Title: Dirt 2 demo

jamestheace - August 20, 2009 03:52 PM (GMT)
dirt 2 demo should be on the psn now!

Krisaim - August 20, 2009 06:25 PM (GMT)
Thanks m8. Downloading.
I'm looking forward to that and the WW2 flying one.

JBlokeUK - August 22, 2009 11:20 AM (GMT)
So what is it like? Anyone tried it?

Haven't had the chance to download it yet, what's the file size?

Krisaim - August 24, 2009 10:33 AM (GMT)
Fantastic Graphics BUT the car felt VERY floaty with no waight. (the Baja one felt better but I want a real rally game)
In WRC the cars feel heavy. I hope the rally parts in GT look as good mind.

jamestheace - August 24, 2009 10:49 AM (GMT)
yeah the trailblazers in Dirt 2, which the eclipse is in the demo, are based on pikes peak versions of the same car. these cars weigh less than a ton, compared to rally cars which can weigh no less than 1250kgs. The rally tracks and cars in the game are probably the best, shame they werent featured in the demo

Krisaim - August 24, 2009 01:51 PM (GMT)
Thanks for that. It's funny how you can feel it in games. All in the mind I guess with how the cars responding on screen.

James have you seen the PSP version? I'm deffo getting that as It's only £15 at Argos.
Is it any good?

ps. I bet rain and night races look stunning m8.??

jamestheace - August 24, 2009 03:32 PM (GMT)
yeah handling can pretty much make a game, the rally cars are easily the best and weight shift is amazing when you get used to it, although you can do it most cars, use opposite lock like rally drivers use in real life, so swing the car in the wrong direction into a corner and then opposite lock it to bring it around, its great!

if im right i think the psp version maybe based on the wii code, shows just how powerful the psp is.

As for rain and night, there isnt rain races, however there is plenty of times when water splatters on your windscreen, if your in head cam you wont be able to see anything on your windscreen then your wipers will come on and clear it off! it looks ace. and night races are astonishing! the baja track thats in the demo looks amazing at night, with all the windows lit up on the ship

Devildamo - August 25, 2009 12:01 AM (GMT)
The baja car was alright to drive but the other one was abit floaty as kris mentioned, couple of peeps have said its quite like grid and i think it is abit like it.

i think i prefar the old colin mcrae games to the latest ones, gonna have to say nfs shift i think i will go with that out of the 2 as i think it will be more realistic which i seem to like in my driving games :)

it is being made by the devs that did GT2 and not the devs that did the last nfs game! soo i think it will turn out pretty good!

jamestheace - August 25, 2009 10:00 AM (GMT)
i played NFS shift at E3, graphics are really nice, and has all the presentation of a sim, but plays pretty much like all the other nfs's. Reminded me a lot of most wanted

Krisaim - August 25, 2009 10:57 AM (GMT)
How strange, I saw NFS Shift yesterday for the first time and have to say I thought it looked very good.
I think it was the developer vid on GT. The track was Spa. Graphics looked good.
Saying that they can all move over when GT5 revs up. ;) Hope it's this year.

In my opinion Most Wanted is the best Need for Speed they've made so that's a compliment.
But it's become a circuit racer now instead of an open world cop chase game.
Spa you say kris? That's my all time favourite track in the world ever.

I was one of those who said that Dirt 2 instead of being like Dirt 1 but improving, has become Grid offroad.
I hate the handling of the Mitsubishi Eclipse in the demo, the Baja truck felt ok, guess it has to do with the slow speed you're racing at.

James, do you work for codemasters or something?

Krisaim - August 25, 2009 01:09 PM (GMT)
Just look. :O
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/gc-09-need-for/54424

This is a must have for me. :D

Devildamo - August 25, 2009 03:32 PM (GMT)
yes i watched that the otherday kris it's looking pretty good :D spa is a great track!

it will deffo be alot better then the last two nfs games and could be one of the best in the series overall.

