Title: Paperwork
Description: open to anyone who wants to post

Stormy rubbed her eyes. It had been a long night. There were at least three traumas during the night. Car accident, stabbing, and a kid that was throwing up as much blood as they were putting back into him. All were heart pounding-ly difficult.

And Stormy didn't get to take part in any of it. Her pager decided that it was going to die and not alert her to all the fun that was going on while she was asleep in the on call room. Not only was she pissed, but she had gotten an ass chewing as well. As for her punishment.

Paperwork. Piles of it. But she had coffee. So all was okay.

She grabbed her disposable coffee cup and tilted it back in her mouth... all the way back... any more back and she'd be on the floor.

Correction. She had had coffee, and everything was shit.

It had been a long night, and Juno wanted nothing more than to leave the hospital and go home to sleep through the whole day. She was lucky enough to have been the attending on call in the hospital that night. There must have been a full moon because there were at least ten babies delivered that night under her watch. She found herself hurrying from one room to the other, attempting to be in more than one place at once. It was simply impossible, one of the many things she hated about being human. There was not one minute to spare for herself; not one minute to stop and center herself before moving on to the next anxious mother-to-be. It was nights like these that she dreaded the most. Last night all the expectant mothers knew everything; they were barking out orders to nurses, demanding epidurals when it was too late for one, screaming their lungs out and cursing all the "incompetent" doctors in the room. It was like they had read through "What to Expect When You're Expecting" and all of the sudden they're experts. Juno, known as Dr. Aurelia Parker, usually did her best to handle them with patience and care. But on nights like these when the hormonal driven women were at their worst, she could do nothing but strap on those latex gloves, put on a stern face, and get to work in the most business-like way possible. It's not like she was always like that, but one of the things she hated most was being told what to do, especially by people that had no clue what they were talking about.

Now it was morning and officially the end of her shift. Finally, she could go home and get some rest. Her eyes were sunken, her usually flawless makeup was faded, and her usually tight ponytail was loose and falling apart. To put it nicely, she was a disheveled, tired mess. Before leaving however, every doctor had to fill out paperwork on their patients, sign discharges, approve labs - you know, the fun stuff. Despite how tough and tiring it is, being a doctor had its perks - getting to save lives, perform thrilling and exciting procedures; essentially playing god. Doing paperwork? Not one of those perks. Aurelia dragged her feet to the nurse's station and held out her hand for her stack of patient files. Oh god, it's huge today, she lamented to herself. Resting her head in her hand, she took out a pen and opened the first one and began signing away. She stole a glance at the girl next to her and noticed her similar tower of paperwork. The girl looked just as tired as she did, if that was possible. She wouldn't wish this kind of exhaustion on her worst enemy.

With a sigh, she said to the girl "Rough night for you too, huh? It was a madhouse in here last night."

Stormy crushed the paper cup in her hand in frustration, tossing it into a near by rubbish bin. Lithium batteries. That's what she was going to use from now on. Or the titanium ones. Whatever lasted longer now days. Tomorrow they'd probably announce a battery that would like fifty years. She needed that battery last night.

"I could only wish." Stormy shoved her thoughts back to the paperwork, scowling slightly at the charts. "My pager batteries died last night. I didn't get any of my pages for the emergencies that rolled in. I lost out on the chance at one of three surgeries."

She looked up at the woman, "Makes me wish I were on the maternity service. At least I would have gotten some action. I heard there were a shit ton of babies last night. Some baby boom we're having." Stromy was just glad she wasn't the next.

"My pager batteries died last night. I didn't get any of my pages for the emergencies that rolled in. I lost out on the chance at one of three surgeries."

Juno let out a little "Aww." To a surgeon, any chance of getting in on a surgery is one that has to be taken. It was the thrill that many of them thrived on, and Juno understood how losing out one could be so discouraging. It was like a lawyer losing out on an exciting case, or a cop missing the chance to use his gun.

"Makes me wish I were on the maternity service. At least I would have gotten some action. I heard there were a shit ton of babies last night. Some baby boom we're having."

Dr.Parker couldn't help but let out a little laugh at the remark. Most of the time a day on the maternity service meant waiting, waiting, and more waiting. They were just always waiting for the babies to come around. But then there would be those times, like last night, that no baby wanted to wait and everything was a beautiful, hectic mess. She blinked and a little smirk tugged at the end of her lips, "Indeed. A shit ton." She glanced over the blonde and put down her pen for a bit. The girl intrigued her. It was amazing to her how she could be so tired and yet so spunky. She liked it. "So," she began. "Are you an intern? I haven't seen much of you."

Stormy brought then end of her pen to her lips, staying quiet for a moment. Five more words an she would be done with this chart. The thing was, her brain just didn't want to focus on them any more.

"Yeah, second year. I'm not usually down here doing... this." She tapped the pen on the paper and let out a long, drawn out sigh. Was she completely screwed in the head that she would rather be cutting someone open then sitting at a desk? In a hospital, that was supposed to be the norm, right?

"I'm either in an operating room or with a patient. Running labs or in the emergency room. Always on the go with a cup of coffee or tea and an hour worth of sleep."

Juno - October 21, 2010 09:34 PM (GMT)
Juno was signing papers away furiously as the intern talked, nodding as she listened. Paperwork was definitely not one of the things she loved about being a doctor. It was a long, tedious process that always had to be done. She supposed she could delegate it to her interns as well, but they screwed up so many things that the last thing she needed was the nurses yelling at her because they didn't put the right information or signed in the wrong places. Anyway, she figured most interns would rather be out learning how to do new exciting procedures than do paperwork, which was neither new nor exciting.

"I'm either in an operating room or with a patient. Running labs or in the emergency room. Always on the go with a cup of coffee or tea and an hour worth of sleep."

Juno didn't turn away from her paperwork, she just replied nonchalantly "Well I hope you're not complaining. There are so many people that would like to be in your shoes."

Stormy Simon - October 22, 2010 12:05 AM (GMT)
"No, no, no. I was just explaining why you probably haven't seen much of me. I am thankful to have this job. This career. I've worked so hard to get where I am now, there is no way in hell I'm going to complain about what I've got." Looking back down at her charts, she tried to concentrate again.

"Well, maybe I will a little bit, but nothing big. Just stupid little things that people usually complain about."
