I was just remembering that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was getting some hype - I guess it's opening soon? Man, I'm a horrid admin - I have no time to figure out such things. Anyway, I was thinking about my own personal feelings of remaking this (I'm incensed; Gene Wilder will forever be my Willy Wonka) and how I imagined Johnny Depp would play the role of Willy Wonka. I'm sure he'll be more than decent, but I mean...Willy Wonka struck me as being a bit neurotic. Especially with that bit with the half-chair, the half-table and all that towards the end.

Then I began thinking: What other roles has Johnny Depp played? Cause they seem to be mostly neurotic ones to me.

Captain Jack Sparrow - drunk, but still slightly neurotic.
Gilbert Grape - does this really need an explanation?
Agent Sands - "I'm going to freak right out."
The guy in The Secret Window - Neurotic, with his "problem" and all.
Edward Scissorhands - not really neurotic, but still pretty jumpy (e.g. when he pops the bed, or how he keeps walking off when the mother first meets him)

The one exception I can think of to my list was Don Juan DeMarco. I love that movie. Heh. But he was very relaxed there. Quirky, yet relaxed.

Is it just me that seems to find Johnny Depp becoming somewhat of a character actor? Could be.

Thoughts?

Lets not forget Ichabod Crane, because damn...

Dean Corso is a complete bore next to most of his characters though.

Anyway, I am highly disturbed they would even consider remaking this. This is what nightmares are made of! Oompas - they could stand on their own as reason enough. ohmy.gif

I mean, I saw it and I read the book and that is territory I wish never to tread again. Gah!

And you say Johnny Depp is to be a part of this? I doubt even he could tempt me.

Man, of all the scary childhood memories I wish I could forget, this one is right up there. lol

But in terms of Johnny himself, I don't really follow his work per se. It just always seems to be there. He's very good and I love his characters (Ichabod most of all), but as for what type of actor he is, I've never even thought about it. His characters do seem to stand out more than the plot they're involved in though - they're almost always very interesting.

Well, I tend to like his characters as well. In fact, I just recently purchased Don Juan DeMarco because it was on sale and I friggin' LOVE that movie. wink.gif

It's just that I wish he would branch out a bit sometimes. Maybe I'm being too harsh. I feel the same way about Alan Rickman sometimes, though at least he was in Sense and Sensibility and he totally won my heart over as Colonel Brandon.

I didn't see the one where he played Dean, unfortunately.

And yes - Depp will be played Willy Wonka himself. He looks good so far, costume-wise, but...there is just no replacing Gene Wilder. If I'm employed by the time it comes out, I'll probably see it, if for no other reason than to know what the hell everyone else is chattering about. tongue.gif

Dean is from The Ninth Gate. He's a rare book appraiser... average mostly, but he gets a couple of cool one-liners.

It's probably why, even though Johnny is pretty good, I've never considered him a favourite. Has he ever played a bad guy? Like the full on murderous type? I'd like to see him do something like that.

Don Juan DeMarco is one I've never heard of before.

Hm...Johnny as Willy Wonka? Interesting. Not sure how I feel about this.

I must say that my all time favorite neurotic character that Johnny plays is Ichabod Crane! He just pulls it off so well, the quirkiness and everything.

And that is my two cents. tongue.gif

Yeah, Ichabod was pretty hot. Wasn't Christopher Walken in that as well? Damn, he scared me.

I'm not sure how I feel about it except that Johnny looks good all dressed up that way. Um...it's a bit challenging to find pictures, so I'll just link to the movie poster.
