" she muttered to herself as she glanced around the swirling darkness. "I need to get out of here...but how? Where IS out?" she wondered.
I can't understand you...Axle....where are you? I'm so lost here...I don't know where out IS...
She stated to the darkness around her, hoping that he could at least hear her, and that he somehow might be able to help. As Aeris stood there, her arms wrapped tightly around herself as if to keep away the cold, she vaguely felt several drops of water on her skin.
"Water? Rain?....I can't imagine it would rain here..." Aeris muttered, glancing around. What...HOW....was it raining here? "Maybe it isn't rain...but then....what is it?" she mused, waiting for any sound that might lead her in the correct direction.
So frustrating! I can't find my way...
She was about to finnish her sentance, when a bright red glow formed to the side of her. Turning to look at it, she noticed that th glow was not only red, but suffused with gold and silver. A comforting aura was surrounding the beautiful glow, like a sunset, or sunrise, that she had yet to ever see in her life....she trusted it.
"Please be the way back...." she pleaded quietly to the light, and started walking towards it.
Aeris' eyelids fluttered slightly, but her eyes didn't open, even at the sound of his voice. Her breathing was still very shallow, but at least she was breathing steadily. Every once in a while one of her muscles would twitch as if she were dreaming about using them in an everyday type of motion.
I can't understand you...Axle....where are you? I'm so lost here...I don't know where out IS...
She whispered after a few moments, her brow furrowing in a look of dismay and confusion.
So frustrating! I can't find my way...
Aeris whispered, her face slightly more pale and frightened than it had been only a few moments before....as if something had frightened her.

Axle's smile fades as he listens to Aeris talk. She sounded so delirious and her words scared him. She would have to find her way out, but she wasn't alone. Axle doubted she would ever truly be alone again. He puller to himself, a little rougher this time around, as if his letting go meant that she would escape him.
Aeris, don't be afraid.
Axle's voice was calm and gentle.
I'm right here with you, don't you give up on me now.
He didn't know what was going to happen, to either of them. All Axle could do was hold on tight, hoping that moment would pass. She had been like this before, dazed and confused. It was when Aeris had first come to the Skylight Sanctuary. She had no idea what she was or what was going to become of her for that matter. He remembered it all so well, he had stayed by her side for hours on end seeing as his was the only familiar face. Another tear welled up in his eye before rolling down his cheek and pooling on his chin. A few moments later, it fell onto Aeris' fine hair.

Aeris' words sounded muffled under the night sky... maybe it was because he had her head pressed against his chest. He sat up a bit straighter, pulling her hair back and out of her face. Quickly he brushed a tear out of his eye, not good to let her see him crying.
I thought you did, you darned fool. You gave me quite the scare.
Axle stood, making sure not to let her drop, and propped Aeris' still limp body against the small concrete blocks on the edge of the rooftop. Making sure she was secure he stood back reviewing her situation.
You sure look worse for wear, but I think you'll make it.
