I WILL DEFEND, I WILL FIGHT. I'LL BE THERE WHEN YOU NEED ME.
WHEN HONOUR'S AT STAKE, THIS VOW I WILL MAKE.
”The smell is atrocious, I agree. I cannot imagine why anyone in the right state of mind would want to take up a permanent residence here. I do not plan to come back anytime soon, that is for certain.”
Demetri let out a soft laugh, the sound blending in with the sound of the water rippling and falling off the edge of the cliff. "We are in agreement; those who occupy this land can hardly be accused of being in their right mind." He pressed his lips together in amusement. "However, the fact that they tend to keep their psychosis isolated to one corner of the world is a small favor, I suppose."
She wasn't turning and running from him. Perhaps she knew it was useless to attempt an escape. Still, Demetri had seen many a desperate vampire lash out irrationally, making one last attempt at staving off the inevitable, no matter how lost the cause. The woman before him was either in possession of a warrior's spirit, or too stupid and foolish to take him seriously.
Or perhaps she found him as intriguing as he found her.
"It's probably best that you not return to this area," he continued, nodding slightly. "You would not want to be mistaken for an associate of the coven that lives here, nor marked as a person who might potentially be interested in relocation." Both options would leave this woman open for the killing, whether by the Volturi's hands or someone else's. The Cullens had a reputation as off-kilter in the vampire community. Though most vampires chalked them up as insane, but harmless, like a distant relative everyone knows is off their rocker but still beloved, there were others in the community who had a score to settle. One of the Cullens had held a leadership position in a Mexican Army, another had married and produced offspring with a human, and others had murdered nomadic vampires which had left behind resentful allies of the fallen seeking revenge. Not that Demetri cared about such things, (though he was disgusted over the human), but he would hate to see this woman slaughtered for a mistaken association.
The realization that he cared about the future of this woman, and had essentially given her a warning intended to protect her gave Demetri pause. He could only imagine the mocking he would receive if his fellow guard members knew of his fascination with this tracker-mercenary, and that this intrigue had gone a long way in sparing her life. Felix would have killed her for sport before she could speak. Strike that, he would have tortured her mercilessly until she begged for destruction. Jane would have as well. He knew that no one would understand his reasoning, and that his leniency would be viewed as weakness. He would need to come up with a plausible stretch-of-the-truth to explain his actions, if they ever read his report from Washington.
Then again, as one of the eldest Senior Guard members, Demetri owed very little explanation to anyone, and most of the time remained unquestioned by the others. This could definitely be used for his benefit.
