((Anyone wanting a firelizard, just bring your character to the weyr, and post which number you want. I've randomly assigned a colour to each. For now you can choose one each for up to two chars a roleplayer, but it depends how many people want to claim 'em. I may up that. I'd prefer characters coming to have no more than two firelizards already.))

Kisa wasn't sure where the Firelizard clutch had come from. It had simply...appeared...on the Hatching Sands one day. The Weyrdwellers had figured that the mother must hide whenever anyone came in, because nobody had any idea what colour she was or where she'd come from.
She had gone in to check on the eggs, which Lilath had assured her were definitely holding something alive, that morning, just out of habit. Since she'd discovered the eggs there on one of her afternoons with Mikail, she had gone in to see what stage they were at at least once a day. It had become part of her routine, and her one-turn old son was showing an interest in them worthy of a weyrbrat.
However, just then, he was not with her but with his foster mother Cliana, and she was alone. The shells had been getting noticeably harder recently, and she had thought, based on experience form her own dragon's clutch, they were nearing their Hatching Day.
Now, it just so happened when she went down to check them, she caught the betraying quiver of one of the eggs.

Just in case it had been her imagination, the Weyrwoman had paused, crouching and looking at the eggs intently. As it turned out, she had not been mistaken. One of the mottled, beige eggs gave a slightly more prominent wobble, and she stood abruptly.
They'd need interested people...and meat to feed them...
Lilath, can you alert the Weyr?
What about that dratted firelizard of yours? Kaiph could do it.
Don't be ornery, shard it! I need you to do this now. Not next Turn.
...Fine. Weyr, there is a clutch of firelizard eggs soon to hatch on the Sands, if anyone's interested. The last was obviously to the Weyr at large. The Queen did not sound too happy about it, but Kisa didn't care.
Should she stay to supervise? Well, it'd be chaos if she didn't. So she settled down, glad that the sands weren't as hot as they were when a dragon clutch had been laid.

Egg 1 -- M'fael
Egg 2 -- K'rion, Sea
Egg 3 -- Aria, Marble, wingless
Egg 4 -- K'tara, Star Female, wingless
Egg 5 -- Kisa/someone
Egg 6
Egg 7 -- Ledia - Dawn female

(Poor K'tara... wrong place at the wrong time. I want the first egg to hatch though as a surprise please)

K'tara had been kind of bored one day and while walking along he noticed someone interesting. They were heading into the hatching grounds while was intriguing... What could be in there that makes the Weyrwoman check it out this time of the year. He didn't think there were any dragon that had laid lately.

Hands in his pockets, K'lern style, he followed Kisa into the grounds just to notice her looking at something solid in the sands. Not that he needed to be there but curosity got to best of the poor scout rider. He walked over to see what was going on. Finally though some words came into his head.

"Buddy stay out of the hatching grounds..." K'tara looked up after his dragon started to warn him. But he didn't pay much attention to his blue, who tended to be rather dramatic.

"Hey Mame whatcha looking at?" He walked over and glanced down at what she was looking at. To his surprise and slight horror he noticed a clutch of eggs... And one was starting to hatch...

((Aww...poor K'tara ^^ I'll give 'im egg 4))

Kisa, surprised to hear a voice, nearly jumped out of her skin when K'tara spoke. She must really be losing her touch if she hadn't heard him following her. Or...she had just been really absorbed in going to check on those firelizard eggs. She hoped that was it, because if she'd missed that, then she was REALLY getting soft.
However, keeping her features straight, she stood and nodded to the seven little eggs tucked into the sand.

"Firelizard eggs," she said. "I'm not quite sure where they've come from. They don't seem to belong to any of the Weyr firelizards, and I haven't seen the one that laid them. I figure that they must be wild."
The Weyrwoman shrugged indifferently. "I check on them. That would be why I'm here."
She quirked an eyebrow, guessing that he would've asked if she hadn't answered.
"They seem to be hatching."
That was accompanied by a casual folding-of-arms across her chest.

