Overlord Name: Belegos Averite

Gender: Male

Age: 6853

Appearance: Loud, obnoxious and covered horn to tail in the posh, gaudy and extravagant, Belegos is the walking embodiment of greed, as a Money Demon should be. The ruler of Mammon looks neither exceptionally strong nor devastatingly handsome. In truth, these observations are not only true, but gross understatements. His build is rotund, yet his has very little body fat. Pallid green skin loosely hangs from his frame, fold upon overlapping fold creating the both the illusion of bulk and an intricate network of deeply creased wrinkles. A small tuft of coarse black hair, cropped short and slicked back, adorns the top of his remarkably smooth scalp. Poking through the hair and rising up about three inches lies a trio of horns, each covered in intricate gold-leaf designs, expensive rings, and unnecessary piercings. A pentad of beady eyes smolder in the back of two sunken sockets; three eyes occupying the left, two peering out of the right. Directly below lies a nose that is somehow both narrow and broad, wide nostrils eagerly taking in the aroma of newly acquired coin. Encased behind his fleshy lips lie several rows of small, pointed teeth, their interlocking zig-zag making his businessman smile seem almost predatory. Short limbs, each ending in seven clawed appendages, sprout out from underneath his clothes, each as dexterous as the last and capable of an iron grip when freed from his delicate garb. The last, and least, notable feature about his physique is a short tail sprouting from his backside, the length of flesh sporting similar decoration as his horns and ending in a stereotypical spade shaped tip.

Where his physical appearance is aged and grotesque, Belegos wears nothing but the finest clothing money can buy. Silk is the name of the game here, and he dons enough of the fabric in his daily wear to clothe several fully grown humans. Sitting atop his head rests a silken top hat, artificially adding to the demon’s Napoleonic height. Layers upon layers of silken shirts, vests, coats, overcoats, sashes, scarves, flowing pants, pointy shoes and robes, multiple of each compounding upon the others and clashing in vibrant colors, swathe his wide body. Gold, platinum and silver chains can be found ringing his neck and woven into his ensemble. Each of his pudgy fingers sports multiple rings, a veritable A-Z of precious gems and metals on display. Strapped across his waist is a sturdy leather belt with various pouches securely strung onto iron loops embedded into the tough hide. The contents of the only full pouch contains, among other things, a peacock feather quill and merchant ledger, a handful of corroded coins from long forgotten empires, and a withered human heart with a blade shaped hole run through it; the other sacks hang limp and empty from the loops.

Personality: If there is something Belegos loves more than money, he hasn’t found it, nor does he want to. Merely the feel of the coin he covets so highly has an almost intoxicating effect on the Money Demon. Do not confuse this lust for money with your typical greed, however. “Things” hold about as much sway over Belegos as a painted masterpiece would for a blind man. It is the currency itself, the actual value of “things”, which drives his ambitions and keeps him awake into all hours of the night. For all his extravagance, Belegos is loathe to be parted from his money and will spend it only in the pursuit of greater fortunes.

Taking a closer look into each of Belegos’ eyes reveals a slightly different color in each, representing a unique aspect of his physiology. Three of his five eyes are directly attached to different sub-brains, each highly specialized to business, memorization or intuition respectively. These sub-brains interpret the visual information he receives through their own filter before compounding all the data in the super-brain, which has two unfiltered eyes connected to it. This unique configuration allows Belegos to focus on something else while still being able to calculate the business potential, and therefore the profitability, of any situation. After all, Belegos is a business man, first and foremost.

Background: Born from the collective greed of countless human souls, the trader city of Mammon was inherited by Belegos, a young demon with little influence at the time, when his master and previous ruler of Mammon was slain defending the city nearly 4000 years ago. The previous overlord had an affinity for written contracts, and the citizens viewed every iron clad legal document that flowed from his pen as irrefutable law. Thus, though it was originally intended for rule to be passed to the former overlord’s heir, a stroke of luck and some creative forgery handed Belegos a silver platter that not only held the city, but the former heir’s head as well. Establishing his newly acquired capital as a shining beacon of big business run amok, Belegos set his eyes on a goal loftier than merely becoming the Lord of all Overlords. No, Belegos planned on seizing control of the true power in the Netherworld; he was going to weave his claw tipped fingers through the wallets of every inhabitant of Hell and bend the economy to his will.

Netherworld: “The Wealth of Empires Flows Through Mammon.” A finely wrought marble archway bearing this inscription frames a break in the towering fortifications surrounding the city large enough for several merchant carts to ride abreast. Those who pass through the gate are greeted by the daunting sight of the Cash King’s city. Not only are the streets of Mammon paved with gold, 24 karat bars to be precise, each building, street corner, lamp post, even the fire hydrants, ooze extravagance. The main highway circles the city before exiting back through the city gate, creating a loop of commerce that acts as the lifeblood of the city. Numerous side roads sprout from the highway, creating capillaries that reach nearly every nook and cranny in the city. Mammon is split into five sectors, each serving a distinct yet vital purpose in keeping the city alive. Artisan’s Avenue is the center of production in the city, the hand wrought works of master craftsmen supplying what isn’t shipped into the city from outside sources. The Warehouse District is a veritable jungle of shipping crates and storage buildings. Any goods not shipped out of Mammon are stored here until needed. Melchom’s Wharf, though not located on a waterfront, is the launching point for all of Mammon’s merchant caravans. The crown jewel of the city, however, is the Vault, a monolithic citadel that acts as both Mammon’s bank and the home of the Overlord.

Windfall Profit: Due to rapidly fluctuating nature of Mammon’s economy, unexpected gains are a common occurrence. Whenever one of these golden nuggets of money spring up, the excess gains are immediately wired to Belegos, wherever he may be, which he pours into his troops for the conquest of greater wealth. +30 attack to one unit OR +15 attack to two units OR +10 attack to three units (30 points of empowerment + 10 for extra options. 1 TCD)
