"South Pit Ramblings" by Alvin Reed Saturday Afternoon August 8 Report/Pictures Seemed like it should have been a nice afternoon, but not any others thought so, I reckon. There were some dark clouds that looked to be moving North out of the gulf. ![]() The windsock indicated a breeze blowing from the East and it was cool and pleasant. ![]() Looked like it might have rained some earlier in the day. A nice water taxi strip and water filled grass choked drain grate. ![]() View of the lonely Pit/Pavilion area and other than Russell and later on Harold, that was about it. ![]() In the otherwise pristine North Pit was this litter laying around, not too bad, cudda been worse. ![]() Pickings on the food side of things were a little on the slim side also. ![]() In a desperate attempt at finding something to eat, Russell said that he would butcher this jumbo Mushroom and add it to the fried plants for Sunday's buffet. ![]() Russell is explaining to Harold Dillon why his Avistar RC nitro airplane model is still in the back of his truck and not flying. Harold did not seem to buying the explanation. ![]() Russell has the new airplane fever once again and was pointing out this German "Stuka" RC model that he wants to get one day soon. ![]() Not much of a report without any aircraft, but maybe tomorrow will be a better more attended and active day. I left Russell "Home Alone" at field, he was picking a mess of the big mushrooms to give to Harold, he said. -------------------- |

Very funny. That was wishful thinking. Thinking that I should have stopped by the Dollar General and picked up some Chili Cheese Nacho makings. I found that plate in the frig, where I left it last Sunday and it still had a little flavor and scent to it. -------------------- |

"South Pit Ramblings" by Alvin Reed Sunday Afternoon August 9 Report/Pictures Looked to be some chance for rain today like yesterday but got to field in time to see Justin and Tony laughing about something funny. ![]() Turns out that it was Bill Culberson's truck and trailer stuck in the soft ground from all the recent rain. Al Ayler had given Bill explicit instructions as just where to drive to get his trailer parked. Wonder what Al has against Bill. They had to call in a truck with a winch, I think. ![]() Found something to put on my plate today, Robert and Tony had cooked. I had beans and rice with some good grilled chicken. Would have had a second Pepsi, but I had only taken one swallow out of it and saw Russell dumping some cig ashes in it. ![]() Billy Krebs had this J-3 Cub for sale with everything installed and ready for flight. We were having to hold Russell back from making it his fourth yet to be flown Cub in his collection. ![]() The first of three crashes today was when Robert's Double Demon twin engine speed plane got "Frtized" into a single engine plane. ![]() Someone had this nice looking gasoline engine on a stand for testing purposes, looks like. ![]() Jon taxied out this Cub for a flight, I think that it might be John Walker's. ![]() There was a good turn out of people and models in the North Pit today, just about filled to capacity and in stark contrast to the South Pit, where there was absolutely no one today. Come on South Piters, have you forgot how to fly? Or is it so depressing down there since Alvin has taken an extended break from RCing? ![]() Or maybe this foreboding rain cloud slowly moving in from the South had everyone scared off up to the North end. ![]() Henry Waltman and Frank Madison wanted to pose behind a good looking airplane today, for a change, so Dewey Brown's P-51 Mustang was pressed into service. And even the pilot in Dewey's Mustang is looking more and more like an old timer. ![]() Robert was tired of fooling with the experimental aircraft after the Double Demon crash, so he had this very red Fokker Tri-plane. And an even more conventional "Star Duster" model. ![]() Robert and Russell cleaned up the kitchen/cooking area. Russell is good about going over all food contact/prep areas with a sanitizer. ![]() Sam seems to have lost interest in whatever the animated story was that Russell has Tony so enthralled with. Russell probably telling about his new internet, cable, TV, and telephone service out in the Grand Bay area. ![]() And in preparation for the second crash of the afternoon, Bill gets his Turbine Engine powered Jet ready for flight. ![]() Turbine engine all warmed up and the Jet taxis out past the fresh ruts in the front lawn. -------------------- |

Sunday Report Continued
Bill's jet seemed to be doing alright for several passes, but then started some strange flight wiggles and waggles, Bill tries to get it lined up for a runway landing and the engine seemed to stall and the jet plummeted into the ground down to South of runway. Was torn up pretty good with all it's guts showing. A group went on the rescue/recovery mission and were needed to carry all the jet parts back to pit. ![]() Not knowing that he would have the third crash of the day, Al Ayler gets his very nice Texan out of his trailer and assembles it for flight. ![]() Al taxis the Texan down to South end of runway for a North bound takeoff. The Texan crashed about five or six times without hitting the ground or anything else somehow, just after takeoff. He got it all straightened out and made a good pass or two...AND...THEN... ![]() The Texan looked like it got a little too slow and started stalling, Al almost saved it again, but it wound up going in nose first way over in East side of field. They went after it in a truck and brought back the pitiful remains. ![]() The poor pilot looks like he probably suffered a bad case of whiplash/broken neck, a wonder that he did not go through the windshield, a testament to wearing his seat belt harness, too bad that there was no airbag. ![]() The front end of the Texan got nakkered up pretty good. -------------------- |

Well, that makes me feel better just knowing that some folks were in the South Pit earlier. The Johnson family picked up the Mustang that Billy had for sale. The Cub went back home in Billy's van, but Russell sure is interested in it. Would not be surprised if the Cub did not find a new home in the Grand Bay Model Aviation Collection. -------------------- |