"Would you--" She was about to ask if he'd like one, but the clutch beat her to it.
One of the eggs hatched. It looked no different than any other firelizard egg, but what came out of it...
With a little creel, the shell fragmented and the occupant stepped out on wobbly feet. The hide proclaimed it a Star, and a check would prove it to be female, but Kisa saw something was wrong.
"What the shard...?" She stared at it, eyes large. It looked like a firelizard. But it had no wings--just little stumps where they should be.
That wasn't right. Chirupping, it staggered towards K'tara, looking for food.
"That was fast," she said dryly, surprised by how quickly it had hatched.

(Thats horrible... How could he turn that little one down now...)

K'tara realized what was there and almost turned tail to leave. He had never been a fan of the winged rodents and knew they needed a lot of work. His own dragon was a pain at times and he wondered why anyone would want something more.

"Thats nice and all but..." He knew what she wanted to ask and he didn't want one. But the one that hatched caught his attention. The poor little thing came out missing wings. Almost as soon as he was about to leave the area he turned back around and dropped to his knees.

"Oh my... Its born mutated..." He couldn't help but grab a piece of jerky he kept in his pockets out. He wasn't hungry and there was no need for him to keep it anyways and instead handed it out to the little stunted critter.

The small crippled star crawled up and grabbed the small piece of meat rather eagerly just like any other newly born dragon. Then quickly she started to eat flashing her eyes happily. K'tara's heart started to melt at the sight of the little one. He reached out and started to pet her as she continued to eat.

"I guess I can't let her die... That would be horrible of me." He said this with slight hestitation as he wondered if he really wanted a pet. But now that he had fed her he had to keep her.

((Now...I post, and we wait.))

Kisa watched the younger 'rider's reaction to the whole Firelizard-clutch business with interest. As if her thoughts had summoned him, the oft-absent, oft-useless Kaiph appeared from between and she spared a moment to remember when she'd Impressed him, not long after arriving at the Weyr.
Shards. He must he about 5 Turns old!
But the thought spared was brief indeed. She had other things to think about.

Like the little firelizard who had hatched without wings. She'd never seen anything like this mutation before, and the poor creature looked...Well, like she was completely unaware that there was anything different about her.
She shot K'tara a sidelong glance, wondering what he'd do given his evident intentions of leaving.

It was fortunate that he had something to feed it, because Kisa certainly didn't have anything with her just then...but she could see a drudge hurrying across the sands with a bowl of meat, and she indicated K'tara and the little Star with a jerk of her chin.
"He needs it," she explained, then added, "Thank you," as the waif-like creature put it down and fled.
Then she devoted more time to studying the Star. Her initial impression had, it seemed, been correct. Minus her wings, she looked to be normal. Perhaps a bit undersized, but stars were small anyway.
Kisa let out a slow breath.

"I think she'll live," she said aloud.
"And I suppose you can't. That would hardly be decent of a dragonrider." Not that she was a big fan of Firelizard either. But she wasn't exactly a big fan of children, and look where she was now...The Weyrwoman gave a slight roll of her eyes. Hopefully she wouldn't end up with another. Of either!

OoC: You know, I only have one character with a firelizard. I believe I shall join! Hm, May I have egg 7?

Ledia heard about the firelizard hatching and hesitated to go. Ever since her brush with death during the plague she had stayed in the candidates barracks and didn't go out much. She had recovered from it but the whole ordeal had left her weaker than ever. The healer who had been over her had commented that her heart had been weakened by it and she would have to take it easy... For at least two years if not the rest of her life. Ledia didn't really do a lot to begin with but when she had asked about staying a candidate since she missed the hatching he had told her that the excitement might be too much.

So she hesitated to go, both because of the excitement and because she hadn't really interacted with the people of the Weyr for over a year. But she did end up going. Ledia peeked her head out of the barracks, as if expected someone to jump out at her. She scurried through the halls, pausing every once and a while to look around. She was seeing most of these site for the first time in a year after all since she never went to the hatching sands, why not look around? She was in no hurry.

She reached the sands and looked in. Seeing a few people inside already, she nervously tapped her nails on the wall. One of the people, the one who had been holding a tray of meat, turned around and came back. Her heart fluttered in panic which worried her, would that hurt her? She ducked behind the wall until she passed.

