ModernDriver Design Analysis
2005 Volkswagen Jetta

Volkswagen claims it's new Jetta is “All grown up. Sort of.” In essence, the model’s new tagline may be more fitting than the automaker originally perceived. While the new Jetta has certainly grown in terms of size, standard features, and even performance, it’s a downgrade from the outgoing model in regards to design. The new Jetta is larger than than last year’s model in nearly every dimension, but the excess weight is quite apparent in appearance. Moreover, the edgy, linear shape of the outgoing model has been replaced by a softer, less attractive look reminiscent of Toyota’s Corolla. While the Jetta is remains a compelling small-car alternative, it no longer boasts the styling that once made it unique. Essentially, Volkwagen’s transformed a standout model into a more common-looking car. All grown up? Well, sort of.

2005 Volkswagen Jetta | Design Analysis
1 Rounded front-end is clean in appearance, but unremarkable in terms of design.
2 Oversized emblems lend for a strong brand identity. The Jetta’s enormous chrome plate looks upscale, even if a bit overbearing in doing so. The upcoming Passat will share this feature.
3 Rounded, common-looking headlamp units lend for a weak, overly-soft front-end appearance and hint at Toyota’s Corolla. We favor the outgoing model’s square, linear looks.
4 Elevated ride-height lends for a weak stance.
5 Designers have succeeded in masking the Jetta’s front overhang, which is relatively trim for a front-wheel-drive car.
6 Trim-less door panels are clean and sleek in appearance. Subtle character lines effectively disguise an otherwise slab-sided design, although the outgoing model’s sporty and attractive wheel-flares haven’t been carried over.
7 Forward-leaning window frame is awkward in appearance and aesthetically unappealing.
8 Poor wheel-to-body relationship further weakens the Jetta’s stance and lends for Corolla-like proportions.
9 Blocky rear disagrees with soft, round front-end.
10 Lengthy, upturned rear overhang looks awkward.

Final Rating
2/5

Well, Bimmer, this is my first post here. tongue.gif

I noticed this from C&G and clicked on the link too, but I'm here.

I think you did an excellent job. I definitely agree with the downgrade... especially when compared to the previous Jetta. I actually happen to have a poster of the Jetta GLI and Golf R32 on my wall. biggrin.gif

No really, the new Jetta looks really nice, and stylish, especially in this picture. Oh yeah, whoever designed this, what is with that #10 rear overhang, that looks horrible. Anyway, the rest of the car isn't that bad at all, the front looks really nice I think with that styling stated in #1. wink.gif

The Jetta, IMO, is really nice. I've seen a lot on the road. It looked beter than I expected. I just hope the Golf comes to Canada early!!!

I saw one of the new Jetta's the other afternoon. That large chrone grill was so reflective, that I could see the asphalt reflected in it. At first I thought something was very wrong with the front of the car. Then it inched forward and I could see that it was reflecting the street.

The new Jetta looks like a great improvement over the last model, but something doesn't spark me about it! For some reason, it is a pretty expensive vehicle, offering mere I-4 powertrains and compact space for a midsize vehicle price. I'd rather buy an Altima or 300C than this...it is too small, and looks awkward.

First post here. Just wanted to add that I love the new design although I feel the new Jetta looks much better when it's about 1" lower to the ground -

Nothing at all like a Corolla IMO
Very Audi-ish in design. Great job VW!

I really like the design of the new Jetta. I see it as simple, but nice, and smooth. I like how the silver grille stands out no matter what color car you have.

And black looks good on any car, and this one counts too.

I'll agree wiht mnost of your points. winking0024.gif

The one thing I disagree on off the top of my head is the C-pillar. Although it is a bit too Saab 9\3 in appearance it has a very elegant angle to it IMHO.

You can't deny that it's much more sophisticated and euro looking than the last one...
