HAWTHORNE | MADDOC

*If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn't. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn't be. And what it wouldn't be, it would. You see?}

    name: Hawthorne Lewis Maddoc
nicknames: Professor H, Thorn, Mr. Maddoc, Mr. H
    age: 26
    birth date: January 27th
    class: Theater
    gender: male
    sexuality: Heterosexual
spirit: The Mad Hatter, Alice in Wonderland
    power/s:
Hawthrone can do things that he shouldn't be able to do, things that can easily be described as bending the laws of physics. Pulling a large object out of a small space, pouring water into one cup, and it goes into another, or even into an object that's full of holes, and it doesn't fall through. Things can happen to him physically, and it doesn't quite effect him, such as getting hit on the head, and it doesn't seem to phase him.
Of course, he's not all powerful. Really, it's only like cheap magic tricks. He really IS pulling a cake out of his hat, but if he tries to pull out a HUGE object, he cannot. Not only that, but it has to be something he owns. He doesn't have a room in his house full of stuff, either, so if he doesn't own something, than he can't pull it out of whatever he's trying to pull it out of.
As for being injured, he really can only take bumps and knicks without getting hurt, and not like getting shot, or stabbed. If someone hits him on the head with a mallet, chances are, he'll have brain damage, but if he hits his head while he's under a table, it really doesn't phase him as something that should hurt.

    hair: Brown
    eyes: Hazel
build: Nothing to write home about. He doesn't work out, so he's not amazing in the body department. He's just your average 26 year old male who occasionally enjoys McDonalds.
    height: 5' 9"
fashion sense: Hawthorne has a very...eclectic wardrobe. He is, of course, a huge fan of hats of any shape and size, and often times wears old blazers that have a rip in the elbow or hole in the pockets. It's not that he doesn't care about his appearance, he's just got so much going on in his head, buying new clothes is the last thing on his list of things to do.
overall appearance: If one were to ask his students, "How would you describe Mr. Maddoc?" most of them would have to just smile and say, falling apart. His shirts are sometimes a throw back to the seventies, with loud prints and obscure colors. The man never really ties his ties correctly, and his face is always needing a fresh shave. In spite of his rather disheveled look, there is almost always a smile on his round face. His wildly messy hair gives him an approachable look for kids that make them feel like he's more like them than like the other teachers.
play-by: Andrew Lee Potts (yes yes, I know. Cliche to pick for the hatter. XD)

similarities to the canon:
    - I think your slipping - He is a bit touched in the head. As much as he tries to get past it, from time to time, he'll say something or do something that can come across as really being crazy. He takes medication for the mental issues he has, but from time to time it lets loose.

    - What the hell just happened? - He'll be on one tangent, and then completely turn around and change the subject completely. Some days, he'll make every student switch chairs, or not even have chairs at all!

    - One lump or two? - He loves tea, so much so, that he even has a set in his class room that is almost always brewing or still steaming. He'll invite his students, or other teachers to drink with him, and even loves the whole "tea time" set up. Don't sit down at his table without being invited though. That is terribly rude.

    goals:

    fears:
    - That one day, he'll go completely mad
    - Being completely alone
    - Being abandoned

    secrets:
    - He is terrified of the curse. It makes him feel like he's always been destined to be mad.
    - He is afraid that people see him as too childish/immature because of his...condition.
    - For once, he'd like to be taken seriously, even if it's over something pointless.

    overall personality:
He is, for all extensive purposes, mad. But don't worry, it's not something that's in your face all the time. No. Sometimes you can be around him for a day or two and he'll seem completely normal. You can sit down and have tea with him, or enjoy one of his classes, and things can seem quite peaceful.

But things can't always be of a sound mind with Hawthorne. Sometimes, he'll be completely mad. Nothing dangerous, no. He wouldn't go and attack someone for no reason, or fly off the wall, but he would offer you a tapestry to eat, or maybe start ripping the pages out of your book, and put them in another, attempting to fix it for you. Occasionally, he'll act very childish at times, and be overly happy one moment and then extremely angry the next. On days like this, it's not uncommon for a sub to be seen teaching the class instead of him, if he can catch it in time.

When he's not tweaking, he's fun, a little charming, and very enjoyable to be around. He's very big on getting other people to smile, or to have a good time, and is quite the host. He doesn't seem to be very interested in his own personal safety, though, and many question if he has any self worth at all. It's not that he doesn't care if he lives or dies, he just thinks that there are other people out there that are much more important than he is.

    place of birth: London, England
    hometown: San Diego, California
    parents:
Lewis Maddoc | Father | Hatter | Deceased
Caroline Maddoc-Tenniel | Mother | Clothes Designer | Currently living in California
    siblings: N/A
    other: N/A
    pet/s: N/A
    overall history:
Hawthorne was born into a loving, and maybe a little bit overly artistic, family. His mother was a clothing designer and fashion editor for a magazine, traveling all over America and Europe to get new insight on the ever changing clothing industry. She met Lewis on a trip to London, having to interview him for the unique hats he made for celebrities and whoever could afford them. The two of them hit it off instantly, both a little bit eccentric and looking for someone to connect with.