She looked in again and saw the wingless star. She was instantly enchanted. She didn't have a dragon and may never but she could have a firelizard. That made her step around the corner. Besides, she was lonely. She kept going. Coaxing herself all the way, she made it to the sands and stopped just short of the clutch, looking at the new hatchling. She wasn't sure what to say so she just stood quietly aside, not meeting anyone's eyes.

The little critter had scarfed down his snack like it was nothing and demanded more food. He lifted an eyebrow rather confused like wondering where the food was going to in that little thing. As a person came in with some more food he took a piece and said 'Thank you' before turning back to the little firelizard that was now up on its hindlegs grasping his riding boots with its front claws.

"Aren't you impatient? He handed the meat down which she instantly grasped ahold of and fell backwards. She hit the ground with meat on top of her and was eating from a rather odd position. This forced K'tara to laugh slightly as he gave a glance over to Kisa.

"You know these things really are more adorable than they seem. I think I'll name her Aesha." His spirits had lifted rather high as he watched the Flitt finish off the food and then seem rather content. He reached down to her to pet her stomach and then watched as she clung onto his gloves. He lifted his arm and the small creature hung on just to shift its weight around and sit on top of his arm. Then she scurried up and onto his shoulder just to curl herself around the back of his neck. He laughed against as her tail slipped down the front of his shirt to feel warmth.

He noticed another girl in the room who seemed to be rather shy. Well that wasn't needed now was it. The junior dragonrider walked over with his new fashion accessory with a smile and a wave. "You know you can see the eggs right? Its good that your the first person it sees when it hatches." He offered those words hoping she would head over by Kisa and wait for the next to hatch.

"Uh, right," Ledia said, a little flustered at being talked to. She had been watching the acrobatics of the wingless star and didn't want him to think she had been staring at him. She looked quickly away and down at the eggs. If she stayed a candidate, would standing on the sands feel like this? Anxiously awaiting approval from some tiny creature that had never seen you nor you them.

Slowly she moved forwards, looking sidelong at the Weyrwoman. She seemed to be in charge of the clutch more or less so she would have to get permission.
"I... I would like to impress-" she said, cutting off when she thought she said something wrong. Her statement sounded a bit too presumptuous, she had no idea if she would impress at all.
"Try to impress," she amended, looking back down at the fascinating little eggs.

((-winces- Crud post comin' right up...Could someone pick an egg for me? I don't know who I want it to go to, but I think that I'd like one.))

Kisa, while waiting for anyone else who might be interested in an egg to show up, occupied herself in a mixture of watching the eggs, and watching the little Star swarming around the young man's shoulders. It amused her to see the change in attitude towards the little creature.
One of the other eggs was showing signs of cracking, now, and she turned her attention to it once she'd noticed the increase in movement from the corner of her gaze. Faint cracks started to run across the surface, but then it stalled, and after a moment's longer watch, she decided that she dared to take her eyes off it for one moment.
Kaiph, her irritable Blood firelizard, hopped to the sand and shuffled over awkwardly to sort of...squat...by the clutch half-buried in the sand.

Well, she wasn't about to complain if he was going to play nanny for a while. It meant that she could greet the girl who had approached.
She didn't recognize her, so figured that she had to be a Candidate.
Since she was a Candidate (she reasoned) she had best not scare her--so Kisa gave her a welcoming smile. Welcoming smiles were not her strong point, but she had had to learn one in her years so far as Weyrwoman, or else she wouldn't have been all that successful. Anyways, the girl looked scared. It would have been hard to be mean.
"Here." She nodded to the eggs. "You're welcome to. And I'm sure that you won't have any trouble."
Firelizards, after all, were hardly discriminating.

The egg that Kisa had been watching earlier, began to quiver again, and while her gaze was elsewhere, it finally split, and a tiny Dawn hatchling tumbled out.
With a little creel, echoed by a startled one from Kaiph who'd launched himself skyborne in surprise, she lurched towards Ledia, chirping hungrily and staring at the girl.
Finally, Kisa realized what was going on and turned to look at the dainty creature. She was winged, unlike the first, but abnormally small, even for a dawn.
"You had best feed her," she advised, indicating the food brought by the drudge. "You can use that if you don't have any of your own."

((*picks randomly* Khali, you have egg five, and I'll have egg two, okay? XD))

Hmmm... why was it that, whenever he thought nothing interesting would happen and he would get a single day with out either a plague or an earthquake or that crazy Copperrider Weyrling stalking him around the Weyr, bugging him out of his mind...something happened?

You have always wanted a firelizard, Relicanth reminded him, turning his huge, soft tan head around to look at his Rider from out on the ledge. The young Brownrider grunted, a little cushion on top of his face for some reason or another, unwilling to get up from the small couch, on which he was lying on his back.

This would be a good chance, K'rion, the Brown pressed gently. Do you want to miss it?

No... The teenage Rider got slowly to his feet, poked his hair to make sure it was flat, yawned once, and stepped outside, dragging Relicanth's riding straps with him. The dragon stood patiently while they were put on him, crouching down to K'rion could climb onto his neck, and pushed off the ledge, gliding gently down to land outside the Hatching Sands.

Good luck.

Mm-hm... More interested now, the Brownrider entered quietly, his dark brown eyes turning a softer shade as he spotted the tiny eggs and smiled. They changed again a moment later, sparking amber for a second as he saw the Weyrwoman herself. He dipped his head politely, keeping his mind carefully neutral. The woman still intimidated him.

"I'm guessing I'm not too late," he muttered softly, half to himself, half to... well, whoever happened to hear him.

Ledia was heartened a bit by the warm welcome of the Weyrwoman. Who had said that she was scary? Some other candidate that didn’t know what they were talking about probably. She took three tiny steps forwards and played with a lock of her dark brown hair. But then she realized she should be doing something to prepare herself, like getting some of the meat that had been brought. She took a sliver of meat delicately between her two bony fingers and gingerly carried it over to the eggs. The slimy feeling of the fresh meat gave her wherrybumps but she was determined not to drop it. She would be ready!

There was one egg that was quivering at the moment so naturally, her attention turned towards that. The egg rocked until it split and a Dawn firelizard appeared. Ledia’s heart beat a little faster. She held a discreet hand over her heart, praying that it wouldn’t damage itself. The Dawn came towards her and Ledia froze, as if she might startle it by moving even an inch. The tiny creature went to her for food, she has chosen Ledia.

With shaking hands, she held the piece of meat out for the hatchling. The tiny thing snapped it up viciously and then creeled for more. Surprised by the vehemence of the little creature but undeterred, Ledia took another piece, just as the Weyrwoman suggested she feed the little thing and gave her permission to use the meat. Should she have asked permission? Ledia couldn’t feel embarrassed though, the Dawn was demanding very shrilly that she be fed. Ledia carefully fed another piece to her, making sure only the meat reached the little one’s vicious teeth.

“Thank you,” she said quietly and shyly to the Weyrwoman when the Dawn had eaten herself silly and then fallen asleep almost in an instant. She stroked the flitt’s belly like as if she were petting a kitten, with a single finger.
“I shall name her… Raine.”

((Side Note: Raine means queen.))

((Fia, you should put your dragcave eggs on one of the fansites dedicated to giving them clickies...and thanks for picking ^^))

Kisa looked up when K'rion came in, and recognized the young Brownrider as the aquaintance of that insane girl who rode the Copper dragon...
But, if she recalled, he was neither insane nor talkative, so she didn't feel any need to frighten him. She also seemed to recall scaring him in the past.
"No, you're not too late, K'rion," she told him, pleased that she'd remembered his name. Kisa did not have a good memory for names, so this was quite an accomplishment. Without even a prompt from Lilath!

Then one of the eggs in the sands hatched, and a little Sea, a beautiful shade of turquoise blue, tumbled from her containment. Like the dawn, she was perfectly normal and healthy.
Kisa let out a breath of relief upon seeing her. That was good...perhaps the first had just been an anomally. Those happened, occasionally. Firelizards could be born mutated, she supposed, even though it was not common.
"There," she said, pleased. "I think that you ought to feed her, K'rion. She is heading in your direction. If you have nothing to feed her with, there's meat over there."

