Title: Trophies? Pointless?

JBlokeUK - November 21, 2009 01:02 AM (GMT)
I think I'll start this off by asking what the difference is between PSN Trophies and XBox LIVE Achievements?

When I had a 360 I was not a fan of achievements at all. I just found them pointless. Call me old fashioned but what happened to enjoying a game for what it is, with the 'achievement' being that you completed it?

The gamerscore thing also made online gaming on the 360 uncomfortable for some I think. Imagine playing in a room online on Halo 3 for example and being the person with the lowest gamerscore, then being called a 'noob' and other names because of it? I'd bet my life this has happened.

Trophies on the other hand don't add up to a score as such, which may answer my first question as to what the differences are?

Trophies/Achievements are good in that it can make a game last longer/more of a challenge, but people will buy shit games just to get the trophies/achievements, this is what I don't understand, some people are obsessed it seems by them.

At the end of the day trophies have good and bad points, but FOR ME I don't see what the fuss is about. I'll just enjoy a game for what it is, trophies or no trophies.

Krisaim - November 21, 2009 01:30 PM (GMT)
Hmmm what you my think is a shit game is not what everyone else may think is shit. All about opinions.
I went to see Terminator Salvation and loved the movie. My son said lets get the game. We got it from ebay for £20 and I'd seen the bad reviews. I played it and enjoyed it but I only saw one other person on my list playing it. I think any game is worth a punt at under £20 if it's something you like. I like shooting.

Trophies are a personal thing. It's not shoved in other players faces like a Gamerscore is. If people want to see my Trophies they have to look for them. I got a Gold Trophy last night for getting through a level in COD Classic without taking a single hit, not easy but very tense and something I wouldn't have done had it not been for the Trophy so that tells me that I'm getting extra miles for my money at the same time as doing something new. ;)

No bad points whatsoever in Trophies imo and I'm not sure what you think is bad??

ps AK and myself did 50 hours or so co-op to get the ressi plat. :) Great fun online and we'd never have done all that without trophies. Fact. :sparta:

I agree with you there mate, but I'm sure I heard the trophies in Terminator Salvation are easy to get, now can you honestly say that that wasn't a factor when buying the game?

And that for me is the bad thing, that people will buy a game just because the trophies are easy to get, regardless of whether it's a good or bad game.

Like I said it has it's good and bad points, but you know me mate, I hated the XBox LIVE achievements system, and the trophies system isn't all that different, although for me it is better because of what you said above about the gamerscore being shoved in gamers' faces.

Krisaim - November 23, 2009 10:35 AM (GMT)
Like I said, we loved the film and wanted to play the game. Simple. I'm buying the blu ray today.

tbh that statment is way off as there are loads of games that are VERY easy to get the platinum. Terminator was a shooter based on the movie that we liked so we tried the game.

PS3 trophies has a list and it says how easy they are etc. TS is the only game out of all of them that I've had so really that should tell my motives when we got it. ;)

For the record I traded it in for £25 so I made a fiver from getting it.

Trophies are great, if you don't like em you don't have to try and get them. :)

Fair enough mate, it was just an honest question, and wasn't a comment directed at you in a malicious way, but I do think that a lot of people would buy a game for the easy trophies, which is a bad thing I think as it could cause developers to be lazy? The games I have have some good challenging trophies to get which I do like.

And yes, shame you can't get trophies watching blu rays or Play TV

At the end of the day I just wanted to give an honest opinion of what I think of trophies, I like them in some ways but would be perfectly happy if games didn't have them.

Krisaim - November 24, 2009 09:13 AM (GMT)
Self satisfaction and prelonging the life of the games do it for me. :D

AK - November 24, 2009 09:39 AM (GMT)
The reason I like trophies is that it encourages you to do more in games that you normally wouldnt.

For example on Operation Flashpoint were going to play through on hardcore which is REALLY difficult.

Without trophies I wouldn't have done it so it means I get more out of games :D

Krisaim - November 24, 2009 07:07 PM (GMT)
............and Ressi on the hardest setting. :D

JBlokeUK - November 25, 2009 10:09 AM (GMT)
Maybe I'll appreciate trophies more once I get off this mobile broadband and get a stronger connection for more online gaming?

All my trophies I've gained have been by accident really, in that I don't really chase them, I just happen to earn them as I play through the game.

