We just got back on Wednesday after spending three weeks staying at the Green House in Georgetown, Penang Island
Our hosts, Alan and Pat, own three heritage type terrace houses situated side by side which are available to rent, short or long-term. Each are exactly the same inside and out.
We first heard about these house rentals on Penang Travel Forum, and we're very grateful because the one we rented was perfect for us in every way.
Location is ideal. Very short walking distance to bus stop, shops, restaurants, hawkers, Komtar etc, plus all the sights and sites in Georgetown.
The houses are in a quiet residential lane. No through traffic.
The property us very well maintained and has all the mod cons.
Upstairs there is one main bedroom, a small bedroom, bathroom with toilet, laundry, clothes drying area.
Downstairs a living room, kitchen, and another toilet with wash basin.
It's also spotless. A cleaner comes in once a week, and she does her work so well once a week is enough. Would have to be the best cleaner we've ever come across.
A/c in the living area and main bedroom, plus ceiling fans in kitchen, living area and bedrooms.
Because we trek back and forwards to laundries a lot while on holidays, it can become a real chore so we really appreciated the little laundry with modern washing machine off the bathroom and the indoor drying area. Given the high humidity while we were in Penang, we were really surprised by how quick the clothes drying time is. Everything would be dry within 1/2 a day.
No safe for storing valuables however we found one unnecessary as the house seems very secure.
A mobile phone is necessary as there is no landline. Pat told us how to get the cheapest phone calls, and although i can't remember the exact price, it was so cheap that for the first time ever we were able to call home a few times.
The only (small) negative we have is that the bed is smaller than we are used to sleeping on. My husband got bad backache and after 2 nights he chose to sleep on the floor for the three weeks we were there. The floor wasn't ideal but at least he had more room to spread out on. Another guest in one of the other houses had the same problem with backache.
Pat and Alan are very helpful unobtrusive landlords. They've lived on Penang Island for 14 years and i don't think there's anything they don't know that a tourist needs to know.
They even had a lovely birthday cake waiting for my husband as it was his birthday on the day we arrived
I think it would be very difficult for us to go back to staying in a hotel room. We loved the privacy and the space of renting one of the Green Houses, and at AU$400 pw it was very affordable for us.
We recommend the Green House! :)