The Weyrwoman jerked her chin in the direction in question, and wondered whether she should have brought Mikael. Would the Weyrbrat have appreciated a firelizard?
Well...he was only one Turn old just then. Probably not. He'd try to eat it.
She decided in the end that it was a good thing he was not here. No doubt his fostermother would never even consider such a thing.
The Sea lurched towards K'rion, as she had noted, creeling hopefully.

((ARE there such things?! O_O I never knew... do you know of any in particular? And no problem. biggrin.gif Anyhow... *cuddles hatchling* I LOVE the flitty! K'ri loves her too. XD Haha. His first love: his firelizard!))

K'rion had just had enough time to feel very, very relieved that (-a-) The Crazy Girl was not present to annoy him to death/humiliate him somehow/get him into horrible and undeserved trouble, and (-b-) the Weyrwoman was not half as scary as she had been the last time they had met, before a tiny, damp, absolutely beautiful-yet-adorable Sea firelizard broke from her egg and demanded his immediate attention. The young Rider's gaze softened further at the sight of the little creature and he nodded politely to show Kisa that he had heard her (and over the hatchling's creeling, at that), murmuring, "Yes... thank you," kneeling down, and gently scooping the hatchling into his arms.

The tiny Sea squirmed a little, squeaking, until K'rion made his way in the direction that Kisa had indicated and offered the starving critter -he could already feel her hunger- a small piece of meat. The food vanished in an instant and the Brownrider's fingers were nudged at for more. His now bright-amber gaze sparkling with delight, K'rion smiled down at the baby firelizard as he fed her until she hiccuped, yawned, and swiftly curled up into a soft, turquoise ball in the crook of his arm.

What's her name? Fendith asked softly.

"Don't you want to name her? This was your idea." This was a Weyr; surely people would know that he was speaking to a dragon...

My idea for you. What's her name? the Brown repeated.

"Fine..." K'rion frowned thoughtfully down at the dozing Sea for a moment. His expression cleared after a few moments, eyes returning to a soft brown shade.

"Kailani."

Fendith let out a soft rumble of approval outside, pleased with the firelizard, the name, and currently, the world in general.

Now they just had to make sure that The Crazy Girl didn't find out abour little Kailani until the poor creature could defend herself; or fly away. Either one.

((It means 'sea and sky'; pretty accurate for a Sea flitter, huh? ^___^ I s'pose he'll call her Kaia for short, which means 'the sea' and -oddly- 'from the earth'. The second makes no sense here, but I like 'Kaia' better so... it'll just be her nickname, then! XD))

((Yeppers. There're lots, actually. The one I remember the name of is The Cracking Egg but you have to be a member of the Dragcave forum to get your eggs on it. There're lots more sites listed in the fansite section of the forum...My favourite is by someone called Gwynevere. I forget its name, but you can add your own eggs.

And I'm glad you like 'er ^^))

Kisa nodded, watching K'rion and the little Sea firelizard with a half-smile. Well. Obviously he liked her, so that was something. Now, how many of the blasted creatures were there left?
Mentally, she counted the little bumps of sand, and sighed.
Shards. What'd happen to the ones left? Would she have to Impress them all? The idea was not appealing. None-the-less...it'd be better than letting them die.
Still, they weren't doing anything just then, so she stood, and waited, Chosen eyes swirling idly.

(( Can I request egg number 3 for Aria? ))

By the time Aria even had a clue as to where she was, she had been slightly thrown off her train of thought as her eyes saw people surrounding something of which made the young woman curious. When she had neared the group, she smiled softly to herself as she 'danced' about the others to get a better view of what was exactly the center of attention.

Seeing as there were but three eggs left, Aria debated within herself if it would be wise to have a fire lizard--by now she had seen several of the people with semi-freshly hatched 'lizards. When everything seemed to go smoothely on her thoughts, she crept forward some and peered at the remaining eggs. So far, none of them seemed to contain life, but that would probably be left unquestioned to Aria should one of them hatch right as she knelt to get a better look. But knowing her luck, Aria stayed back within the small group and just seemed to take in the sight of the last few eggs. If they hatched, greath, and if not, then at least she would not have any of these 'lizards to worry about until the next time she planned to go to the next one.. Though this one was already by accident, and whether any upcoming ones would be accidental or not, Aria left that unanswered.
