The Giver was fucking awesome in my opinion. I found the length satisfactory myself.
One of the few books I've enjoyed that came from my school curriculum. 7th grade, I think it was.

Well it's not that the place itself is shitty, it's just that the people in the place believes that ignorance is bliss. The people's ignorance itself is what makes it believe that the rules that they have is contributing to their perfect society.
Also I believe that the book actually has 1 or 2 sequels to it.

Not exactly sequels, but books related to the same world and similar themes!
