Lyer's History, Come learn about the history of Lyer

1000 turns ago, AIVAS gave the dragon riders and the people of Pern the knowledge to change their future. It gave them the ability to push the Red Star, their mortal enemy, out of its orbit and away from their home planet. With no thread threatening the planet the inhabitants spread out and made homes in every place possible. The people conquered the Southern and Western continents and made beautiful homes.

With no thread, though, the great dragons were left to both adapt and find new jobs or to become rebels and live alone with other dragons and riders. Some took up jobs as messengers or cargo carriers. Helping holders send messages and supplies rapidly all over the planet. But most scattered throughout Pern and started mini weyrs.

As the turns passed the people of Pern discovered more and more technologies left behind by their ancestors and began to experiment with them as well as develop their own. Some even began to mess with the genetic coding of the dragons, Firelizards, and, yes even, the Whers. Creating some interesting new colors and a new ability in the Firelizards, they could now communicate better, but can now move things telepathically.

Life was good for most on Pern, excluding the dragons and their riders. As the dragons began to breed less and less frequently they decreased in size, until the greens were no larger than a runner. Technological advances have allowed people to perform surgery with anesthesia and pain meds after. Most things are heal able now and people don't even have to have dragons to communicate with now, thanks to the invention of the telephone as well as electricity, the glows long forgotten.

About 10 or so turns ago the queens began to rise more often and the clutches began to become larger and larger. 'Weyrleaders' and the Queenriders were unsure why this was happening, but they passed the information to Stargazers who reported seeming nothing unusual. So the rest of Pern never heard about this. Also the size of the dragons was increasing again and a new color appeared about 2 turns ago. Now with the first Topaz queen ready to raise a young Stargazer has spotted the reason for the increase of numbers and sizes. The Red Star, Pern's old enemy, has returned. About 3 months ago a dolphin reported a thread fall over the ocean. Prompting the remaining dragon's and riders to band together and found Lyer Weyr, thus named for the fact that the rest of the planet believed that the riders were lying to them about the fall, but when a fall fell over a small hold in the south, Sunset Valley Hold, and several dragons were lost due to their lack of skill in fighting thread, the entire planet turned to the riders and their mighty dragons. Sunset Falls Hold was set up to supply the new and only Weyr with food and other essentials. Also with the thread fall came complete destruction on the electrical grid. Telephone still work, but most of Pern is let in complete darkness.

The young Topaz, Avalith, rose almost a month ago and is now egg heavy. The weyr sits in an old volcano, the top of which was blown off, centuries ago, close to where AVAIS and Landing once stood, the super computer now rests in a museum somewhere in the North. Weyrs, halls, barracks, etc... were carved out using the last of the fuel on the planet and super-efficient stone cutters, much like the ones the original colonists had. Anya, Avalith's rider is left with an entire planet watching her for guidance. With the weyrleader dead, due to a small thread fall over his family, the young girl is left to make decisions, which will affect an entire planet and its fate, all on her own.

Pern's 2 remaining Golds don't see eye to eye with each other. One, Ilterith, refuses to listen to Avalith so instead of accepting her rule and command she and her rider leave the weyr to remain rebels. The other, Avalith's mother Evalith, backed down and let her daughter take over. She follows the young topaz and listens to her commands. Some holders are displeased with the fact that their fate now lies in the hands of a 16 turn-old. So they turn to the 10 turn-old Gold Ilterith and her 29 turn-old rider Alira for leadership. Now with Avalith about to clutch Ilterith is trying to win over dragons to join her and try to found a second weyr and win over the holders.

Avalith did clutch and it was nice sized clutch for the topaz's first. 18 eggs graced the sands and as tension built more and more people made their way to the weyr. Some seeking protection from thread and others hoping to impress to one of the eggs. Thread fell again destroying the last mini-weyr forcing more dragon pairs to Lyer. After a month Avalith allowed candidates onto her sands to touch the eggs.