Krisaim - November 25, 2009 03:01 PM (GMT)
I try not to look at them until I've done the game. Then go back and try and get them. Like the one I said about in COD.
Update Burnout then see if you don't like trophy hunting. ;) Great fun trying to get the harder ones. :)

Doddy_884 - November 26, 2009 07:51 PM (GMT)
i got a problem with my trophies whenever i sync them it gets to 8% then says error (80022a07)

AK - November 26, 2009 08:10 PM (GMT)
Yeah that happens to me sometimes too mate.

Keep trying or wait until the morning when PSN isnt as busy and its normally fine

BradleyUK - January 14, 2010 05:21 PM (GMT)
I do believe that trophy/achievements are pointless and not needed in games because you don't need to be rewarded for what you doing ingame, No one cared about getting rewards during the last generation.

People actually refused to play games like Valkyria Chronicles and Metal Gear Solid 4 (both released pre trophy PSN), because they wouldn't be "rewarded" for it. Also people do buy terrible games just for the trophy/achievements!

Core Gaming >>>>>>>>>>>>> Meta games

David jaffe opinion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9rtEfKO8Xw

Krisaim - January 14, 2010 05:45 PM (GMT)
Hmmm if what he's saying is right then how did games used to sell.

Tell you how, if you finish the game you unlock informat ammo, unlocks that get you different things to play through the game again. Trophies etc are the same sort of thing but the new generation.

They are here to stay so people like him should just put up and shut up.
I'm sure he'll moan if his games sell because people want his trophies.lol ;)

Devildamo - January 14, 2010 10:36 PM (GMT)
lol people still complaining about trophies well there here to stay for good :D

jaffe should be telling us about his next game instead tho and im wondering if it could be a new twisted metal game!

Krisaim - January 15, 2010 11:26 AM (GMT)
Yeah a twisted metal game. Maybe he will leave trophies out if he hates them so much. Lets hope his next game is fantastic as he's said people buy shit games for trophies. Could turn out quite funny.lol

Does that include me mate? At the end of the day people are entitled to an opinion, and I actually think he has a point, particularly what he says about people not buying great games like MGS4 because they won't be ''rewarded'' for it.

Think about this - If Microsoft stopped Achievements in games, would games sell as well as they do now? Probably not imo.

However.....I am slowing warming to Trophies, because I finished Uncharted 2 a couple of weeks ago and I have started it again on a harder difficulty setting, something I probably wouldn't do if it didn't have trophies, and it is getting me to work harder/play more to get certain trophies in the game.

But I do stick to the opinion that there will be some people out there who won't buy a game that doesn't have trophies or buy a bad game just because it has trophies that are easy to get. I don't doubt this at all, but I am warming to trophies...

If you like..........yes. But not in a nasty way and if you read what I said my point is valid..........as if you like is your point but they are here to stay. Who's who to say what games are shit? yes we all say it but what I may think is shit the next person may not. Like you said, opinions.

To make this topic then say you're playing through U2 again just proves my point. They make a game longer and therefore you get more play time for your money. Us=winners. :D

JBlokeUK - January 20, 2010 09:50 AM (GMT)
Like I said mate, I am warming to them, but I do think they have there bad points in general, like people not buying games because they don't have trophies, but then I guess if they don't then they could miss out on a great game, MGS4 a case in point.

It is great playing through Uncharted 2 again though, started playing Resistance 2 again as well :D

Krisaim - January 20, 2010 10:27 AM (GMT)
If you want to get your teeth into something m8 you should look up Borderlands (FPS RPG) at some point. :D

JBlokeUK - January 26, 2010 10:06 AM (GMT)
Yeah looks good mate, but having to wait till it drops in price a bit here first, just bought a house so need to save the pennies, at least until GT5 and FFXIII come along :D

Back to the trophies thing, I have also started playing COD MW2 again but on Hardend, with the plan to give Veteran a crack when I've done Hardend, something I wouldn't of done if there was no trophies, as I usually buy a game, complete it, then sell/trade it (unless the online is great)

I think I've started to see more the differences between trophies and achievements on XBox Live. I am only getting trophies now for my own reward, and not just to boast online at how my gamerscore is higher than everyone/someone else's ;)

Trophies seem more about individual gain rather than trying to get more than friends, which I prefer.

Hit the nail on the head m8. No one can see them unless they look so it's just a beating a game thing.....for me.

JBlokeUK - February 2, 2010 11:47 AM (GMT)
Well after last night I can safely say that trophies are a good thing (finally  )

I finished COD MW2 on Hardened and got the gold trophy for doing so, and I have to admit it was very satisfying and has got me itching to give Veteran a go :gun:
