Title: OOC Debate "Conference on De-colonization"

South Africa - July 20, 2007 07:17 PM (GMT)
OOC: wtf...fascist Spain allying with communists against an institution they're part of? (Ever heard of Spanish Sahara, Spanish Guinea, etc?) Thailand threatening the British Empire with war? Indonesia has an independent army? again, I say...wtf...get real

Yugoslavia - July 20, 2007 08:07 PM (GMT)
ooc: lots of the fascists were purged out of Spain when Franky saw how the war was going. It is called realpolitik. Spain isn't a part of this yet, and they'd have to give up there colonies in the forseeable future. There is another thread which Spain wants to help develop their colonies.

Thailand is going to wage war and 'liberate' the British colonies in SE Asia.

Indonesia has been recieving weapons from the USSR.

Spain - July 20, 2007 08:35 PM (GMT)
OOC: I want to improve them so I can get more money out of them. Liberating them is something else, really.

Yugoslavia - July 20, 2007 08:47 PM (GMT)
ooc: than no conference 4 u!!1

Spain - July 20, 2007 09:17 PM (GMT)
OOC: Well if you could agree with some minor liberalizations. I could control them as a puppet.

Thailand - July 21, 2007 01:31 AM (GMT)
ooc: I joined in what game time was over a year ago. In that time, I've expanded my military and received substantial Soviet equipment. A war against a British Empire severely weakened by World War Two isn't altogether unrealistic.

Besides, Thai peoples have always been Asian nationalists. They already beat up the French in the region in 1940!

ooc: I already did. It's not bollocks. Read the topic on the treaty signed with the Soviet Union. With such concessions offered to the SU, Soviet aid poured in enabling me to expand my military massively and get around NATO embargoes. Besides, the elected civilian leadership you referred to has been deposed by a military coup which very soon will return Phibun to power.

OOC: Yes, and the most Eurocentirc pro-British PM in Thai history just suddenly switched sides to the commies? In this year, he's supposed to be RETURNING land he got from France, not trying to defeat it. He's supposed to be getting chummy with the British, Australians, and Americans, not siding with their enemies. You picked the wrong country to go on a rampage against colonialism.

Thailand - July 21, 2007 02:05 AM (GMT)
ooc: He is no longer in power. He was deposed by a military coup that will bring Phibun back in 1948. What's so hard about this to understand?

Besides, we're not supposed to run this game exactly as history went. That would be boring. If you want to whine about the lack of right wing players, I'm with you on that one, but we can't and musn't follow history to the letter.

OOC: With a British and American military presence in the country? Yeah fucking right. Khuang Abhaiwongse is the closest thing you could get for another year, and he was essentially a puppet of Seni Pramoj.

I'm not going to bother to reply to you if you can't be civil.

Oh, no, declaring war on the world's superpowers and going on an extremely unrealistic rampage of pro-communism and anti-colonialism is much better. Besides, Phibun was a fascist who constantly referred to the "evils of communism" and the "Soviet mongrels" in his speeches for why Thailand should ally with imperial Japan.

Like I said, we're free to run our countries as we want. I'd like more right wing players in the game, but other than the superpowers no one should have to run their country in a certain way. As the SU said, fun is more important than realism.

How do you know I'm actually going to go to war? How do you know this isn't just sabre rattling?

The issue is that I have a very hard time believing that a country with it's recent roots deeply embedding in fascism and with a long history of friendship with the British would suddenly swap sides. All I'm asking for is more realism, and then I can shut up.

Well you're not going to get that much realism. We can run our nations the way we want. Only the superpowers should be obligated to take on certain roles, though it would be kind of cool to see a capitalist Soviet Union and a communist USA!

Yeah? Then you're not going to stop hearing it from me.

Keep this out of this forum, then. Otherwise, feel free to realize that I'm going to ignore this tripe from you from now on.

The good news about my position is that France isn't going to be stupid and not defend her colonial possessions well. Sabre rattle too much and you'll find yourself in a kind of trouble that will have you begging for the Soviet Union to save you. ;)

But no seriously, I don't plan on having France punk out and be stupid in their decisions. There won't be the weird constant instability that was seen in the 4th Republic. In fact I'll probably be looking to change the political atmosphere to something much more 5th Republic-esque, much much much sooner.
