GOTTA BE CAREFUL

Social events were normally one of Artemis' favorite things to go to when she was back home. But then again, when she was out on a job, sometimes the social events she went to then were pretty amazing too. Fabulous drinks, well dressed women, handsome men, great music. Artemis loved a good party. And when people got to drinking, secrets flew and lovers collided. Oh, it was such a good thing.
Tonight, however, was not a night where she was in the mood for any of it. Since the higher ups were still trying to figure out where to send her next, Artemis was still stuck in London town. For some reason, it seemed they were taking much longer than usual to find her a new job. Artemis didn't like to wait. She was exceptionally testy because she hadn't been laid in a while either. Not since...
Downing her drink, Artemis viciously stopped the train of thought. It was a night of drinking, dancing and pleasure. Not a night to think back on how incredibly pissed off she was at a certain male person. Running a hand down her dress to smooth it out, she excused herself from the circle of women who had been chatting. Or gossiping. Whatever they wanted to call it, it held no relevance to Artemis. She began to make her way over to the bar that had been set up. She needed another drink. Maybe even two.
Reaching the bar, she waved at the bartender who signaled he'd be there in a minute. Turning around, Artemis leaned back against the bar, her eyes scanning the crowd. Obviously, this was a ministry thing, so hopefully precautions had been taken place. But one never knew. As she stood there, she watched Ramona sneak out the front door. Lucky girl. Maybe Artemis would follow soon enough.

One more drink. Just a teensy tiny little shot glass really. He could walk home. He always walked home. Walking home drunk would be no problem. One more drink. Irritated at his minds own persistence, Stephen smacked a few sickles down on the counter and ordered his fourth drink that night.
Scotch. No ice, no water. Scotch. Please." The barkeep shot him a strange look (scotch was muggle drink after all) but nodded and slid him his drink. Nodding, he readied himself for the burning sensation that would soon be sliding down his throat. At least it was better than feeling nothing at all.
Woah there Steph... calm down. Tonight isn't going to be one of those raging drunk nights. He told himself, taking a small sip instead of the big one he intended.
Maybe he should join a conversation? That might steer him off the path of imminent drunkness. Who... who... Oh fuck it, just say hello and hope someone answers.
"These parties are always built up to be something they're not." he snort/laughed, addressing anyone in his general area. "Really, I don't know why i keep coming."

As Artemis leaned against the bar, she swayed slightly to the music, her dress catching the lights and reflecting them off in many directions. She continued to watch the rest of the room. Her head turned to the left, she didn't see the man come up beside her until she heard him speaking, loudly.
Turning her head, she was a little surprised to see Stephen Sickles there at the bar next to her. His skin was flushed red, easily allowing Artemis to deduce that he was three sheets to the wind. Artemis envied him. She wished she was there as well.
"The drinking and the women is why you keep coming back Stephen," Artemis put a hand on his arm for a moment, then brought it back to her side. She smiled at him, and although it wasn't a complete smile, she figured a drunk Stephen Sickles wouldn't notice.
Artemis always tried to keep herself a little separated from Stephen when she was around the office. Not that she was afraid of him. She just, didn't want to give him any wrong ideas. A few years ago, Stephen had had a rough breakup with a fiance or something. She'd found him drunk at a bar.
Well, Artemis didn't like seeing a fellow coworker in such a down mood, so she did what she did best and had a little one night stand with him. Nothing special. Never spoke about it again. Three years had gone by since then. Artemis was sure he must have forgotten all about it by now.

It took a few seconds for his eyes to focus on the pretty blonde woman who replied, but when he did, he smiled warmly and set his drink on the counter.
"Artemis! Or Arte, I suppose. How right you are. The drinks and the women." Her words rung a bell... Actually, he was sort of experiencing deja vu at the moment. He was in a bar... he was halfway slammed... "Oh..." He breathed, somewhere between a groan and a laugh. "How've you been? I haven't seen you around much since..."
Oh Merlin. Stephen, what is wrong with you?? Disgusting human being. She's going to hit you if- WHEN- she remembers. Stephen ran his tired fingers through his messy black hair and averted his gaze to the floor.

And they had passed straight from social acquaintances to awkward ex-sex partners. Lovely. As Artemis stood there, trying to decide if she was going to remark or ignore the comment, the bartender finally decided it was her time to get a drink. She glanced over her shoulder at him. "Two glasses. Firewhiskey and a brandy," she was shocked with herself. When did she ever drink those? She'd never experienced the flavor combination before she had...the other night...
She frowned, anger surging through her once more. However, she had to get rid of the frown. Stephen would probably think it was directed at him. Definitely wasn't directed at him. At some other guy that had been lucky enough to not be seen by her yet.
"Yes, I guess it has," She decided to ignore the comment, but answer the other questions. "I've been busy lately, running around the world. Catching criminals. You know the drill," She forced a smile, trying to ignore the seething rage inside her. She didn't need to release it on this man. He had enough troubles with having to deal with hers.
The bartender returned with her drinks and she first took a long pull from the firewhiskey and then from the brandy. This was going to be a night where she wanted to get shit face drunk. She just knew it.

Stephen laughed, the awkwardness of the situation finally setting on his slightly impaired mind. Why was she frowning? She was still upset that he had... oh god.
But her frown turned into a smile in a matter of seconds, so Stephen decided not to dwell on it. Don't be so self-centered, Stephen. he scolded himself inwardly, taking another sip of his drink. Not everything has to be about you."Yes, I do know the drill. Too well, I think. But at least it has it's perks. Free alcohol."
He raised his glass as if in a toast, and took yet another sip, nearly emptying out the crystal glass.

Glad that her frown hadn't upset him, Artemis smiled up at the man. Problem was, he didn't seem like a man to her, so much as an awkward kid. She had been drunk when she'd been with him the one and only time she had. Had she regretted it? No, not really. It wasn't like he had been bad or anything. But, like she'd mentioned before, she didn't like to dip her pen in the company ink.
He mentioned the free alcohol and Arte took another hit of her drinks, glad to have something to distract her mind. The fire whiskey burned while the brandy almost soothed. "Yes, free alcohol is always a plus."
Another sip, keep them coming. Maybe then the pain will edge away. "How have you been? Its been a while since I've been around the office." Because she hated office life. Artemis preferred the free lance life to the office life. Pushing papers and writing reports sucked. A lot.
