Reta, somewhat nervously, sat at her desk, waiting for the class to begin. "Oppugno" was written on the board, for that was what they were to learn that day.

Once the students were seated, Reta cleared her throat slightly, and then stood in fron of the class. "Good morning students. My name is Reta Esthral and I will be your new Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor." She recognized a few students from Quidditch. "Today we will be learning the Oppugno charm, which causes conjured creatures under your control to attack a target. Now I want you all to get into pairs and cast a protection charm first, and then try the spell." she sighed, and sat down to watch the students in their pairs.

How'd I get both of them?! Jake thought to himself.
He looked up and found himself without a partner. So he wandered over to the nearest person without one and cast Protego. He wondered what would happen.
Now what about those conjured animals...? he thought, wondering how the spell worked if there weren't any animals conjured.

ooc: you conjure your own animals. like birds or something.

Amy turned as someone wandered over to her. "Hey, I'm Amy." she said, glad to have a partner since she didnt really know anyone in the class. She quickly cast a Protego charm around herself, and then looked at the boy. "You wannt go first or me?"

"Jake. You can go first. Unless you don't want to. I don't have a preference either way." he said.
He decided that he had better conjure his own animals, since he didn't see Professor Esthral handing any out.
He whispered a few words and with a few waves of his wand three squirrels appeared.
What is it with me and squirrels? he thought, laughing inwardly.

Amy waved her wand slightly, muttering a spell, and four birds appeared, flying around her. "I'll go." she said. She paused for a minute, thinking of the spell, and then said clearly, "Oppugno." The birds started for Jake, and then stopped midway and came back to her. "Oppugno." she said again. The birds all flew at Jake at once, attempting to peck at him, but the protection charm held them at bay. She smiled, and the birds came back to her.

Jake conjured up a pile of acorns.
"Oppugno!" he said.
The squirrels picked up their nuts and chucked them at James.
"What? No no no no! At her!" he said pointing at Amy. "At her! Sheesh...Oppugno!"
This time they pegged Jake.
"Aw come on...Oppugno!"
This time they charged Amy and bounced off of her shield.
"Good lord..."

Jonas smiled as he watched Jake's squirrels. Better than his own mice that were still attempting to chew their way through his partner's shield. His partner, of course, was on her stool, shaking with fright. Apparently she had a mice phobia. Jonas considered leaving them on her, but finally decided to vanish them.

"Nice job with the acorns, mate," he laughed.

"Thanks. I'd say nice job to you as well...but I don't think I have to..." Jake replied. "We're trying to learn a spell. Not scare our partners."
He chuckled. He waved his wand and with a flourish, he squirrels disappeared.
"I'm Jake." he said, extending a hand in greeting.

Jonas grinned. "I'm Jonas." He winked suddenly at Jake. "And don't worry about the lady. We try and scare each other regularly." He quickly ducked his partner's flight of finches, then put up his own shield, slightly chagrined.

"And who's your lady friend?" he asked, a mischeivous twinkle in his eye.

"Amy See. I'll introduce you two later. It looks like you've got your hands full with one girl already. Don't think you could handle two." Jake replied with a chuckle.
He saw a finch dive bomb Jonas. Another decided to go for him. Jake quickly dove. He nearly puked with the squish that followed.

Amy, who had moved off to the side when they were interrupted, began to introduce herself when the boy asked about her, but Jake did first. She rolled her eyes playfully at Jake's remark, but decided not to say anything.

She waited until she thought he was distracted, and then sent her small birds towards Jake. She didnt know if he had his shield up still or not, so she was prepared to stop them if the need be.

Jake landed on his back and saw a flutter of feathers. He immediately panicked.
"Aeris!" he shouted.
The whirlwind picked up again and caught the birds, sending them in different corners of the room. He didn't dare look at the walls, afraid of what color they might be.

Amy made a move to call her birds back to her when Jake summoned a whirlwind, but it all happened to fast. She closed her eyes and winced slightly as her birds were sent into the walls of the room. She whispered a spell, and their remains disappeared. She opened her eyes once they were gone. "Jeez Jake, didnt need to do all that." she said. She was only slightly angry though. After all, he was only protecting himself, and besides, she would of had to get rid of them eventually. Better he did it than her.

"Please tell me they're gone...please tell me they're gone." Jake mumbled to himself.
He slowly opened his eyes and sighed in relief at the lack of bird remains on the walls. He sat up and looked at Amy.
"Sorry about that...I kinda panicked..." he said.

Jonas winced at the impact of the birds, and nearly got hit by his partner's ferrets for his troubles. Paying attention was a key to success... if it only weren't so hard. Once the birds' grisly remains were gone, he turned to face Jake. "Creatures aren't as tough as they seem, eh?" he said quietly, guessing that Jake wasn't too pleased with what he had done.
