The weyr was quiet, oh so quiet. Both moons were up and shone into the bowl lighting the new dew with their faint light causing it too look as if it was made of diamonds. No sounds could be heard. It was as if the planet stood still, welcoming the cooling touch of fall. If one was to listen closely you could hear the soft breathing of the hundreds if not thousands of creatures that inhabited the weyr. 5 years it had been around, lead first by a Gold, and then her Topaz daughter. 5 years it had withstood the battering of Thread, the ancient enemy returned. For a year and a half its' young Senior Weyrwoman had done her best to keep the last of the dragonriders alive and together. But an older Gold and her rider felt cramped in the quickly growing weyr, plus they despised being commanded by leaders as young and Anya and Avalith.
The 17 turn old woman had watched as part of her weyr had left, yet she said nothing in public about the pain from it, not even to her weyrmate. Only the phantoms of her dreams saw her cry. Thread fell often and claimed the lives of many as it swept of the planet and it's people looked to the young woman to protect them and when she failed and lives were lost she took the blame. She took it with a strong shoulder and a straight face. Doing things exactly the way she'd been taught. Sure she'd had a few blow up, but always out of anger or disgust, never out of sadness or despair. She'd watched helplessly from a sick bed as people died of an illness that seemed to come from some giant creature pulled dead from the sea and then when the dragons took ill she stayed awake from days straight searching for the illness, visiting the sick, and then treating them once a cure was found. No tears shed for the dead. Then she'd learned she was pregnant, just a week or so before a hatching and had no time to tell K'ven herself. For at the hatching, things went bad fast. An egg from Avalith's clutch had been stolen and whisked off to Neora's sands, where the mighty Queens fought over it, each accusing the other of the theft.
Anya did her best to stop it, but in the end an old friend had appeared as if from the dead and had managed to mitigate between the riders and his Giant of a Brown between the two Queens. Of course this old friend took it upon himself to tell the entire population of Neora about her pregnancy, and K'ven. The poor man had fainted and left Anya feeling ashamed for not telling him, yet she shed no tears of the pain of that day. Atleast no to the living. Her dreams saw her cry, the phantoms of her parents and other members of her parents' household saw her tears. 5 months later she gave birth two not one, but two healthy babies, both of which were sleeping soundly in their cribs, a boy and a girl. Anya screamed and cursed from the pain, but never cried, not even days later when it was discovered that she'd been torn by the birth. She'd remained in bed for a fortnight and when she returned to leading found that more riders had been lost to Thread.
She had walked for the next day, all the way around the weyr visiting all of the sick, the old, the young, and the grieving and only stopped because Greenriding healer Echo had noticed she'd caused herself to bleed again and had K'ven carry her to bed. She'd lost her temper with both and had stormed off to the room she shared with the Bronzerider and barred the door. Trapping herself inside with her nursing babes. K'ven had been forced to convince Amoranth to lift him to Avalith's weyr where the Queen sat red eyed and hissing. The rider then rushed past the angry Topaz and found the 18 turn old asleep in a chair, with a baby in each arm, all three asleep. But no tears this time either. When Amoranth won Avalith in a flight she'd cried happy tears, tears of joy, for the pairing always lead to large clutches. 23 eggs had graced the sands from the pairing including 3 Queen eggs. Out of the three guarded eggs came tumbling a Gold first, then a Tourmaline with a blue marbled hide, and lastly a mid-sized Topaz had burst out of her egg more angry them all of her color that had come before.
Before the three queens graced the sands the largest Topaz on the planet decided to leave Lyer and claim the leaderless Neora for herself. With that a precedent Anya did her best to raise her twins, lead her weyr, protect it's inhabitants, and watch the youngest Topaz. But it seemed she was determined to follow her half-sister, but this time she took most of the youngest dragons with her to found a Weyr in the North. And all contact had been lost between the Northern Weyr and the two Southern. Anya had been hurt by it, but again only the ghosts of sleep saw the liquid crystals that fell one at a time from her Ocean blue eyes. And then just days ago, a flit from a Neora rider had appeared with a message. Claimed that a Neoran blue had been murdered by a member of her weyr.
The only proof was a dagger with Lyer's mark on the handle, and it seemed most of Neora was agreeing it MUST have come from the murderer who just HAD to be from Lyer. Despite the fact that alot of them had come from Lyer nearly a turn and half ago. Now the 19 turn-old woman lay in her bed, snuggled against her mate shaking. Not from the slightly damp chill of the early fall morning, or the ere silence that gripped the weyr, but from pain. She had finally taken too much and had drowned her dreams with her tears. She was now awake and crying. She shook as liquid salt ran down her face onto the pillow under her head. Her muffled crying was now the only sound in the weyr and her body was softly shaking the bed, but she was unable to stop.

K’ven had been sleeping soundly, his dreams were flashes of his days at a boy, and the feeling of flying with Amoranth for the first time. Unlike his Weyrmate’s thoughts, his were clean and free of pain or worry. They were latched deeply into his brain and wouldn’t let him wake easily. Anya may have needed comforting, but K’ven didn’t wake immediately. When sleep did finally let him go and he roused enough to become aware of his surroundings, he immediately went on high alert. The bed was shaking ever so slightly and muffled sobs came from behind him. Alarm ran with the adrenaline as he recognized just who was crying. Rolling over his eyes readjusted to the darkness of their shared Weyr and fell on her shaking form.
The shock of seeing his beloved Anya actually crying pulled his every muscle taught as he froze. He’d been with her through her first flight after she’d been all but raped, through the illness that had claimed many lives, even the split of Lyer and the birth of their wonderful children. Yet, he’d never seen her shed a tear. Oh he had shed plenty, especially when he saw Anya in pain or upset. Even now a tingling at the corners of his eyes told him he was about to turn into a sap yet again. Softly touching his weyrmate’s back, he soothed her with a few strokes before gathering her into his arms. “Oh Anya, what’s wrong darling. Please I hate to see you so upset.” He pretended not to see the tears, to him the Weyrwoman was strong, and it didn’t matter if she was crying a river, she would always be the rock of Lyer.
