Description: Gyrocopter!

Johnny_J - April 16, 2012 03:07 AM (GMT)
I think this will work! I'm converting a helicopter to a gyrocopter! :D

I would upload some photos but Image shack says I need some valid auth token or dev key??

Got the elevator and rudder done.
Slotted the bearing mounts for the main shaft in order to tilt it back, done!
Got the wheels and landing gear done too!
Working on mounting the motor and servos.
I'll have some pix soon! ;)

:D My friend Grant Richardson built one out of coroplast.

Here's his newest gyro.

He flies a real gyrocopter :yickes: as well as airplanes.

 Your blades are on the grill.

:sturthepot: They should be well done by the time you get off work. LOL.

Looks like I have to build the blades! I forgot how to balance them though! Anybody got some info for me on that?

Johnny_J - April 21, 2012 09:33 PM (GMT)
Electronics are mounted and operating! All that is left is the linkage and the blades!

Here is the latest photos that I can put up here?? My e-mail address stopped receiving picture messages from my phone for some reason??

Holy crap these photos turned out huge for some reason!
Can you make them smaller Alvin?

I could, but will help you learn. ;)

I see that you are using tinypic.com for the picture hosting.

On their upload page, right above the "Upload Now" button you will find a Resize: drop down menu.

Choose 15" Screen (800X600), this size best for forum and TinyPic will do the resize.

Give it a try, confidence is high.

Here's an update!

It seems I need to learn more about how Gyrocopters work!

I took the blade to Larry's house to check the balance to see how good the balancer I have, is and they were dead on the money!

After we upgraded the bolts on the head to something beefier, we put it in front of a tornado fan and the blades spun backwards!

After some trial I decided to do more research on how they fly! :banghead:

How's this:

If that size suits you, but you could have gone with a little bigger size if you like.

The 800X600 size would be about the biggest one suitable for this forum.

Thanks Alvin! You can delete the post with the big pictures if you want. ;)

So I found this article on how an autogyro works but I'm still confused on hoe to set up these blades!

I've looked at Gyrocopter sites and the concept of how the blades work sounds easy but I can't figure out why my blades want to turn backwards??

Hi Johnny,

From looking at the pictures of your Gyrocopter machine, it looks like you have positive pitch set up in the fixed pitch main blades.

If that is the case:

That is why the blades and head are turning backwards.
Since a gyrocopter is always in a state of autorotation because the head is not powered and depends on the air moving in from under the rotor disk to keep them rotating and will also provide lift.
Gyrocopters are always flown with positive angle of attack regarding the main rotor disk, so that the air comes into bottom of rotor disk as the electric motor driven tractor prop in this case pulls the gyrocopter forward through the air.

Readjust your main rotor blades to about two degrees negative pitch and give that a try.

If you have not already, you might need to think about airplane type rudder and elevator for yaw and pitch control. Some gyrocopters have the head setup so it can be tilted forward and back for pitch control, but that does not look possible on your machine and you could do the same with airplane type horizontal stab and elevator.

It is all a bit of magic to me, I have seen RC gyrocopters tried in the past, with mixed results.
Will be a learning experience for sure and good luck with your project.

Please take a look at the website linked to below.
It has lots of info, pictures, and videos about building RC Gyrocopters.

Yep, Johnny and I talked about that pitch yesterday, but I was not positive that the pitch was wrong...

I went to a couple of full-scale gyrocopter websites and they said that the blades will not spin the way you think, and they will definitely not spin properly if the pitch is not correctly set.

Here's Johnny and his counterrotating, still earth-bound gyrocopter...
The thing looks really good, and it has elevator and rudder surfaces, as you can see here.

Thanks Alvin!

Looks like I need to redrill the holes again! <_<

Johnny_J - June 2, 2012 12:28 AM (GMT)
Made some adjustments and they are now going in the right direction!
Thanks Alvin!
Maybe I'll get to give it a trial run tomorrow! :woohoo:

Johnny_J - June 3, 2012 03:50 AM (GMT)
OK! The blades are spinning in the proper direction!
Now they wont generate the lift or spin up fast enough to leave the ground good!
Gonna modify the blades to make the airfoil thicker and have more surface area in order to produce more lift!
Hope it works!
