My No.2 son (press officer for Greenpeace, Brussels) has asked me to forward this message – so over to you with a signpost to his request for speed please.
All the best, Vini
You probably heard about the European Court of Justice ruling on GM contamination recently (www.foodnavigator.com/Legislation/Food-industry-warned-on-potential-costs-arising-from-GM-honey-ruling).
Greenpeace sees this as proof that GM crops can't be introduced without knock-on impacts for others, including beekeepers. There's very little you can do to prevent contamination once crops are grown, so we're arguing against EU authorisation to keep our honey, and food in general for that matter, free from this kind of genetic contamination. Counter to the hype from the likes of Monsanto, Dow etc GM crops do precious little to boost yields and meet food security questions, so we see them as an unwanted addition to the European environment (thankfully, only two are authorised).
Anyway, we want to hear from UK beekeepers, especially those who rely on honey or beekeeping for a living. Can you circulate this request among your peers? It's fairly urgent as the situation is likely to come to a head soon.
I'm not a commercial beekeeper Vini, but I've read the link.
The GM crop companies should be made financially liable for any subsequent costs incurred by others.
An analogy is, me painting my house and the paint splattering over your car and you having to fork out the money to clean it up.
Hit 'em where it hurts I say. It may help bring this whole sorry saga to an end.
