Title: 9/11 Sailplane Fly-in
Flying Dutchman - September 12, 2010 03:03 AM (GMT)
Well, Azalea City Model Aeronautics'
1st Annual Sailplane Fly-in turned out better than we anticipated!
We had 26 registered pilots including some from out of town and out of state. Five from Pensacola, FL, one from Milton, FL, and one from Stapleton, AL.
Most of our ACMA glider boys were present!
The field and pavilion looked nice and clean, thanks to Robert, Russell and Elton.
The food was absolutely great, thanks mostly to Robert and Russell.
The event's organization was very good too. Well — I tried my best... :D
Here's a group picture.
Click on the thumbnail below once, let it show, and then click on that larger picture to see it full size:

Guess which plane shown is not a glider, but somehow its pilot worked his way into this picture anyway...
I'm working on the Sep. 11 Pits Report now.
It should follow last weekend's report soon. (That one is in our Web Master's inbox already...)

Great turnout! Had fun even though I didn't feel good! :badair:
Flying Dutchman - September 12, 2010 04:06 PM (GMT)
But you looked good, Johnny_J, and that's what counts... :D

Here's an interesting shot for you. This is a composite image (multiple exposure) of 11 seperate images showing Rob Baker's big Thermal Duration sailplane being pulled up on the winch.

Great shot, TJ!
I'll be stealing it soon... :P

Fantastic editing TJ,
I'll never trust a photo you post without close inspection! Hey Avistar 2, wonder how he got all those planes to line up like that??? :dontknow:

I don't usually do any tricky or subversive editing in my photos. If I do, it's something obvious like this shot. So normally, you can trust my images to be real.
I captured a few other launches that I'll give the same treatment, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

There's no "editing" there.
The camera did it...
CRASH 22 - September 14, 2010 02:28 AM (GMT)
:o There's a podcast about Enzo's glider on the internet.
see the "Did a new Radian ship out in error?" link.
http://www.allthingsthatfly.com/Most people don't believe it has flaps &ailerons
jonkoppisch - September 14, 2010 03:10 AM (GMT)
They're doubting it and want more pics (understandably). Does Enzo still have it or is it back at Robs? If TJ or Frits doesn't have more pics I can swing by and take some.
Jon

:o The last I saw it , Enzo was putting it in his car.
F.D. might have some pictures. :dontknow:
TJR - September 14, 2010 11:39 AM (GMT)
I got that photo from Frits and I (Tango Juliet) posted it on RCGroups in the Radian thread. They just don't want to believe that it's real.
jonkoppisch - September 14, 2010 11:44 AM (GMT)
:D I listened to the pod cast, :D They act like it's an area 59 object ;)
R U going to catch up to them and get more pics? I meant to get one at the fly in but the food got in the way ;)
TJR - September 14, 2010 12:27 PM (GMT)
I didn't even get any photos of it myself. I have to head back to work today, so if you can get photos of it go right ahead. I don't know if Enzo has it yet or if he's returned it to Rob already. Rob had mentioned keeping it for himself.
jonkoppisch - September 14, 2010 12:35 PM (GMT)
:D I figured Rob would do that! He'd be nuts to send it back!!
CRASH 22 - September 14, 2010 04:48 PM (GMT)
:o Did anyone get some pictures?????
Flying Dutchman - September 14, 2010 06:57 PM (GMT)
What is so special about this Radian? :o
You'd think it was plated with gold-leaf and covered with high-voltage photo cells...
TJR - September 14, 2010 11:19 PM (GMT)
Getting back to the Glider Fly In, here are a couple more composite images of sailplanes being launched on the winch.

It's the fact that the plane was good without the flaps and ailerons.
Now it has them. ;)
lrogers - September 15, 2010 09:32 PM (GMT)
That was the first time I saw a sailplane launched off a winch, that was awesome!
Hey TJ, thanks for letting me fly something with wings that didn't spin. :D I haven't flown a sailplane in about 25 years. The last one I had was a Balsa USA standard class called a Nomad (I think). I just might have to consider getting another one before the next sailplane event.
TJR - September 15, 2010 10:29 PM (GMT)
Anytime Larry.
The Radian is beloved by neophytes and seasoned sailplanes enthusiasts alike. In fact a Radian was flown to Third Place in an event at the NATS last month in Muncie. I didn't count them, but I saw at least five at our fly in on Saturday.
