You bet your antlers! Talk about close-ups... I had no idea he wore contacts until I saw that photo.

The older they get, the more Mark & Mike look alike, IMO. They both look like Mom more than Dad.

My first reaction to that was that he forgot to eat his All Bran that morning. laugh.gif

Yep - when somebody asked him once what he'd like to change, he said his eyesight. He dryly stated he had to wear contacts because, in his words, "it's pretty drastic." I wished I could get the nerve to ask him what kind he wears because you never seem to see him blink a lot like most people who wear them and I've never known him to have one or both contacts to pop out during a game - not even when he got hit in the head by that line drive.

When I wore my contacts, I had these great soft lenses that didn't make me blink a lot, unless the pollen count was high. That's why I ultimately gave up wearing contacts...they were too uncomfortable at certain times of the year.

I'll have to post the picture I have of Mike wearing glasses. That's when I knew for sure. Unfortunately, it's saved on a disk I left at work.

I've had Acuvue contacts for a few years, and I have next to no trouble with them. I don't think I blink a lot either. I'll bet he has Acuvue. And I don't blame him a bit for having contacts. They block the view of that face!

I guess back when I tried to wear it (I only wore one for my left eye), they hadn't quite perfected the "comfort zone". Thanks for the info. I might give it another shot now that they're very much improved. My sight has changed since then anyway and it's actually better. I guess if you hang around long enough, it makes a complete circle.

If he wore them while pitching, he'd really look like a Stanford grad. wink.gif

>I'll have to post the picture I have of Mike wearing glasses.

I'd love to see a picture of Mike with glasses. I didn't know he wore glasses, either, until I read it in an interview a few years ago (I'm sure we all read it in the same interview. Steve Serby, I think). I didn't know David Wells wore glasses, either, until I saw a photo of him wearing them at a book signing. He looked just like Boomer--but with glasses. Maybe a little more serious.

(I tried to quote someone's post above. I have no idea if I did it right).

Do you remember when Greg Maddux used to wear glasses, and they'd show him sitting in the Braves dugout with those little glasses on? He looked like an accountant! laugh.gif

(I tried to quote someone's post above.  I have no idea if I did it right).

FYI, if the buttons confuse you, then the easiest way to quote something is to copy it and paste it. After that, just type the word "quote" and put it in brackets [] before the first word of the sentence/paragraph you want to quote, and then type "/quote" in brackets after the last word of the sentence/paragraph. If you want to quote someone's post, you can click the "Quote" button in the upper right corner above that post.

Back on topic...I remember Mike commenting after he got hit with that Sandy Alomar line drive in 1998 that he was surprised his contact lens didn't come out when he got hit.

Oh yeah - I sure do! His teammates called him "Professor". I think some of them still do.

Then there's the Charlie Sheen version, "Wild Thing" from the movie Major League. yikes.gif

Carole - I think I remember the photo you're talking about. Mike was just stepping off the team bus, looking very "Ivy League", but down after they'd been bounced out of the play-offs. I must have saved it at home because I haven't found it here.

I'd be surprised if they DID pop out of his eye... aren't lenses kind of stuck to your eyes? They don't usually come out unless you pull them...