Most wanted i hear alot of nfs fans like that one but myself i never gave it a real chance but i will be giving shift a good play through!

I cant wait for GT5 aswell :D

jamestheace - August 26, 2009 07:54 AM (GMT)
yep im a games designer at codemasters. yeah i agree that most wanted was probably the last good nfs, but EA are almost trying to sell it as a sim and has presentation of a sim, but plays as an arcade. Yep GT5 should be amazing, 1000 cars is just crazy! and at least GT5 isnt robbing the rewing feature from grid, unlike forza 3. One thing that doesnt look too good in GT5 is the damage, when you compare GT5s damage to grid or dirt 2 it loooks pretty shocking, but i suppose GT has never had damage before until now, so im sure it will improve as they make more games with it in

Krisaim - August 26, 2009 10:47 AM (GMT)
tbh damage is only seen when you crash or hit something, so I hope not to see much damage.

Best damage I've seen is WRC PS2. ;)
I'll try Dirt 2 when the price drops a tad.

Devildamo - August 26, 2009 08:02 PM (GMT)
we will have to make a final judgement of shift when the full game drops next month guys, i think it will have all sorts of options to make it more like arcade or feel more like a sim im sure there have the options for both sets of fans but who knows!

james is what we played of the dirt 2 demo the final build? or will some things be different in the gameplay gfx etc etc , im pretty sure i notice abit of slowdown during a race but did not happen in every race tho.

jamestheace - August 26, 2009 11:34 PM (GMT)
nah the demo was done a couple of months before the final build, so may not have had the final optimization and graphical touch up. So the retail game may look slightly better. There has been 2 reviews of Dirt 2 so far, both in playstation mags, and has got 9/10 so far in both

Krisaim - August 27, 2009 12:35 PM (GMT)
From what you've said and the look of the demo those scores are deserved.
I'll pick it up. :D

BlindMonkey - August 27, 2009 06:52 PM (GMT)
I might get Dirt 2 just for the menu. :P

jamestheace - September 1, 2009 07:33 AM (GMT)
review scans

BlindMonkey - September 1, 2009 07:52 PM (GMT)
I got that magazine, good review.

Although they claim the handling is perfect, the demo makes me feel otherwise.
I hated the handling in Grid, too floaty, twitchy and centre car pivot.

The cockpit view in both Grid and Dirt 2 is horrible to use because the steering wheel doesn't match what you're doing with the controls (unlike GT5P which is perfect).
Full lock is 90 degrees in Dirt 2, so trying to turn a little bit throws the steering wheel all over the place too erratically, it's distracting.

Going to try the demo more, maybe Burnout spoilt me.

Ok James, here's a question:

Is there a steering sensitivity setting in the full game?

Because it's way too twitchy for me in the Morocco Mitsubishi Eclipse, if I can tone it down, I'll buy the game. maybe :P

jamestheace - September 1, 2009 11:05 PM (GMT)
there isnt actually a centre pivot point, in chase cam the car is directed at the front wheel axis, to get rid of the centre pivot. Which wheel do you use on the ps3? the logitech g25 is the best for the ps3, costs a hell of a lot though. The eclipse in the demo isnt really that good of an indication to the twitchyness of the cars, the trailblazers weigh less than a ton, and are 600BHP! so they feel the twitchiest. The rally cars are by the far the best in the game, maybe worth trying them before you buy the game

manclad - September 1, 2009 11:07 PM (GMT)
liking this game(demo) think this is a must for me.

BlindMonkey - September 2, 2009 12:21 PM (GMT)
I would love the Logitech G25 and a good setup, it was £99 on play.com at the weekend.

I've got a Logitech GT Force that came bundled with GT3, although i rarely use it.

Krisaim - September 3, 2009 09:01 PM (GMT)

Devildamo - September 8, 2009 05:20 AM (GMT)
kris's bro did mention he knows someone at codemasters to me last week when we talked about dirt 2,,

he said he did the sounds for the car engines etc.. would that be what mark knight worked on for dirt 2 james?