A week later the humming began and everyone swarmed to the sands to watch as the eggs hatched. To everyones amazment, not only did a new color hatch out, the Tourmaline, but out of the other guarded egg came an other Topaz AND a Gold. There was another twin egg containing a Coal and an Iron. The two came out with a pop and each retreated to the shadows along the sides of the cavern, while the Topaz stalked the sands before cutting a poor green's face open and then bonding to a girl with a strong will. The bronze that was the first to hatch bonded to a calm boy. And much to everyone's surprise a Brown and then a Bronze bonded to one boy. After some arguing between the siblings they decided they could share.

A Gold wher ran soon after and laid a nice sized clutch of 12 eggs. When these hatched a gold was out first, but bonded later on. A new color hatched out of one of the eggs, the Bloodstone, she seems to be another calm color. Between the dragons and the whers a flit clutch was laid and hatched revealing a Topaz flit, as well as a new color of Tanzanite. This was after a Ruby had hatched out earlier. Also an Iron with two tails hatched and a Bronze with 4 tail tips hatched out as well.

During the gather a shop keeper was selling mysterious eggs and the race bet takers were also handing out mystery eggs. Which soon hatched to reveal the Seradons, the Ruelles, and the Faens. The new creatues seem to bond to humans much the same as firelizards.

All seemed well as Green Delzeith rose and was caught by a large Bronze male. Then she though she disappeared and no one seemed to know where she had gone. Though Anya didn't seem worried. While she and her rider were missing a member of the dolphin craft and his dolphin drug some large mystery creature from the depths of the ocean before calling the weyr to come see the creature. Though they were ordered to drag it back by the young weyrwoman. Though the damage was done, for not long after they returned it to it's watery grave most of the people that got close to it began to fall ill, including a wher and the Gold handler. Several candidates died from the illness as well as a rider and 2 wher handlers.

About a month after disappearing Green Delzeith put out a call for candidates to come touch her eggs, yes it seemed the little green had laid 12 eggs. The even dozen now lay on the sands awaiting their turn to hatch out and join the weyr. Though they may not want to for it seems some are blaming young Anya for the illness.

Not long after the Green's clutch hatched Ilterith rebelled, tired of listening to Avalith. She disliked the younger, larger queen and wanted a weyr of her own. She took part of the weyr with her and founded Neora weyr. Not long after the split Avalith and the first tourmaline Maiseth rose at the same time in Lyer as Ilterith did at Neora. And the three of them clutched on the same day, which meant that all three clutched hatched on the same day. Neora's was very fast and just as it was ending an iron appeared and dropped an egg, or rather a baby onto the sands, and as he vanished Avalith, Anya, and others from Lyer appeared. It seemed the egg had been stolen from Lyer's hatching which had been going smoothly, but the blue bonded to a candidate at Neora and was left there. Anya's pregnancy was also revealed to the weyr causing K'ven to faint. The Lyer riders returned to Lyer with the left over candidates and the hatching was going so well until the last egg exploded nearly killing the weyrwoman.

As Anya was healing a blue and his rider were murdered at Neora and the only clue was the murder weapon which was a dagger with the initials 'LW' on it. So all eyes turned to Lyer and breif small fights broke out until a man was found hiding in the no man land between the weyrs. He had worked in the storerooms at Lyer and been in love with a rider, but she had dumped him and moved to Neora so he took his rage out on a female rider at the new Weyr, but not the one that had wronged him. He was taken to the North and left to fend for himself. Months went by and Anya gave birth to twins Anven and Kaya, a boy and a girl. They were the apples of their parent's eyes and calmed the young weyrleader down some. But tensions remained high between the weyrs. Females rose and clutched. Twins remained very common even triplets at times. No new colors appeared after the Bloodstones. Whers ran and clutched and no new colors came there either.

Turns went by and the weyrs fought thread together, but nothing more. They often fought over candidates because the females tended to rise at the same time. Ilterith had died some turns back and Junoth, Avalith's first Topaz daughter is the Senior there now. For a turn there was a food shortage, but the weyrs refused to share, but now over four turns since the murder something is killing whers, flits, ruelle, seradons, faens, canines, felines, runner, headbeasts, and everything smaller then a dragon, no one knows what. Bodies are left intact and whole so it is thought to be a virus. It's been striking both weyrs, but neither wants to tell the other. Avalith was recently flown by Amoranth again and is full of eggs. Anya is trying to get Rosanna to talk to her and share the information they have on the deaths, but is having no luck.