Caroline moved to London after they dated long distance for awhile, and in nine months Hawthorne was born. It really wasn't a rough life. He'd watch his mother write articles or work on dresses while his father spent hours working on hat after hat, HATING school when he had to leave his family. His mother got a new job in California when he was eight and the family up rooted and came to America with little incident. It wasn't until he was eleven did his parents start to notice how...odd their child really was. Little things at first would happen, like they'd ask him to get them something, and he'd pull it right out of his pocket, or he'd do something that normal people shouldn't be able to do. They didn't think much of it, really thinking "No, this can't be possible. It's just our imaginations".

The older her got, the worse things became. He began acting more and more...strange, never really fitting in, and quite often leading other kids off on wild adventures that got someone in trouble, or badly hurt. He always came out without a scratch though, and students began picking on him. He was different, he caused problems, and he was never quite where he needed to be. He'd say and do odd things, and was getting tired of having to keep his quirks in the dark from everyone like his parents told him to. They pulled him out of school after he showed someone that he could pull his bicycle out of his pocket. Luckily, no one believed the child except for Hawthorne's parents.

He got his letter to come to Nemare Academy when he was thirteen, and his parents, terrified of how hard their child's life would be without a school like this, sent him without thinking twice. He never really cared for the fact that he was the spirit of the Hatter. As he grew older, he always felt like he was forever on the path of being the very strange, odd boy who said and did things that no one really should. It wasn't like he didn't have fun when he was in one of his moods, but afterward, when the party was over, he began to feel lonely. It was nice being around others like him, though, and as time went by, he learned how to get a better grasp around not only his abilities but his personality. He does take some medicine to help him keep himself in check, and is desperately trying to get a better hold on his "sickness".

When he graduated, he couldn't imagine going back into the real world, so he quickly worked his way into becoming a professor. He enjoyed the stage and always loved making hats like his fathers. The theater department was practically his one true calling, so he jumped at the chance to teach. The only time he's left since then was when his father died of a heart attack, but since then, he hasn't really tried to travel anywhere else. He's been a "professor" here for close to three years now, and really has no plans on leaving.

QUOTE
When Sophie knew she was going to visit her brother, she didn't exactly get herself spruced up to look like anyone worth taking interest in. She didn't think that William liked seeing her dressed up. It just reminded him more that she wasn't just his little sister, she was a woman, and a woman who had needs that needed to be met. Oh she acted like she didn't, but she would like to have SOME sort of physical relationship with someone. She was human after all.

She leaned closer to the door, watching her brother teach his class, a little envious of him. He was always so well put together, teaching college while she hung out with forth graders all day. They worked on things like reducing fractions, and learning how to spell, where his class were discussing the more serious aspects of the world.

Maybe she put him too high above her, but still. Her whole life, her mother had said, Listen to your brother, Sophie. He always knows what he's talking about. And for the most part, Sophie believed he did.

But today, she knew that this might be a rather... unpleasant meeting. She had just finished baking him a pie, apple to be exact, and really, she hoped that it would soften the blow of her telling him she was interested in someone.

Now, everyone, and she did mean EVERYONE, told her not to mention her relationships to her brother. Obviously, he was controlling and hated seeing her with guys that "weren't good enough for her", but the last time she kept a relationship from him, the poor guy ended up beaten up, accused of rape, and sent packing. She didn't want to see that happen again, especially because she actually was really looking forward to giving this guy a call when she worked up enough courage.

She moved aside as the class was let out, students flooding out the doors, barely glancing at her as she came stood there holding a pie, wearing a simple blue dress and red shoes. She slipped in as the last student was talking to him, and waited patiently, looking up as the student finally left. Sophie baked quite often, but rarely did she ever drive across town without calling unless she needed to talk about something she really didn't want to talk about. She could have called, but then he probably would come to her house, and she hated it when he did that for some reason. As much as she loved him, she always worried that he judged her and her house filled with pictures of her class, and paper mache volcanoes. She never asked him how he felt, but that's what she worried about. So, she would spend the gas money to go and meet him first, bring him a pre apology pie, and break the news in person.

"Hey" she said, giving him a smile, her heart hammering in her chest, afraid to start right away, "I brought pie!"

She set it down on his desk, looking at all the papers, "Wow...busy class?"

Maybe she could make small talk first before she had to tell him what she really didn't want to.
